I work for myself, mostly fitting kitchens and bathrooms but turn my hand to most things when it comes to home improvements. Over a year ago I quoted a couple for a new family bathroom and en suite. They overspent on fancy items for the bathroom, blowing £1k on a swanky shower alone. This left them a bit short of ££ for the en suite so it got put on the back burner. At the turn of the year I heard from the lady, keen to press on with the en suite so after work on the 3rd I popped round to run over the details then pencil them in for Feb/March. Things had changed a bit for them in the interim and their budget was still a bit tight. We spoke about ways to trim the overall cost but the savings all came up a bit short.

Derek asks " can you do anything about the labour cost?"

There's a fair bit of work involved so it was a "no."

"Ok, let's go downstairs and look at other options," Derek responded.

We sat down and Beryl (Derek's partner) came in with a cuppa. "I'm not sure if you'd be up for this and I hope you won't be offended but would you take payment in kind?" Derek asked. I should explain Derek owns a little car repair business and I was a bit unclear whether he meant shafting beryl or getting an oil change so I asked him to spell out what he means.

"Well Beryl is keen on you so if it's mutual then how about having her on tap with your tea."

I looked at beryl and asked her what she thought. "How about I give you a taster now?" I looked at Derek who nodded and asked me to drop my overalls. Slight update today as Derek messaged this morning asking if I'd be up for giving Beryls sister a "special discount" for decorating their hallway!
