Dire Straights!! PC Problems!!!

Currently I'm having so many problems with my PCs I could spit!!!!
As you may know from my previous thread my netbook went tits up whilst on holiday. I've yet to resolve the issues with that, so that's PC1 not working.
I also have a laptop at home, which has also now decided it won't play nice anymore! Why me???? banghead

This one just won't stay on long enough to transfer any files across to the Macbook pro I bought when the netbook bombed on me. So that's PC2 not working!
So I'm throwing myself on the mercy of the membership worship

. Is there anyone who can resolve these issues for me? I'm happy to travel pretty much anywhere with my PCs if you can assist. I can even bring cake! :grin: I'm loathe to take them to 'regular' pc repair places as I'm not keen on them nosing around and what they may find blink

I understand that further remuneration may be required, but if it helps resolve my issues, I'm ok with that.

Cn't help you too much from this distance Mal (unless you can get a cheapo flight to France wink

)
However, have you thought about getting a USB hard disk reader (obtainable from the usual sources on the net and not expensive), taking the offending hard disk out and popping into a friends PC somewhere near you under your direct supervision and writing the files you need to a DVD?
After verification, you can then delete any sensitive data from the drive before handing it over to a computer shop to fix.
Just a first thought...

So is it possible to take my hard drive out and put it into something else and read the disk through my macbook as an external drive? And then transfer the files I require onto the Mac?

You probably wont be able to read the files from your netbook via your macbook cos they'll most likely be in ze wrong format, what is your file system on the macbook? jorunaled hfs+ ? your netbook is probably fat32 or sumptin and wont be seen by the macbook.
I had a similar issue with some older files from an old pc, in the end I bought an ext hard drive, had it partitioned so that the macbook would read windoze files on the partion made and did it that way.

if you can make it to prestatyn in north wales john is willing to repair there and then. it is a proper repair shop but being swingers we are also discrete. if you take the hard drive out of the netbook the files can be retrieved on a windows pc and then written back so they can be read by the mac

Sarah, thanks very much for the offer. I tried removing the hard drive from the laptop but couldn't get it out, even with the assistance of youTube and the Acer support team! They were bloody useless! Anyway, when I opened the back there were 2 small screws loose which I fitted back in when I put the back on. I think they were securing the hard drive. I've now had the lappy on for a couple of hours (yippee!) without any problems and I'm currently transferring my ITunes music to a standalone hard drive and, as long as it keeps working (fingers crossed), I'll then copy them to my Macbook.
A lot will depend if this lappy keeps working long enough for moving other files and documents later, but I'll keep you (all) informed as to how it goes. I may still need your help later with the netbook, Sarah, as that isn't booting up (see other thread about that) but we'll see what develops.

Yes you can. Macs read FAT formatted drives (standard format for a memory stick). Most PC drives are NTFS which macs can read using an NTFS plugin- but it is painfully slow in reading and writing.
If I wasn't so busy i'd suggest that you sent Mrs Mal over with your dodgy drive and i'd extract the necessary files for you. It would probably take most of the day so i'd have to keep her there and find something to keep us both occupied :twisted:

I'm always busy and working when everybody else has finished work means i never get time for any fun :sad:
