I read that whole story and was bewildered with the emotional words within it. It doesn't just take a sweep at one set of the population but the whole spectrum as far as I can see.
Who does it claim to represent? The left or right? To me it seems to be the group known as "Throw the grenade into the middle of the room and run like hell"

He said that both legal tax avoidance and illegal tax evasion were unacceptable and 'morally indefensible'. Matt Sinclair of the TaxPayers' Alliance said Mr Clegg was 'barking up the wrong tree by targeting legitimate tax planning'.
If he does not like legal tax avoidance, change the law, he is after all in the right place to do so.
I use an accountant, don't think I could find my way around the tax system without their help dunno

So does this mean that I can quote Clegg and have "morally indefensible" in my signature?

How do you feel that Cam/Clegg have decided you and all small businesses are the same as a benefit cheat?

Blue, if your accountant has a spare few hours, does he fancy a role with HMRC, seems they don't understand the tax system by all accounts lol
All,
Wonders if the Daily Mail stance has anything to do with a certain senior person at the top of that Paper claiming to have been a non-Dom for UK tax for several years, apparently 'lives' in France.
However as there has been some exposure and questions on their qualification to continue to be in such a position, a full HMRC Tax investigation is being threatened/called for.
If this occurs and finds he has broken the rules, then it's understood that their UK tax liability could go back several years, not likely to be cheap.
So perhaps this article is part of his 'defence' by going on the 'offence', hoping that the resulting smoke screen will hide their own position ?

Don't forget that even HMRC can't find their way round the easiest parts of their own tax system... witness the PAYE debacle in recent weeks!!
seems like a good opportunity to cut out the complexities of taxations, install a more manageable system. rather than spend what will be millions chasing after people who won't be able to pay.

Bring back this character perhaps....

He has the same values as most governments do in wealth distribution but does it much more effectively. No need for accountants either

must be his granny's...
The issue is to stop cheats, and I'm sure we are all for that. I'm damn sure that if I am paying my taxes and declaring my income truthfully, then I want everyone else to do the same, whether in regard to the benefits system or the tax system.
However if we have a crappy tax system that is shot full of holes and inconsistencies so that tax can be avoided / evaded if you have enough money to throw at your acountant, and a benefits system that enables scroungers to get lots of my money without working, then I want the systmes changed. But adding even more people into the staffing mix is not the right way to do it. We need complete reform of both systems. Which certainly does not mean giving massive IT or consultancy contracts to the "usual suspects" who were resonsible for the f***ed up and overpriced systems we've got at the moment
As far as using "lie detectors", (phone stress analysis) it is only what is being used by many corporations & departments at the moment.

I have thought long and hard Dave and come the the conclusion, I don't seam to care :dunno:
I suppose if one wished to Analise it, you could say its a very sweeping comment. Would he rather have people paying in or just taking it out?
But all in all, it does not anger or rub me up the wrong way.
And Dave, I have to say, not the most reliable source :giggle:

I know some one who has a salary in excess of 100k a year yet his annual tax bill in total is less than that of someone earning 20k a year. All proper and legal.

You don't know the name of his accountant do you? wink

His lawyer is probably Miriam Clegg or Cherie Blair.
