We're off to see Al Murray this week. Have sat in front of the TV watching supposed comedians without even raising a smile, which comedians actually make you laugh.
Not with is now but my vote will always go for Bill Hicks, American comedian with a very dark view on American society.

I was reading up on Bill Hicks this morning as its been years since I looked at some of his material. He had an entire appearance on the letterman show axed because they reckon over one line that the producers found "offensive", a line having a minor knock at Christian religion (would post it as I think its funny and a little thought provoking but haven't checked the posting rules yet and wouldn't want to get black balled just yet).
One persons offensive is anothers comedy, think the problem with society is that most peoples skins are too thin and they can't see a joke for what it is.

That is the point I was making Gerty. People's skins are way too thin nowadays as taking the piss out of a car tyre will have some screaming lefty crying it is offensive. Teflon coated this end (but perhaps the coating may wear off eventually), life's too short to take offense. Often days when MrsG is sitting there giggling away with me going off to make some tea and vice versa (aren't we a nice domesticated couple) but each to there own.
Peter Kay always me laugh, and enjoyed watching him on the TV last week. Jimmy Carr also but that's about as far as I will go and switch the TV off when I see that sweaty little thing running round the stage (lee someone) or that floppy haired Michael McIntyre :censored::censored:
We saw Jethro Many years ago and he was brilliant but the last DVD we watched of his we weren't impressed and it all seemed a bit repetitive.

Very few comedians make me laugh 
Most seem to think that having a pop at less fortunate members of society is 'funny' I've even seen members of an audience picked out by one or two of these so called funny men...
Sorry, I don't find their brand of humour entertaining.

There is nothing wrong with offending someone - spending one's life never being offended is not a human right. Granted there is a difference between funny-offensive and cruel-offensive and everyone's line between the two is in a slightly different place.
Not funny (IMO) : Al Murray, Jack Dee, Bernard Manning, Chubby something, any more like that, Michael Mackintire is ok in small doses.
Funny (IMO) : Reginald D Hunter, Lee Evans (although I get bored eventually)
Actually I find situations funny more than 'comedians' - I fell about laughing during both Calendar Girls "We'll be able to get that sofa in the leather then" and Kinky Boots "Sex isn't supposed to be comfy!!" - and filled up in both too. I enjoy a lot of British films for their comedic/pathos content.
The off the cuff interplay on programmes like QI and League of their Own can be hilarious, but impossible to recreate on the phone to Mum.

My comedy hates are mostly anything such as dick Emery, Benny Hill, and any of the Carry on film. I also never really got Monty python and found the young ones unbearable. Oh and as for Morecambe and Wise....yuck!
I quite liked some of the earlier observational stuff such as Carrot Connely Not the 0'clock news even a little French & Saunders Fry and Laurie. And a bit left field I also liked the American sitcoms Roseanne and home improvement. a few current worth whiles for me are Milton Jones & Chris Addison

Another vote for Bill Hicks. I got a cd-rom featuring everything he ever did, including the banned Letterman appearance that was mentioned before.
I'm also a big fan of Eddie Izzard, Billy Connolly, Ross Noble and Spike Milligan. I saw Spike live on two occasions and both times, I left the theatre will tears rolling down my face and a stomach ache from laughing so hard.

A agree with a lot of that.
I do love Jeff Dunham (he of Achmed the Dead Terrorist fame) he is ,much nearer the knuckle than most US comedians.
My pet hate? Jokes that end with the line "Get it?" And an explanation of the joke. If people don't get it there is no point explaining it. But an expressive country like America telling jokes to an internalising country like the UK must be like pulling teeth - we often enjoy our humour with barely a smile when the Americans would be hollering their laughter.

& the best comedy set I've ever seen must have been Robin Williams. Came on to the Wogan show many (many !) years ago for the normal 10 minute slot to promote his then latest film Goodmoring Vietnam, the normal regime was 3 or so guests spread out over the 45mins. He came on first, took seconds to warm up then took over the entire show with a 45 minute quick fire standup routine, Wogan just sat there couldn't get a word in at all until they went off air.

Rowen Atkinson early stuff inc black adder but defiantly not as Mr bean
spike milligan despite his silly stuff was a genius especially when telling true life stories especially his time served in the war
id agree with Fox's choices but id like to add Richard prior who was a far better comedian than he was an actor

Any comedy that combines intelligence with a sense of transgression makes me laugh .... I enjoy that moment when I'm laughing and the person next to me is gasping in shock .. makes it even funnier to see it hit it's target
