Sometime ago Sgt Bilko opened chat rooms designed for newbies to have a learning experience.
Are these still running on any regular timetable basis? If not, is there any chance of some trustworthy and sane member resurrecting them?
(OK--I know that sane is asking a bit much)

That actually seems like a sound idea. Many newbies (us included) are still fairly shy about opening up, and not sure of the do's and don't that everyone else just seems to know.... rolleyes

I also used to like these rooms and always felt safe to ask the silly, daft questions. The ones that everyone else apart from me, seems to know the answer to.
I know Bilko is off line at the moment, so he wont be doing any for a while but hopefully after seeing this post, another 'experienced' chat room user just might decide to do something.

I can also see a problem with this. The member part is the easy bit, trustworthy is also manageable, but I have to agree that the sane bit is probably nigh on impossible lol

I suggested this some time ago and was advised that only ChatOps could host rooms like this.
I'm sure plenty of more experienced members would be willing to help (I co-hosted a few with Bilko's permission) but there is a risk that if a non-Op runs a room newbies might assume that standard members are acting in some official capacity.
Anyone at all can host a chatroom as long as the chatroom rules are followed and the site AUP is upheld.
Forum chat is fairly regularly opened by peeps who want to chat and would be happy to help anyone who is nervous or has questions. When it's on it's usually advertised in here. Watch out for the forum thread.

Checked with another Op on this and newbie rooms can only be hosted by Ops at the mo.

Perhaps it ought to be written into the rules then dunno
Was never a problem when I was an Op confused

I agree on your first point - I've also suggested previously that a permanent room is setup (like the Pool etc) for this purpose.
Dunno how long it's been since you were an Op but this originally surfaced just after the take-over.
McrM4M-pvtOK we are discussing opening these rooms again but we won't be forced into making a decision on them without considering all options.
What we don't want to happen is members giving out the wrong advice to newbies. So we are at the stage where some of the OPs would be happy to co-host as Sarge has done in the past.
However, none of us have yet decided when it would be possible.
Please don't feel like we are ignoring your comments but try and give us time to make arragements so that one OP can spend most of an evening in one room and there being other OPs to help on the rest of the servers

Hi Dawnie - sorry if my posts haven't come across as intended. I'm in favour of them, happy to help out, and understand that they have to be thought through carefully so they work well. Some forum users won't have been around when this was originally running and wouldn't be aware of previous requirements for an Op to be present.
Put me down if you're creating a list and want some volunteers to help out. More than happy to help if I can. wink
