Friends, wtf?

What is the benefit of being friends with a person on here? I see no possible advantage, yet we get friends requests every day. Usually from people we have never had contact with.
Now before this turns into a squabble about how to deal with random friends requests I understand the value when the site gives you more. But as far as we can tell the site barely benefits us at all in respect of friends requests.
Its slightly different for me I guess but I am friends with the other OPs and Mods because it is easier to contact them using the little chat thingy if I need to for a site related issue.
I have a couple of other friends which I chat too but they are only ones I've known years.
I'm not really answering the question I don't suppose. I certainly don't use the friends lists for randoms or for play mates confused
Well we never bothered til there was shrep n then we did solely for folk we had met or were intending to meet.
What 'chat thingy'? Is there somewhere with a list of the functions that Friends (Groups) give you?
Like the majority of people on here (I imagine) I have zero interest in digging around and discovering functions. Samje wit the offline world. For instance, if I buy a washing machine I want a couple of buttons on the front, a dial for temp and a user guide of less than 3 pages. Any more than that and the seller has failed. Same with websites - I don't want to become an expert in 'how SH works' I just want to use it. If I have to look for a function, work out how to do it and then work out what it actually does for me, you can bet a Twix I won't be using it.
Call me a Luddite if you like - thank you biggrin - but I'm a user not a super-user.
I like being able to see very easily how many of the people I chat with regularly are online - you can see a list of online friends in one of the tabs in the "friends" section. You also get to see online friends in the IM box, which makes it easy to have a natter with people while browsing the site (without going into the chatroom).
That's what I use it for, anyway. dunno

Pretty much the same for me too. I'm quite happy to 'friend' people I know or have chatted to regularly.... people I regard as my 'friends' really. ;)
I clicked on where it says 'Friends' on the left but it just said none of my (28) friends are online. Do you get more stuff if they are online?
Jennifer Aniston and Lisa Kudrow ... hmmmm!!
Oops my mistake, thought this was a thread about the old TV series ....
dunno

If any of your friends are online, then they are shown in that section - so, at a glance, you can see which of your favourite SH people are online. You can also click on the various tabs along the top to see, for example, who has recently been online. I also like that I can click on the "Everyone" tab and navigate to people's profiles really quickly if I want to be nosey and see if they've put new photos up or changed profile text, etc. :-D
Also, if any of your friends are online and logged into IM, provided that you are also logged into IM you'll see the words "Online Friends (x)" in the little box in the bottom right corner (where x=number of your friends who are on IM). You can then easily start IM conversations with them while you browse the site. (The IM function doesn't work on an ipad or iphone browser though).
The other thing you get generally by having "friends" is information in your news feed (assuming you have it switched on) about what they've been doing. For example, if they add other users as friends or post quick comments on other users' profile pages.
I found on other sites I used friends in the same way Lilith says. Though as I have been on here about a week I have a grand total of zero friends!
Though I do hope to rectify that someday...

I'm a tad choosey about who I send a " Friend Request " too.
I don't display my "friends" on my profile purely because that turns into a "watch/hunt/association " game.
The benefits of having friends on here means exactly that - as Swingers we can still enjoy a bond that grows without sex

Oi, where's me birthday snog lol
Sorry to get away from the thread slightly, but I just wondered if I could have a friend? and if I did would it cost me extra? I used to have a friend when I was at school...but then his mum told him he shouldn't have anything more to do with me....and she didn't like the way I looked at his sister.

When's yer buffday then? I thought it was Wednesday? and buffday 'snog' aint a problem, just no tongues ok (on account that I don't know where yours has been)
All of the above seem relevant, but when you get in the realm of hundreds or possibly thousands of friends I just don't see the point.
Likewise I don't see the point in sending friends requests to people you have never spoken too; Does anyone else?
Does being friends mean that private photos are viewable? If so maybe that's why people send friend requests?
Or maybe it's just a kind of 'bookmarking' thing, so that people can contact each other more easily (personally I find the search facility on here isn't that effective, so being friends with someone would simplify that process).
That said, I ignore pretty much all friend requests. Especially those from people we've had no contact with - which is % of them.

Nope. You still need a private album invitation.

Oh - I didn't know that.
Hmm - I'll probably still ignore the friend requests from strangers though. I can't imagine having time to keep on top of it otherwise.
That's not to say that we get loads of friend requests, cos we don't - I just don't really have that much spare time wink
