We have heard about " freedom of speech " or what seems the lack of it now.
This story I think should never have even got to court, but it did and thankfully common sense prevailed.

I am fully aware of some things that can or cannot be said, but as a country are people like this Muslim woman taking things a bit too far? The court agreed that she was obviously.
Comedians used to be able to tell jokes about certain sections of our society, but now it seems you can even offend pink fairies. lol
All joking aside....do we still have free speech in this country, or are SOME trying to erode it bit by bit?
I think the story in the link is a prime example of someone using the " religious " card...which makes a change from the race card we hear about daily.
I think this was taken too far, and for once a judge has done the right thing, and maybe it can stop a lot of this nonsense.

thankfully common sense prevailed.

In some cases this is true but there will always be people who call on the authorities when somebody upsets them and they are unable to cope with a little criticism.
But, as you say ....at times common sense will prevail.
What like an admin sort of thing?
Of course there is criticism and then there is slander....check them out.
Still some people have friends in high places, which can help.
Like a judge kinda thing.
All's fair in love and war.....can't remember who said that.

It seems that common sense has prevailed here.
..plenty of time yet
lp
I was disgusted when i watched this on news earlier to today, where protesters waving placards with on it,common sense didnt not prevail in this case am afraid, the old woman had to stand verb abuse from these hoteliers the only reason they won the case is she claimed it took over an hour receiving 'the you are a muslim bin laden'because the witness claimed it only took 5 minutes....''there is no common sense in law its only the commoners who think they can interpret law better'',yet again another miscourage of i wasnt proud to be a christian!
(yes the above is english)
Have boycotted the daily mail and the sun so no thanks to the provided link.

weve never had freedom of speech.
If you write the wrong thing here, you can go to jail.
If you own the wrong books, you can go to jail.
Free country... free to do what youre told!
if it is suspected that you may commit a crime and THINK of commiting a crime or the establishment thinks you think it, and all of the above, you can go to jail.
if the powers that be think you may have conspired with others thinking of commiting a crime, you can go to jail or even the guantanamo hilton.

And yet you, clearly a dissident and non-supporter of HMG, are still here. They aren't doing very well so far.
also from what i hear that because the hoteliers won the case and the Muslim woman lost it will be the taxpayers who pay the legal bills running into the £1000's i think that if this was a private lawsuit then she as the loser in the case should pick up the bill or at least the people who funded her as it was not a 'queen' verses the 'hoteliers'
Tricky one this - none of us were in court, and I doubt anyone has read the transcript.
Of course you can't have people getting in other people's faces and being all shouty because they don't like what they are wearing, or because they don't like your religious beliefs (so long as those beliefs don't include condoning actions that impact on others human rights).
I think you're about right Sara - the tax payer is the loser here - this should never have gone to court really, from what I've read, it seems she was as much to blame by attempting to pursue the argument when the Hoteliers tried to walk away.
Everybody in the UK has total freedom of speech, thought, expression, etc.
With the obvious exception of straight white men.
MI5 and Special Branch are on the look out for us and GCHQ (Government Communications Head Quarters) are bugging our phones and reading our emails!
lol.... religion

The libel and slander laws would suggest otherwise

That bit was meant to be tongue in cheek, come on geeze, you quote the Pistolls EMI in your signature so you should understand irony.
Ironic that the Pistols switched to Virgin who now belong to EMI, who sill sell that record.
But if you think our speech laws are harsh, I have heard it I'd worse in Germany and Canada!
Sorry but freedom of speech no longer exists in 2010 Britain.
Times have changed and you no longer have free speech on the internet or in the real world....to think so I believe is foolish.

There are still one or two groups of people you can say absolutely anything you like about, a late friend of mine took a national newspaper to court for a libelous article, won the case, and was literally awarded pennies. Another friend of mine got nine months prison for something he wrote about somebody on a guest book. I also have friends in the US who daren't come to Europe as they believe they will be arrested here, of course the Americans are protected by their bill of rights first amendment, no wonder they guard it so fiercely.
There's no freedom of speech? what more do you want to say? is there internet forums in china or iran where people are criticizing their government? are you likely to be killed in this country for opposing the government?
if i was to start my own website, i could write what the hell i like on there, i could write a load of conspiracy theory bullshit that wasn't true, such as the world is secretly run by lizard men from space and that the government is nothing but a puppet government or i could accuse my own government of being responsible for terrorist attacks on its own people.
if someone was to accuse you (no one in-particular by the way) in the press or on the internet of something horrible, that you had never done, would you want action taken??

I will say this very slowly.
Free speech has never existed. Not even in the USA, and especially not under the First Amendment, which only applied to a small proportion of the population when it was enacted and still doesn't protect all sorts of people. Lamenting the loss of something you never had is foolish.

The answer is maybe, but compared to us pissed upon Brits the Americans have much more freedom of speech expression and one day when they are able to read our minds they will have more freedom of thought too. We are the most spied upon people in the world, even the Soviets didn't have so many cameras and bugs watching and eavesdropping on their people.
