There's been a few members having issues with the chatroom and the common factor was that all of them have Virgin as their ISP, having said that this doesn't effect everyone using Virgin, symptoms;
the room seems to freeze then it greys out;
all chatters names go a dull colour;
can't see cams;
very slow log in to the chatrooms;
and this only happens during peak hours ie; evenings in the week and weekends.
From our experience most of these issues are usually client side on peoples machines, however sometimes it is the ISP, this is one issue that is outside of our control, pretty much like Tiscali a while back.
Virgin have been capping bandwidth during peak hours and we happen to know that they are having issues with certain traffic being classed as peer to peer software when its not and thus capped. Last we heard they were hoping to sort this out within 2 weeks, the more people that complain, the quicker they should sort it out, as it is being over restrictive on the service that you pay for.
If you are having the above issue with chat and are using Virgin, would you ask Virgin the following question and let us know how they reply as it could help us to resolve the issue;
I am having issues using a video chatroom running on Macromedia Flash Communication Server, after speaking to the site owners they believe that Virgin may be blocking / limiting the ports as the chat needs RTMP protocol on port 1935 to function properly, or having issues with certain traffic being classed as peer to peer software when it quite clearly isn't, is virgin doing anything at peak time to limit/filter this traffic or having problems identifying legitimate use from peer to peer as the only reports that have been received by them have come from people using Virgin.
off topic...
Perhaps Virgin will also cap peoples access to their money when they buy NR
:shock: :shock: :shock:
we been having problems have emailed then and just waiting for them to get back to us
never ending problems with virgin in other areas as well tbh but bt is so bloody expensive
Also having major problems with Virgin, and not only in the chat room. I am also having problems with general browsing on the site.
E-mail sent and will await their reply.
I have loads of problems with it...
just put it down to the server issues and used it as a way of spending less time in chat.
I shall contact virgin and see what they say.
thanks
Also started having awful problems with virgin.
Paying for an 8mb line - only time it ever gets close to this is before midday monday to friday, anytime after about 4pm weekdays and allday weekends it barely exceeds dial up speeds.
Of course this nowadays makes all the internet pretty unusable - not just this site.
Have asked for mac code so we can change but who too, any recommendations?
Check your speed here you might be surprised.
Lucky you! maybe easynet is the way to go, lol
Incidently for anyone else with virgin just google - "traffic shaping" virgin - and see the horror stories.
Shame really been with them 2 years and been pretty good til this week.
I use be* ( ) its up to 24meg over BT landline.
From what I can see it connects at about 2-3 times standard adsl, so if your adsl can connect on a 8max at about 4megs then you'll get a connection of about 12 meg.
At the moment their contention is very good, but i'm guessing as more people sign up then it will slow down at peak times.
While it does have a FUP so far no one has caused it to be invoked and my router rarely shows less than multi gigabytes of trafic a day due to running my website on the back of it and downloading huge amounts of porn, lol.
They reciently droped the prices of their packages, so I can see the service slowing down soon.
The problem with vergin "off net" (over bt, not cable), I invoked the get out clause when they introduced the new fup some months back, is that its hugely inder funded and the adverts are pulling so many new people to the service that they just cant cope... there is already talk of selling off the "off net" portion as it was only aquired so that NTL could use the virgin name... "Virgin" is still NTL under a different brand... before they did the reverse sellout I had no problems with NTL over cable before I moved, which was why I went virgin off net for 2 months before bailing.
Jon Xx
thats on 2 meg from virgin at 10 50 am not sure if its good or not im useless with numbers
Don't know what it means either - I'm with BT.
Thanks for that Jon... looked at be, unfortunately can't get it down here yet....
Fanny, I think but am not 100% sure that your figure means you are getting close to what you pay for -1977kb/s = and Jags nearly (download)
Presuming you tested at around the time of your forum posts, these seem now to be considered off peak internet usage, at least by virgin.
It would be good if you checked again after 4pm and before midnight supposedly the peak hours, to see how you might slow down, if at all.
A friend passed on this site, a bit techy for me dunno who is behind it, but it shows the probs with virgin, and compares other isps.
Still can't make up my mind who to change to, sky do look good - but not really a big fan of theirs, have the mac code from virgin so got 30 days......
Wow that site is incredibly handy :thumbup:
Here are our results this morning at am. (bearing in mind paying for an 8mb line) not too bad...
and there we were thinking that the days of the World Wide Wait were long gone.
Just done mine again and its better than last time..
10 50 am
am supposed to be on 2 meg so not to bad
they still similar to 11 am this morning will try again later
And heres me thinking it must have been a fluke! FFS!
Will be having words with Tiscali after xmas, if anyones done anything which has resulted in an improvement, please let me know :thumbup:
