Ban the Whisper - Yay or Nay

I think a blanket ban on whispers would be unacceptable. I have many private conversations both with friends and with strangers that would be inappropriate and unwise to share with a full room. I wouldn't mind seeing whispers turn to friends-only though.
I totally agree that there should be a notification to people trying to whisper a user that has whispers turned off, or that has blocked them. It doesn't make any sense otherwise.

That one is on our list, as it makes good sense to do it that way.
I think whispers is a useful function, and often exchange messages, via whispers, with friends, and friends who aren't on my friends list. I'm quite happy to ignore them if they're just daft or otherwise best ignored.
It would be unfair to those who do not abuse the whisper system. I find the best convos I've had in chat have evolved just from a whisper. Yes the room does go inactive when there's a lot of whispers but is there a reason we need to make the main room very busy with everyone trying to talk over everyone else if they just want to chat up one person?
I enjoy using the whispers.......some people feel a bit intimidated by some of the room banter and prefer to just chat in a whisper.
Its all about personal preference. If someone whispers me I do reply, whether its a yes, no or not even in your wildest dreams sunshine lol
My vote is...........leave things as they are
dee xx
We have no major problems with the whisper system really and there's the option to block anyone who's rude, abusive or annoying. There are people we'd happily whisper with but whom we wouldn't necessarily want on our friends list first so we'd be happier with the current system. If it isn't broken and all that...
If we didnt have whispers i'd be fooked - most of my broken appliances get fixed in whispers, as do my questions on car maintenance, how to get the best shine on my windows when cleaning them and recipes :rascal:

Kat,
can you whisper Dee some recipes ?
(start simple, e.g. toast, then move to buttering it, etc.)
lol
bolt
On the subject in hand, if enhancement in pipeline to notify when whispers on or off, be interesting to understand how Ste3e and the team will integrate with the 'allow', 'deny' or 'block' function we already have.

lmao @ recipes.......i do actually get some
what about having none whispering rooms ?
if its ok to have non directing (btw noone asked if that was ok or not?)
then surely having rooms where whispers are turned off is an ok request.
that way it keeps everyone happy.
personally for us we dont come on here much these days as chat seemes to have died on its arse, due in part to too many whispers, people getting snotty as soon as sex is mentioned and of course the dreaded cliques.
but we pay our money so entitled to our opinion.

its always been the case jools but getting worse due to the falling numbers.
it wasn't long ago we was all in the couples room with probably less than 10 of us talking which was frustrating, those of us that did talk suddenly became a clique.
we came on-line last night and opened a room which got no interest at all but then at 9 pm there was only 400 members in chat, 300 of those in the pool or the hubby watches room,
another site we are members of had 1500 members in chat last night but do have more dedicated rooms dunno
we leaving soon anyway, site owners dont seem to take any notice of what people ask for and have not seen a single improvement since we have been on here.
whispers and other factors have all but killed chat.
meets from this site seem impossible.
been nice chatting to everyone. shame coz it could be so much better.
it seems the whole site is being taken over by bi guys looking for other bi guys.
when in chat people rarely chat ! its like hi, hi, hi, bye , bye , bye.
unless your parts of the pool " clique" then forget it.
then if you do start talking sex and sexy stuff some members get the hump ???
bye all.

Only my opinion but I think the Whisper Facility in the chatroom should be withdrawn.
Removing the whisper would give more control to the chatroom user and certainly make the chatroom(s) a little more active (hopefully) By control I mean they can be contacted via the profile method and either respond/ignore or block but at least the person doing the contacting will know, either by seeing their email has been read or because they can no longer email the person because they're blocked or best case they get a positive response back and move on from there.
Of course you can turn your whispers off but as there is currently no way of the person whispering you knowing you've got your whispers switched off they will either A/ Keep trying or B/ Think you're ignorant or C ( insert your own answer )
As an example, today in chat and over the course of approx 15 mins there were maybe ten members whispering me. On each occasion I suggested that they simply chat in the room and out of those 10, just 1 moved into the chatroom. I suspect this is a recurring theme.
This is an opinion only.

I think Andy_Jules' raises some good points to be fair. Pebbles too, with the 'friends only' suggestion. Trouble is, you can some times get talking to some decent folk by way of a whisper. That said, there is a distinct lack of participation in room discussion at times and admittedly this can be for all manner of reasons.
I do think that the constant whispering despite the whisper not being welcome, is an issue. Not so much harassing as it is just bloody annoying. Or more over, it's the quality of the whisper. "Erm hello?!" When you've not responded to the first 4 whispers - Annoying. I think a few people just need to wisen up a little and strap on their conversation game.
Checkidy check check yo self, before you rickidy wreck yo self ..... And all that malarkey.

To ban whispers would surely be a step backwards for this site.
Having the ability to 'whisper' someone is an excellent (and much quicker) alternative to having to 'mailbox' someone when you want a PVT conversation and are already in a chat room.
Yeah, sometimes unwanted whispers can be a pain but I reckon an outright ban would be a bad move.
I don't believe that just allowing whispers from 'friends only' is a good idea either.
Quite a few of my existing close friends on this site only became my friends after (politely) whispering me in chatrooms.
I'd prefer to keep them as they are. I can cope with a few unwanted ones from time to time.
The pros FAR outweigh the cons (imo).
