Police target doggers
Aug 4 2006
By Rebecca Taylor, Chester Chronicle
THRILL-SEEKERS looking for sex at a rural picnic ground are being targeted in a police operation.
Undercover and uniformed officers patrolled Broxton picnic area each evening this week to ensure nobody was having sex in the public toilet or openly outraging public decency.
Police have posted warning messages on 'dogger' and 'cottager' websites to increase awareness of the law and help people protect themselves from homophobic attack.
Letters are being sent to registered owners of cars frequently in the area at peak times, reminding them of the law.
The operation is in response to complaints from residents and businesses about cottaging - gay men having sex in toilets - and dogging -people watching mixed couples having sex in public.
The site, home to the activity for at least 15 years, is close to a school bus stop and is used during the day by families and coach parties.
Earlier this year a man was attacked at the site by three men wielding a metal bar, prompting fears the night-time visitors could be putting themselves at risk of robbery or violence.
Trish Roberts, licensee of neighbouring hotel The Egerton Arms, said guests comment on noise from the car park at night.
She said: 'We have had people having sex on our fence, we had to chase some other people out of our garden. If they did these things where we couldn't see them it would be fine but I don't want my nine-year-old to see this out of the window.
'I think the best thing would be for them to lock the car park at night.'
Picnic site owner Tommy Lloyd, who runs a snack bar, is considering selling the land.
He said:'We pick up a big bag of rubbish every night and the kerbs and pavements get damaged by people parking all over them. It needs a lot of money to improve things.'
Thanks Warthog,
