Use the outside lane, over take them, then move back into the middle lane, if it is safe to do so.

Trouble is thats not always possible......Cant use the outside lane when towing so your then stuck behind the middle lane hogger untill they have a momentary lapse of concentration and use the inside lane...
With the exception of creating space for a vehicle pulling out of something like a slip road, or services, why would a vehicle restricted to 50mph even venture into the middle lane?
So I can pass something thats going slower than me......Like HGV's smile
In edit....
Didn't see DG's post which basically says the same as mine but she has a faaaaaaaaar nicer avatar than me redface
When on a motorway I nearly always set the cruise control at 68/69 M.P.H. this nearly always results in me being stranded in the middle lane with lorries on one side of me and idiots on the other.
Bicycles should not pay duty, as far as I'm aware present levels of MOTOR vehicle duty are set to reflect the damage the relevant vehicle does to the planet and road, as a cyclist I await my cheque eagerly
Well I think at the very least cyclists should be made by law to have insurance.
They jump red lights, adults ride on the pavements and are a bloody nuisance.
If one scratches your car, see how easy it will be to get money out of them, especially if they are a child.
I have more rights to use the road as I have to pay for mot's and insurance, and have to have my car in a roadworthy condition. A lot of cyclists do not even have lights on of a night.
Sorry off topic I know.

Oh yes and ps.....IF there are any people reading this who still continue to use your mobile whilst driving, I hope they throw the book at you when you are caught!

Hear hear!!! I was recently snail-pacing down a busy dual carriageway in rush hour in Manchester and there was a bloke in the left hand lane on his mobile and making a complete arse of himself (lane position etc). A woman in the car behind me got out at the lights, banged on his window and gave him a mouthfull about getting off the fecking phone! It was soooo funny watching his face. Like a goldfish that'd been electrocuted.
Back to the main topic - the two that really pee me off are those that drive in the outside lane when the motorway's empty, and those who are pulling a trailer but still go into the outside lane to overtake. Both recipes for a disaster.

Not all of us. Whilst I agree, some cyclists do jump the lights and it is annoying, it's even more annoying when I'm on my bike sitting at the lights and someone does it, I'm the first to shout after him/her. Please don't put us all in the same bracket with your generalisations Mr Kenty... I know how to sit a bike.
I also have insurance, tax and an MOT for my car and I think you'll find that if you check the highway code, just because you are a car driver, you do not have more rights on the road. You have a duty of care towards other road users regardless of their form of transport. A little more care and consideration by everyone would go a long way.
see the above would have worked had it not been on a new page ........bugger !!!!!

Kenty, that's just like the sort of thing that you'd rant about if the same sweeping generalisation had been made about motorcyclists, does it not?
Witchy:
Car Driver
Motorcyclist
Cyclist
Pedestrian
And person who realises that there are fuckwits on/in all modes of transport.
I think that there should be a mandatory test before anyone takes a bicycle on or near to a road.
Many cyclists believe that the Highway Code simply does not apply to them.
I was taught to get off my bike and walk it rather than undertake and to respect all traffic signals and road signs. I don't think people pay any attention to things like that these days.
Then again, they don't ride penny farthings anymore

The only car I've ever scratched was the bonnet of the taxi that pulled out on me...he gave me a false telephone no. and drove off before I could gather my wits enough to take his license plate...therefore all drivers are scum....it's easy to generalise

My generalisations?
Excuse me for speaking. Was it not David Cameron himself not too long ago, doing this on his way to the House of Commons?
Our future leader jumping lights and mounting the pavement? Wrong way around bollards. Still am sure he is the only cyclist that does that kinda thing.

Oh dear.....seems not only Mr. Cameron jumps lights and other things not legal.
Still excuse my " generalisations " .........won't you.

Just because some do silly things, doesn't mean you can generalise and say they all do. And you don't have any more right to use the road.
Where did I say they all did that exactley? Or was that just your interpritation?
Blimey how careful you have to be in what one says.
Sorry but as I pay to use the roads and some do not, then I think that whilst I do have to look out for cyclists ( and I do btw ),I still feel they should have to have insurance, to use the roads.

Maybe if you don't want to appear to generalise, you should qualify your statements with 'some'.
And just because you have insurance and not all cyclists do, still doesn't mean you have more right to use the road than they do.
Once again you jump the gun.
Did I ever say that I have more rights than they do?
It was an opinion with regards to insurance. I will wait for you to not clarify something exactly right, then will pick you up on it, the same you have done to me.
I think you knew perfectly well what I was saying FB, and in what capacity too.

Just because you pay, doesn't give you more right to use the road - it's a public highway. Not a 'highway for those who pay for it', unless of course it's a toll paying road, in which case, they do have to pay to use it (as far as I'm aware) as well as any other vehicle. If they don't have lights on, it's not a problem to you if you have yours on and are driving with due care and attention for other road users.
Well excuse me...I stand corrected...........jeeze.
What a touchy bunch. wink

Its usually our blue rinse brigade that do it

There is a something like that in operation on the Isle of Man i think.
With regard to the motorways, the law says that you should use the inside lane to drive in,and the outer two lanes for overtaking is an offence to sit for a prolonged period of time in the middle or outside lane when the inside is clear.
Vehicles with trailers/caravans arent allowed in the outside lane.

It's also dangerous, you could get run over.
