I'll second that emotion and all my prayers go to those in need atm
I totally agree, gutting and horiffic. However on a slightly lighter note can you imagine how the BA marketing manager felt when his new ad aired today.
Lessons for a finer life.
Lesson 24
How To Ride A Wave.
Ouch, talk about timing!
Dont know enough about it to write too intelligent a comment but... didnt the mayans and nostradamus predict the end of the world in 2012?
Sure when I read or saw something about it, it stated there would be an increase in civil wars, natural disasters etc.
I wonder if there may be some truth in it or just coincidence?
Nostradamus didn't predict anything...his 'predictions' are so vague they can fit any circumstance you want them to
The Mayan calendar ends in 2012 this is not necessarily a prediction of the end of the world....chances are they just thought that they'd gone far enough and had a few centuries before they had to get round to the rest of it
The earthquake is a tragedy....but if it was going to hit anywhere Japan is the place most able to deal with it...they have plans and infrastructure in place for such events...earthquakes are nothing new to the Japanese,we can only hope that the size of this one hasn't left them totally unprepared
On the plus side, good to see that the Pacific area Tsunami Warning System appears to have much better coverage and communications got out wider than they did on that fateful Boxing Day.
More scary are Japan's nuclear power stations, which have been dogged with rumours and breaches of safety protocols for several decades
Sadly Staggerlee, I'm not so sure Japan is the place most able to deal with this type of accident.
you might not be able to help the japanese at the present moment but you could help the one million pakistanis who are still camping in the hills and who have nothing after their earthquake last year...the world is constantly full of suffering its the way of things
Well said medway.
Let's hope that they can rebuild their lives soon. The world presently is not a better place without a strong Japan.
I went to Anfield (Liverpool fc) last night to watch an awful match, and observe an impeccable one minute silence for the quake victims.
Somethin we're told that anfield always ovbserve exceptionally well...
As to predictions - Japan is on one of the most volcanically/tectonically (I think I made those words up but you know what I mean) active regions on teh planet. A 3 day old chipmunk would have little difficulty predicting they would, at some time, have a really serious quake/tsumai event. As has been said, Nostradamus is irrelavent gobbledigook and the Mayans probably just got bored. They were carving it into stone - I reckon I would have stopped my calendar a week next Thursday.
What comes out of things like this is a) human's capacity for coming up with really stupid justifications for purely natural events - all based around humans, humans, humans - very ego-centric and arrogant and b) human's capacity for generosity of action, courage and care of damaged/hurt strangers and c) the fragility of life on one hand and the capacity for endurance in the frailest humans on the other.
Also, not one bit of looting reported.
Compare that with hurricane katrina........................
