Bring back the likes of Kentswinger777 plus those who we lost around a similar time and put back the CA and things may get back on track wink

Why would these members come back bluefish? More to the point why did these so called great members leave in the first place if the forum was better with them?
The leaving wasn't by choice!
From memory, Kent was pretty one dimensional wasn't he? Whatever Jon Gaunt said was gospel and we got Mr Gaunts daily Talk Sport tirades on here via Kents. I always thought Kents decline was aligned to Gaunts sacking from Talk Sport?

I have delved back into past threads for some of these members no longer here, and Kents posts seemed on many occasions the only ones worth posting on. Hard hitting subjects too from what I can gather. Ruffled many a feather as well it seems and seems the site forum has not been the same since. Is that a good or a bad thing I do not know, but the forum certainly is nowhere near as busy since his demise on here.
I think you will find from Google TooHot that the two dates have no bearing on each other at all it would seem. Did he ruffle your feathers then TH?
As an edit on here to show TH that you are wrong, Kents last post on here was the 27 October 2010, and the sacking of Jon Gaunt was on the 18 November 2008.So Kents last two years of postings were after Gaunts sacking. Thought I would clear that up as hate to see information incorrectly used. lol

Hmmmmmmm. On balance Sarge I'd say it was one of the few things that's happened on here in years gone by that's actually improved things. Security round the GFZ is much better than it was when you was in charge, we've got half a dozen minimum wage uniformed dudes on split shifts these days for what you got paid for an eight hour stint all on yer tod. Gotta economise in these financially straightened times we live in mate yer see, you were just too expensive. These guys don't insist on armoured vehicles and stuff they can rally round the car park in convoy for one, job lot of company cars from Skoda, they're happy as pigs in shit. Downside is I've not managed to break in for a cheeky jacuzzi without having to wipe down the tide mark and other sundry stains I don't care to investigate too much in years, but hey ho.
damn i just wrote a massive reply and pressed the wrong button and lost it all!!!
I havent posted in here for a while, despite once being a fairly prolific poster at one point (in in my second incarnation now), and when i logged on this was the first one that caught my eye.
I to remember when the chat forum was a hive of activity, and there was many a night i sat and yakked with the 'forummassive' into the wee small hours and laughed till my ribs ached at some of the stuff that was posted. People like Losty, resonance, winchwench, cherrytree, jaymar and NWC to name but few.
I know that there were more people who used the Cafe (as it is now), and possibly its because back then swinging was in its hey day and more people were joining/willing to have a dabble in a lifestyle they thought they would like to experience. I dont like to use the word/fad or fashion, as i think it does a great disservice to the people who embrace the swinging lifestyle, but I think around that time, there were certainly more people joining the sute and either stumbling/being pushed/yanked/cajoled into posting in the chat forum, and enjoying it so much they stayed.
For many I think, i think real life just got in the way. I know quite a lot who left due to careers, new relationships, kids etc and moved on from the swinging scene). I made a lot of virtual friends in this very forum (albeit a different incarnation of it), and some of them I am still good friends with on facebook, despite never having met them, and I really enjoy keeping in touch with them......and some of them I did meet (in a non swinging way) and they turned into very close personal friends
Im glad someone mentioned the name Kentswingers, as it was him that popped into my head when i first opened this thread, and i couldnt for the life of me remember his user name, and Im sorry to say that at first I thought it was flower (so many apologies for that one Flower!!) and i remember that when current affais was mixed in with the rest of the forum that there were many interesting/heated/lively debates with him as the instigator or catalyst in loads of them......some were very entertaining and some were like car crashes, in that you know you shouldnt look, but you just couldnt help yourself!
A lot of people 'tuned in' for the next episode and visited the forums just for nights like those.
I think it was Anais (another name i remember with fondness from my time as a forum groupie) who posted the link to the 'Wayback Machine', so i decided to have a nose and picked a random date around the time i was posting, and it gave me a massive grin, not only because of the amount of threads i started, but also at some of the names on there!

so thanks for that!!
For me, i stopped posting for numerous reasons
a) i decided to take time out to have my 5th child, and then kind of lost my mojo/confidence in swinging, and the longer i was out of it, the harder it was to come back and post in a forum that was also moving on and evolving. I never went back to full swinging, prefering to stick with one f/b, although hubby still dabbles occasionally.
b) I dont do change very well, and while i was away, the forum changed from the layout you saw in the link above through various other guises to what it is today, and (for me) it lost the sense of 'togetherness' in that everyone was all in once place so more liable to jump in and post on a thread that took their fancy, and you got a lot of banter, and people kind of 'bounced off' each other which fed the threads, or inspired lots of new ones.
Splitting it into separate entities, i feel, just splintered the 'forumites' even further, diluting what was already there, as many stuck to one section and rarely ventured into 'other bits' Its a bit like people being in separate rooms in a community centre, and not venturing into other rooms to see whats/whos going on in there, rather than all being together in one big room and all chatting/laughing/bickering/joking together.
c) some people were very clever at being nasty in a covert and subtle way, rather than the all out in your face nastiness, which sometimes can be more off putting than overt hostility/horribleness. Little needles about grammar, posting style, choice of subject matter or personal opinions, meant to belittle and make people feel uncomfortable or stupid....but that said, you get that on every forum on the net, S/H is nothing special in that regard.
anyways, in essence....real life spoiled the forum whip

It is rather funny looking back at the old threads with kents in mind, as it seems he certainly had the measure of your good self on many an occasion. rotflmao:rotflmao:
Maybe that is why people stopped as it was what people looked for on many a boring evening. Still maybe with a petition we could all ask for kents to be allowed back. At least it would brighten this place up a bit eh?
All those in favour. :taz:
Oddly, as I remember it far from stirring the forums up in a positive way Kent contributed greatly to a somewhat poisonous atmosphere. Lots found him offensive, plain and simple as far as I could see from the conversations that took place in PM and elsewhere, were a little pissed off he'd not been banned sooner. Trouble was he couldn't take criticism, resorting to personal abuse all too often when he'd run out of actual argument, such as those arguments were to begin with. Often that would spill over into other threads to the point the whole forum was infected by it and other regs just stopped posting cos they were sick of bloody seeing it.
It's my feeling the CA forum was hived off from the Cafe in the first place to try and contain that kinda thing a little more, parking the kind of controversial threads he delighted in starting, sometimes by way of simple trolling for a reaction in my view off somewhere by themselves. I highly doubt a mod here would ever confirm that, if true, but that's my take it on it anyways, so no, no amnesty for Mr Kent thanks. Ta.

Of course I have to take others views on board when talking about a member that was here, and then banned long before I came on here. But the fact remains that times then were so much more active than they are at present. Of course if there are still members here that did not get on with the likes of kent then of course those people would not want him or any other member like him back on here.
But the forums are dead Neil as you only have to look back over the last 6 months to know that. Very very few new threads started, and the forums in general are not even worth bothering with from what they were a few years ago. Of course Neil you are more than entitled to say the things you have above, but without any evidence it remains just an opinion. wink
He obviously left a mark be it good or bad for a past contributor in Thebonediggers, instantly thought of kent when viewing this thread. So he certainly left his mark on here and I think I would have enjoyed having debates with him for sure. It now seems Neil that where there are very few posters with real passion on here now, and I think that is part of the problem.

That is definately what caused all the problems on here, it is the reason for the snow we are having at the moment, and the reason why I broke a nail at work today (well, not really, but do miss your madness) lol
I also think that another reason is that Mrs Bonedigger not posting as often and keeping us all entertained with her antics.
Back to topic, yes the forum is quiet, and I for one do not post as often as I used to. Mainly because very busy with real life stuff and when I do log on, by the time I have done any 'mod' stuff, Im usually ready for bed
The pleasure that some people seem to get with constant Site, Admin and Mod bashing also puts me off posting, a bit of a case of cant do right for doing wrong confused

As it happens I broadly agreed with Kents on almost everything other than his tirades were simply a regurgitation of Jon Gaunts rants. That became tiresome when there was a lack of original content.
As was stated by someone else, because the postings lacked original thought the arguments when challenged were weak and retorts became nasty instead of reasoned.
I do now remember that he continued after his departure from Talk Sport.
I think all the reasons posted in this thread add to the demise of interest in the forums and no single factor can be wholly attributed to it,
One other thing that I think never helped was the regurgitating rather than reinventing of old topics. You know the sort of thing. When a subject was posted up, by a newbie to the forums, that had been, or something very similar had been, posted on before. A link to that topic would be thrown up by a long standing member to a time long past where something similar had been discussed along with saying "This topic has been done before ad nauseum" People putting these topics want them to be discussed in the here and now by the people in the here and now. Not by the heroes of swing from the ages of swinging magnificence a long time gone.

Spot on!
You're dead right Losty. The endless refrain of 'the search button is your friend' wore pretty fucking thin, always from the same people, always directed at n00bs wanting to engage with us and finding their attempt at conversation ( which is what the forum is here for FFS! ) thrown right back in their face. Used to piss me right off, could be nothing but off-putting. The search button may have been their friend, but carry on like that Mr ( or Mrs ) it's gonna be the only friend you have on 'ere to talk to before long, and now look. rolleyes
Edit: I just went off to check that I'd never used the above phrase before anyone else did and pulled me right up on it. Seems I did, but only ever ironically, luckily. Phew! Nice bit of Googling through old threads, I just made me laugh so well though with this blast from the past on this very subject. lol I wouldn't know where to start doing that anymore, one in a series of long and arduous scientific investigations I once conducted on 'ere. I wish I knew how to get back to it. sad

wave Hello Losty x
You raised a very valued point.
People in general look back and say the past was better in many areas of life.
The here and now should be just as important and how we go forward is the thing to look forward to.
Hopefully more new people will start to make posts and threads we should be here to encourage and support them.
Like Neil I find it so hard to post at length in forum and I wonder why? Surely practice should make perfect but in the case of forum It seems the reverse is true.

For me I stopped posting because I looked through the posts and it was either a topic which had been discussed numerous times before and wasn't heading anywhere different at the time I looked, or it was descending into mod-bating/a full blown cyber fist-fight.
I guess familiarity's bred boredom as well as contempt.
Very simple answer for me is that if people are flirting, having a genuine giggle, or just plain enjoying themselves I'll jump in with both feet. If they're having a pop at anyone I'll switch off and go make a brew and I suspect it's the same for a lot of others.
But hey, I've posted on this, so maybe there's hope for me yet. :-D

mod-basting

If ya don`t baste em they get all dry !
For an 8-10 lb (3.5-4.5 kg) mod joint:
Cook for 30 minutes then reduce the temperature to gas mark 3, 325°F (170°C) and cook for a further 2½-3 hours. Then give it a final 30 minutes (uncovered) at gas mark 6, 400°F (200°C).
