Christianity oppression or is it wrong for this to be forced on non Christians?
Surely Blue the Human Rights act was never meant to be like this.....was it?
When I go anywhere were prayers are said, regardless of which relidgion it is, I simple keep quiet and wait for them to finish.
If religious practice was forced on me may be it would be an infringement of my rights, but it is just good manors to allow others the comfort of their beliefs.

if a councillor wanted to say prayers to the fairies at the bottom of his garden, should the others respct his beliefs and quietly let him get on with it ?
What about the human rights of Fairies then? :giggle:

A number of points:-
1) The article is not clear over the actual level of objection to the prayers.
2) Beachcrofts (the solicitors acting in bringing the action) are in my experience known to go for very extreme interpretation of wording of laws, so this is not good news for the Council's budget if they do decide to defend it.
3) having said all that, if I was an attendee, I would prefer that prayers (of any faith) were not said at the meetings.
Plim
Sooooooooo.
A tiny group of people with extreme beliefs are trying to use the law to change things.
Our beloved media decide we need to be outraged. Otherwise we wouldn't even know about it. Or care. Unless of course we live locally and its us what is having to pay the bills.
Those who wish can use it to reinforce their long held points of view.
I think it is right that the facility to challenge government practices exists. I think its important for even the most extreme nut job to have their day in court, its a good reason for having laws and helps avoid terrorism. I don't think the atheists will win this one for the common sense reasons pointed out. If they do then perhaps we need to reconsider whether or not we intend to remain a "christian" country.
Personally, I think all religions are hokum and have no place in matters of state.
Whilst it doesn't offend me particularly, I find it astonishing in this day and age, that local and central government meetings are prefaced with inane ramblings about some fairy tale nonsense, originally devised to control and subjugate populations.

Some might say that taxes and house ownership were devised to do the same thing. dunno
Some one said to me the other day "Is there a big step between protection money and taxes"?
Other peoples prayers do not bother me, if I was in their place, I would just sit quite while they preyed. Equally I am not bothered too much by this action being taken either.
All though I am not religious, I do like religion, as I like the religious values. Most of the storeys in the Christian Bible have a moral which is to be admired, not all are appropriate in this day and age, as some things have moved on. But we can cherry pick the appropriate ones.

simply that after some of the things that local councils are capable of removing regards religion its rich that they should complain that someone would like to remove their rights regards religion thus pot kettle black
sorry but im not always in a position to make a lengthy comment due to the hours of work i keep

One fears the existence of inclement weather in a small crockery beverage container.
Bideford town council is a parish council - it barely exists except as a place for grumpy old men to go and whinge about litter. The greedy sods pay themselves £1000 a year for their hard work in running the allotments and the market and they're so incompetent they've managed to iritate the vilage atheist, who has complained about their prayers to the courts. Given that there's an evens chance that the village atheist didn't even have to fight an election to get on the council (half of all parish councillors are unelected) they should all have their heads soundly banged together.

If the council lost this, would that not set a president perhaps for bigger things?

Possibly, but it's such a foolish, wrong headed case for a member of the council to bring, I can barely bring myself to care about the larger principles.
If people want to believe in god I'm capable of disagrreing with them without need a lawyer to intervene and defend my sensibilities. No-one is forcing the objecting member of the council to pray - they're just saying they're going to do it before they have their meeting.
The NSS clearly think they're going to set a precedent, and are runnign a campaign to try and stop all councils from saying prayers in the main council chamber. It's rank stupidity from the NSS - I'd normally be on their side in any row, but this is just stupid point making of the worst kind on their
