Hi there,
I've been in the general chatroom a couple of times now & have found that I've been inundated with whispers i.e. private messages. I've tried to say that I'd like to stick w/ the main group in a nice way, but some people have gotten ticked off about it. What's the correct etiquette?

I;m not sure what the 'correct etiquette' it because people deal with it different ways. People aren't supposed to whisper you unless they seek persmission first and you say it's ok.
Depending on my mood I either just type "No whispers please" in the room or I have been known to copy and paste their whisper into the room and ask why they are whispering me - but only if they are persistent. Also not everyone reads the rules before entering chat so maybe telling them it's against the AUP might help?
If anyone is abusive to you either talk to a chat Op or make a note of the room, server and the time and raise a support ticket with Admin as they can check the chat logs.
Hi Kissy,
Thanks for the advice. You have a great profile, btw! biggrin

You are weslome and thanks for the compliment. redface :D
Uninvited whispers are an abuse of the system; simple. Sometimes they are accidental and the abuser apologises but some persistent offenders need a short sharp shock to correct their behaiviour. You should report any abuse to the Ops or Admin and they will deal with it. SH has a policy of not naming and shaming so copying and pasting text could make you almost as bad as them!
Come the new chatroom, I think there is an ability built in to ignore whispers from specified members during a chatroom session.

I assume thats what you meant.
The whisperer is the abuser, so the original statement seems correct

if its accidental, then yes Steve, you are quite right.... I was being a bit harsh
Hiya,
Sorry I haven't been around the past few days. Thanks to everyone for their advice. I'll be putting it into practice. biggrin

Really? Can a mod comment on this because in the absence of an op at the time, this is what I do for persistent offenders - or if people are just completely ignoring my repeated requests for 'no uninvited whispers' . And my profile makes my position on uninvited whispers pretty clear so I am being VERY clear.
Seriously, uninvited whispers are a big problem. Am I being too kind to think people do not know the rules? And even if I did report the persistent offenders, there are so many that I would spend most nights submitting support tickets.
On the 'ignore' option, actually that doesn't work for many....they become persistent offenders because they don't hear anythign back...and keep whispering...and whispering.... Last night for instance I got 6 whispers from someone I didn't know and I'm sure this is because I took the 'ignore' option. No wonder I choose to name and shame rolleyes
Personally I have no problem with chatters pasting un-invited whispers into the main room.

You can't name and shame in the forum - but if you are getting abused in any form then either PM a MOD (for forum stuff) or an OP (for chatroom stuff) and tell him/her who it is that way - it's the public naming and shaming which is not allowed. As a non-chatroom user I don't know the correct procedure for dealing with it in the room so an Op is your best bet there.

Nor me
Hornyinslough, if the room host is hosting the room properly they will see the whispers you paste in the main chat and they should take action, by warning the offender then booting them if they persist.
Otherwise as Jags has mentioned pm one of us Ops (names in purple on the forum) with the user name, chat server and chatroom name and we will look into it smile

When I was an Op this used to help me do my job of warning people as it can be difficult to pick out things like that as most chat room users know (it didn't help that my connection was slow as hell either....lol )
Best thing to do is to say that you aren't interested. If they persist tell an op or the owner of the room.
Out of curiousity is copying and pasting the whisper to the whole room not naming and shaming? or thats what i'd describe at as, would like the ops opinions on this.

THanks steve, minx and jags. So from what I understand, ops can only effectively mod the forum *there and then* if someone re-posts the uninvited whisper or make some public comment .
OK, thanks, very helpful biggrin Glad to know I'm not breaking any rules wink
Is there any chance of having more ops available at any one time?

I do and your hard work is appreciated cool
So Steve, the stats are as follows, after 10 minutes in chat 4 people whispered uninvited, half of them more than once. I'm glad u and Shireen were in the room to see it for yourselves. Please, please more ops. Or at least please give me my own personal op bodyguard!
Always here to help hun kiss

Yes it really spoils it doesn't it? And then to be told to watch my language in my FIFTH message about no uninvited whispers in one room over a 10 minute period was a tad ironic seeing as though the room host didn't warn the whisperers/abusers* at any point. No wonder I get pissed off and swear to get the message across - not that it did rolleyes
As for those who think I've got 'issues', damn right. You try being bombarded EVERY night. Most men say they'd love it but give it a week and you'd be thinking it's not fun and start getting a tad short with people. So in case I haven't been clear enough, if you see me in the chatroom, NO UNINVITED WHISPERS.
Let's get our own room juniper and we'll have a big boot to do with what we like!
*Delete for your choice of word
Come on guys, there's no ops or mods on now and I want to report abuse. I got abuse last night and a third party is reporting it on my behlaf. MORE ops online please.

I appreciate the problem hun but you have to remember that we all have lives away from SH... I have been at work all day, picked the kids up from school, cooked their tea, cleaned up and am now just logging on for a few minutes before putting the kids in the shower and getting them ready for bed. Then I have to make their lunches for tomorrow, put the washing machine on, get the clothes out of the tumble dryer, quickly iron some clothes, put clean clothes away before I even think about settling down and going in the chatroom....
We all do as much as we can but we cant be here 24/7 as our lives just dont allow it smile
It's not personal to any one op or mod Shireen and I appreciate everyone has private lives. I admin a large board myself so do understand. This is a practical issue because of the high levels of uninvited whispers and repeated abuse and it seems there isn't enough ops online to deal with it . Apart from 'report the abuse and we'll look into it', are there any plans on how SH are working on how to deal with this issue at the time i.e. recruit more ops or other options?
TY kiss
Any chance of more chat regulars becoming ops? And if you make them female then you solve two problems in one...

Horny, if there's not enough mods to protect you ladies 24/7 in the chat rooms then I would willingly sacrifice myself in the cause of your safety.
I'll fend off any unwanted whisperers as best I could but if the onslaught is just too great I may have to resort to throwing my body ontop of you to protect you. lol
It's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it!!!
littlemee my hero

You're safe(ish) with me horny.
