I have always wondered how the disciples got thier names,
James
John
Andrew
Philip Nathanael
Thomas Didymous
Matthew Levi
James
Jude Thaddeus
Simon The Zealot
Judas Iscariot
Mathias
Bartholamew
I mean they are'nt exactly synonymous with the names of the middle east region are they ?
and who was the thirteenth disciple/appostle ? Mathias having been chosen by the other 11 after the demise of Judas Iscariot.
Hmmmm an interesting question....bit beyond me but Dan Brown might have an answer!!!!

I imagine, like lots of names and words over the centuries, they have been adapted. If we are to assume that Jesus et al actually existed, then perhaps the disciples' names are versions of the originals that were more appealing to the book's target audience?
Naturally, for those that believe the book to be a work of fiction, then the characters' names are not much different to any other .... didn't Shakespeare make up loads of words that probably meant nowt at the time?
most of them are listed under jewish names. So are likely to have been around since the dawn of civilisation.
In English we've always tended to translate the names of foreign historical figures into English, and most other languages do the same. For example we learn in history about Joan of Arc, and Christopher Columbus, not Jeanne d'Arc or Christoforo Colombo. In the same way the disciples in the New Testament all had names in Hebrew, and/or in some cases Greek and Aramaic, but we know them best by their names translated into English.
well...i have it on good authority, that actually Matthews mom wanted to called him
poppy babycakes buttercup !!! but his dad was haveing none of it...and quickly baptised him matty before his Mom had a chance !!!
Dean,
as his mom was often wont to say, he's no messiah, he's a very naughty boy
there is a theory about the 13th disciple
it is said by some that the 13th was mary magdelene - and that the catholic church for reasons of their own wrote her out of this role during bible translation over a number of years.
there are supposedly old papyrus scripts in existance which postulate this theory but they are subject to so much interpretation and ambiguous translation that it is unclear wether or not they are accurate
in the end history is written by the winners and so it would seem are legends/fables and other stories loosely based on some truth and/or lies
that's a bit harsh. true,but harsh lol
