I have traced my fathers side back to the 1600's and to the Huguenot's.
There is also Jewish 3 generations back on my fathers side
On my mother side my great grandmother who I remember visiting was Italian. There is also Irish on my mothers fathers side 3 generations back.
I am bit of a mongrel.
Might be why some might see me as a mutt wink
Ich bin sehr englisch......ish! lol
My dad's side we've never looked into. They washed their hands of us completely when he died when I was nine, frankly I don't give a flying one where they're from, and as his sole heir their line is gonna die with me, it's not worth the time and energy, noone to pass it on to! Bit harsh that isn't it, maybe? Ah, fuck 'em! lol
Me mam's lot are great though, Scots of Viking stock. You don't get much more chuffin' mental than Scot / Viking hybrids, do you, and surprisingly hardy. Seems my lot left the Shetlands where the longboats first landed, making their way down through the highlands to the lowland areas around Glasgow. Clearly they found it still too chuffing cold and always raining or something and made their way still further south to warmer climes. Or it might have had more to do with my Grandad being Catholic and me Grandma being Orange and pregnant though not yet married. Bloody Catholics, never could keep it in their trousers, could they, and you know how that whole Celtic / Rangers thing is, even now? As a blacksmith it can't have been for want of work, not with the shipyards and everything. One of my uncles has done a fair bit on the tree, need to get together one day while he's still here to see just how far, it's something I'd like to look into more.

Interesting you mention Jewish .... Both sides of my family appear to have silversmiths and/or money lenders involved at some point and with the East End connection (and my nose) I once suggested to my Dad that we may be Jewish lol
Now ....my Dad was an extremely reasonable mild mannered sort of bloke .....generally
He went all weird on me ........funny thing prejudice
We could be related rotflmao
Just don't mention that Winston Churchill descended from the Huguenot's
Some would hate to think he might have french in him.
Got mine back to 1650 in Gloucester. Supposed to have come to England in early 1600's when the Catholics hounded the Huguenot Protestants out of France. Evidence that we were here well before that. Reckon we arrived with Willi the Conq's army at Pevensey Bay in Sussex. Have walked across the Bay, (different now) and thought that I may be walking where my ancestor who was probably a French peasant walked.......not come very far!!!!!!!!!! The name is very common in France though, like Thomas and Jones in Wales.
Smooth1
Interesting melding of 3 concepts.
How English am I? 100%.
What is my genetic history? Very strongly Viking on both sides - my father's side via the Normans. Who as we all know were an earlier Viking incursion into N France.
And my cultural history? We had pit-lads, mill-girls, an opera singer, baker/confectioners, emigrants to Canada, US and Australia, a WW1 hero, a WW1/WW2 survivor, at least 3 masons, a steam-train driver, a man who left £4000 to 2 publicans and not his wife or 3 children and an indomitable lady who I sadly only got to know in her 80's when I was a child. Of course the majority of my ancestors are the same as almost everyone else's - Ag Labs - Agricultural Labourers.
As I am godlike, and as god is an Englishman, then I guess I'm English smile
Historically as far back as we can tell then my fathers side of the family were immigrant Russian and french peasantry and ended up in N London. On my mothers side we are from the midlands and up until the early nineteenth century agricultural workers then moving into Birmingham and working primarily in the arms factories until post WW2. most of my family still reside either in the London s/east region or In Birmingham. My Partner J hails from Leeds and so I married a barbarian. Is a Barbarian English?
0% English ... Dads family is viking swede mums is clan Mcloed ... Very British though ... No one apart from the English like the English I heard ... Won't be any true English soon anyway .... All sorts making international babies ... Thank god the queens still around ... Now she is English and rocks too.
Oh god played for Liverpool when they were winners .. Number 7 used the name Dalglish .... Was at Celtic but hey .... Even god has to start amongst dirty micks with terrorist republican fans ....
Asked him for his daughters mobi ... Thought I was after his autograph ... Didn't like it it appeared ... Is the god thing real then? Seems like a tax for idiots for priests to bugger to me?
If it is I'm fooked and off to the firey hell after my capers ahem ahem ... Were the crusades after he got done by the Romans? Oops his son that one .. If after we took it off the filthy Saracens Jesus technically could play for England ... Still wouldn't get past the quarters lol

Lies! Losty, if you were even remotely like unto God then you would know that Yorkshire is God's Own County and Leeds is its beating heart. You might struggle to find a divine presence on a Saturday night out down the city centre right enough but it is there. Some of the girlies look a bit divine anyways, as I'm sure you've already found. So there! :P

everyone knows that god's country is the county of Devon...
Causes endless confusion this Stevie ( a bit like you in that respect, what with the endless bloody name changes every week and what have you! :P ) . . . .
Devon is twinned with God's Own County. Twinned with. Like wot Leeds and Munich are. We let Devon have a bit of the Godliness is all, let 'em bask in the warm glow so a bit rubs off on 'em, you know. That's all.

The divine women in Leeds city center on Saturday night are indeed divine along with being hard as nails and scary as all of bloody hell. Far scarier than the blokes! lol
As for the counties of Yorks...I'll grant you there is nothing quite like the beauty of the place. It's awesome.
Classic british mongrel here. The only interesting folk in my ancestral line were travelling players. The rest appear to have shovelled shit from one heap to another.
y ancestors arrived on English shores at the battle of Hastings in 1066, believe they did good so we stayed, not sure how English that make me

My lot didn't do well. Got granted most of Suffolk by William the Bastard (Conqueror) then backed the wrong claimant in the argument between Henry and John Curthose 2 generations later - Henry became Henry I, we took up arms for John of the short trousers. The titles and lands were duly stripped and we were lucky to be minor landowners until the 16th century when we downsized to Ag Labs. Bloody typical - otherwise you might have been referring to me as 'my lady'. :giggle:

Unlucky. Still, I guess you'd find any number of willing volunteers happy to refer to you as 'my lady', among other things if that's what floats your boat, so it's not all bad, is it? We must endeavour to look for the positives in this situation Foxy, as always.
Personally speaking I don't give a toss where anyone's ancestors came from, if they live in Britain it is how they conduct thier lives here, it is where they have an alegiance to now, it is how they respect the customs and laws of this land they use as a home.
Shehab El-Din Ahmed El-Miniawi is a muslim who normally lives in this Country but at the moment he has gone to fight for what he believes in over there in Afghanistan, may he have a safe time and return soon to the land he calls home.

That would be an impure mongrelly type soup of Scandinavian and NW European with possibly a bit of French in there as well?
