What do you make of this ? ;

Just a week or two back there was a press conference by the head of MI5, denying any involvement of the security services in torture allegations, so why wasn't this case allowed to go to court ? A multi million pound cave in,even the true figure is secret although it's apparently less than £30 million !!!!!!! Of TAX PAYERS MONEY WTF !!!!
They should fund it from TB's and GB's pension.

The justice secretary, Kenneth Clarke, told the Commons that the settlements avoided a protracted and expensive legal process.
He told MPs: "The alternative to any payments made would have been protracted and extremely expensive litigation in an uncertain legal environment in which the government could not be certain that it would be able to defend departments and the security and intelligence agencies without compromising national security.
"The cost was estimated at approximately £30m to £50m over three to five years of litigation."
Seems like reasonable logic to me.
Actions of the previous Government means that the current Government stands to lose a lot if this goes to court, Tony Blair creates the problem, Cherie Blair defends the rights of those detained, and the taxpayer ends up footing the bill, which is potentially astronomical due to the likes of Cherie Blair doing all she can to get a crippling settlement, whilst the current Government do all they can to delay proceedings in an effort to protect national security, with Cherie Blair further lining her pockets and enhancing her reputation.
Todays decision seems like the lesser of two evils.

IMO, this is the cheapest way out of this cock up. Court cases which would drag on for years would cost far more.
And if they have been tortured and no charges ever brought against them, then in my mind they deserve every penny. Those that have been charged and found guilty are still entitled to the money, but I would not be so happy with it.

I'm in complete agreement on that one, shame It won't happen ! Although this case is supposedly now settled, the inference is that we've tortured these detainees and this opens the door to more settlements as mentioned in the Guardian article, not good !

If we as a nation have tortured people of our own nation or any other nation.......then damn right we should pay. Not paying is bad.

the payouts will contain gagging clauses to protect the real criminals.

And here comes the problem with all this, It's kind of like a 'legal no mans land',no guilt or innocence has been proven either way, no torture has been proven.........but the fact that the government has spent several £million of tax payers money speaks volumes !
Take a look at this documentary;

I agree with Dave Notts,I am very uneasy that the UK has been using torture,even If the government are laughably trying to deny It ! This would be alot more paletable If there was a courtcase,don't forget some of these people are British citizens,they are just as entitled to a fair trial as you or I,not this Kafkaesque ,If in the future we face an enemy that is also willing to break the geneva convention,do we really have the moral high ground anymore, I don't think so !
"hey kenty, wanna come on holiday with me?"

Most are British citizens,sorry you're wrong on that count,holidaying visiting relatives or genuine terrorists........we don't know,which is exactly my point,because there's been no trial or evidence against the detainees,of course this is a very powerful recuiting tool for real Islamic are you happy with the torture element then,is that ok,or is it only bad when it's used against our troops ?
By the way,i'm not from Kent,I'm from Bristol,the name has more to do with taste in music that where I live;

There's a wonderful tool provided at enormous expense by the SH team at the bottom right hand corner of the Posting screen. It's a blue tick headed ABC and guess what its purpose is....
Pity it doesn't check for spaces after commas though lol

Ditto, and your use of capitalisation is also questionable. 'if' and 'it' only require a capital 'i' when at the beginning of a sentence. Geneva requires one (a capital) as it is a proper noun. A few well placed full stops and spaces would not go amiss, either.

Nice confused
They may not be terrorists, but they sure don't sound like people I'd want to befriend, or have living next door.

My post was aimed at kentswingers wink
There is a big big difference between a british citizen and being british.
I don't read the mirror.
And, in my experience, people who pick up on other peoples spelling normally do so because they can't argue a point, but I could be wrong :wink:
I don't have any problem with torture.
I'll ask you this medway,
if your child had been kidnapped and the police had the man in a cell but he would not tell them where your child is and the child would die within 24hrs, and the copper said;
" I can torture him to get your childs location"
What would you say?

I disagree with the bold bit (I'm quite capable of arguing a point and correcting spelling!), but agree with your first point. If it were my child - torture the kidnapper. No question.

It is true some were British, some have applied for political asylum, but thats not the point, the British Authorities did not arrest them, the British authorities did not detain them.
Thier alledged crimes were not proved they are innocent
Torture against them has not been proved, the alledged torturers are innocent
They were not interned by the British Government they were interned by the USA
One was travelling on a forged passport
There was intelligence reports which gave reasonable doubt as to thier reasons for being where they were which certainly gave reason for suspicion and investingation.
In the case of those who had applied for Asylum in the UK and then left the country to go to Pakistan or Afghanistan surely they are no longer the responsibility of the UK
It is believed that thier intentions were to either
Fight and kill British or American soldiers
Train in the art of terrorism for attacks on the USA and Great Britain.
