... Roads are for CARS! ... and anyone towing a caravan should only be allowed to drive between the hours of 2am and 6am Mon - Fri and not at all on weekends :P

If everyone abided by the speed limit then being stuck behind a caravan there wouldn't be an issue ! wink
Speed Limits for Caravans
Caravans are limited to a lower speed limit than cars. Anything between 10 and 20 mph less than cars. Combine this with those that dawdle along at 50 on the motorway (I dont blame em, towing a caravan can be a terrifying experience) and 18 wheelers trying to maintain an efficient 55 mph or so and we have a recipe for road congestion.
... and another thing ... traffic jams at roadworks ... mostly avoidable. We get warned that a lane is closed miles before we get there, but stupid fuckers all try and wait till the last minute to move over, causing the jam ... if everyone moved over early on, we'd all be in the right lane by the time we need to be and the traffic would flow much faster!
... but caravan drivers, limited hours as I already posted ... bastards! wink

Something tells me you do not like caravans? I do not know what gives me that thought really.

I found when driving on the continent that they all stayed in their own lanes and filtered in at the end. In the UK it is because everyone moves over early that it starts a major concertina effect.

Don't worry , I don't like lorry drivers either

Can't see how that works, the one time where everyone filtered over early whilst driving on the M1, was the time that everyone got past the roadworks without any delay, every other time, it's the people trying to push in right at the last few yards, that cause the other lanes to come to a near stand still.

You are thinking about UK drivers and putting them in the equation. Continental drivers usually speed up or down to allow the filtering, near the end, to run smoothly.
In the UK they bomb like hell to the end and then bully their way in. Then people think "Sod that" and drive up the car in front and not let them in. Thus they all come to a screaming halt.
I used to watch it happen on the continent and it worked for them. Lane closures were never a problem when I was over there.

Even caravanners dont have problems on the continent. People overtake and give room, they dont see how close they can get to see how much the van will sway, and they seem to treat each other with a bit of respect, and considering caravanners pay more to actually be on the road, and bring a lot of money into this country, maybe some of the impatient drivers in this country could start showing a little respect.
As a caravanner who always drives at the legal speed limit, who pulls over on single carrage roads to let others pass, and who has travelled thousadns of miles in this country and abroad, I stand back and await the onslaught lol
just a thought.....
if someone is doing 70mph in the middle lane..... shouldn't anyone be wanting to overtake anyway? wink innocent bolt

In this country it isn;t taught that we should each allow one person in or out of our lane. If we did, traffic would move MUCh more smoothly.
I do it - in Brum - just to see the astonished expressions as people realise they are being allowed to maneouver. It's good fun - go on, people, try it.

I see, and yes, that's exactly how UK drivers behave so create the very problem they want to avoid.

You forgot to mention the male trait of then looking forward, as though they are wearing blinkers, refusing to acknowledge the existence of any vehicle but the one in front.
LOL Essex the "I cant see you technique", I remember Jasper Carrot having a little comedic rant about that some years ago and nearly wetting myself.

I towed a caravan for the first time a couple of weekends ago and I didn't notice anyone behind me.

lol

Finally

That's great ... Now all we need is to stop the HGV's playing silly buggers when they are restricted to 56mph trying to overtake each other and taking 5 minutes to do it.. (ex HGV driver BTW) and all the silly old buggers driving at 55mph because they think it's economical. (Thats 2 lanes stuck at 56 mph, 14mph under the national limit.  Not to mentoion caravans.... Serious I'm not going there!
I am a middle lane hogger and proud of it.. (In a car) I dont have to spend majority of my time indicating from the inside lane to the middle lane to the fast lane and then back into the middle to go back to the inside to catch up with some prick that cant manage to cope with the speed limit that makes me change lanes again..
My fuel consumption went up when trying to do so.  Sorry I am becoming a Tree Hugger and saving my carbon foot-print by staying in the middle lane and using the outside lane when I happen to catch up with an inconsiderate driver that is unable to drive at a safe national limit. (which IMHO is way to low for modern cars and their stopping distance)
And 0 points on my license and I don't have to lane hop all the fecking time.
But on a side note I am so pleased that a number of rubber neckers on the M25 have been charged.  Both dangerous  to other drivers and sick to film a crash.
I have no issues with people sat in the middle lane if they are overtaking, but i do take offence at silly o'clock when im on the motorway and there is some random person going at 60 in the middle lane on an empty motorway rolleyes bet your bottom dollar if i undertook them id get nabbed for it
Totally agreed about the HGV drivers, and the coach drivers seem to do the same thing.; Just driving sensibly seems to be a thing of the past now :/
