When some have said that being a Mod doesn't make you the most popular person around they are quite correct!!

So, those who are concerned about this pleasebe reassured. Thanks for expressing that concern here... x xx

Just out of interest, how do you decide on who becomes mods? Is it like a vote where you have several members then choose? When do you decide new mods are needed? Is it every X number of members?

This is one of those popularity contests - not a good thing here in my view. Never indulge in 'em - that's my position and advice to others.
Sorry!

of course we'd need to send one of the chatphobic forum mods over to the chatroom to take her place, which could be highly entertaining!

Well much as I hate to do this, the best examples of mods I have seen are, well the mods.
Overall there is a consistent approach to things. There seems to be 'a plan' (athough one sometimes wonders if it the word PLAN on a piece of paper, sorry pratchett moment). There is nearly always a mod online, pretty much 24 x 7. They respond damn quick to any form of electronic communication, and they bring colour, comedy, and lots more to the site...
What makes a good mod on sh, damned if I could put it into words very well, but Mark seems to have got it right

Like I said I won’t get into the popularity contest thingy, but the subject of what makes a good moderator is intriguing.
I think a good moderator is:
Consistent: That generally requires them to be a fairly well balanced personality but also to have thought things through where common practice is to be applied.
Good under pressure: Not phased by strong or aggressive characters – ready to act sensibly on own initiative when urgent circumstances require.
Collaborative: With the other mods to ensure that the place is run on a consistent basis but also to hear other experienced people’s views.
Good judge of character: It really helps if you can read between the lines to see if someone is being genuine, is a troll or has a damaging agenda.
Generous: Is prepared to explain privately, if necessary, but publicly if others need to learn, why certain actions have been taken.
Hard working: Prepared to put in the time to a lot bone-aching activity on the fora/ads etc.
Good written communication: Essential to avoid misunderstandings.
Competent: No room for airheads.
Intelligent: Needs to be able to hold a sound argument in a controlled way.
Selfless: Prepared to give up their leisure time for the benefit of others.
Innovative: Look at the exchanges on northcoastboy's thread on Missy's good idea on the photoads.
There’s probably more and a GSOH definitely helps!
I don’t suppose Mark has ever analysed it thus but he has made a pretty good job of finding the best people around who fit those criteria in my view.
I tried to re-arrange the criteria into a snappy acronym (‘cos I love doing that sort of thing!) but I gave up – too many Cs and Gs.

I'd go for SexySteph to be Mof for a Day.
She's very helpful, does not rub people up the wrong way, is not sarcastic and bitchy, knows how to organise stuff, does not seem to have 'cronies' and is generally a good-egg.
In other words, is quite the opposite of me!

Does being unpopular make for being a good mod?

Being a chatroom op.....Unpopular is second nature to me....:rotflmao:
