it's just a piece of thinking nonsense. No we are not going to appoint Mods for a Day   costhye shock would kill all of us and the training would take longer than that
When some have said that being a Mod doesn't make you the most popular person around they are quite correct!! redface All I wanted to do was 1) inject some form of thinking exercise into the forum and 2) see if your ideas about what makes a good Mod co-incides with ours.
So, those who are concerned about this pleasebe reassured. Thanks for expressing that concern here... x xx

Just out of interest, how do you decide on who becomes mods? Is it like a vote where you have several members then choose? When do you decide new mods are needed? Is it every X number of members?

I'd go for SexySteph to be Mof for a Day.
She's very helpful, does not rub people up the wrong way, is not sarcastic and bitchy, knows how to organise stuff, does not seem to have 'cronies' and is generally a good-egg.
In other words, is quite the opposite of me!

This is one of those popularity contests - not a good thing here in my view. Never indulge in 'em - that's my position and advice to others.
Sorry!

I'm with Tune.
Being popular doesn't necessarily make a good moderator.
What they said.
Indeed - what they said
Perhaps it's not about who is popular....but who is most unpopular, making them a mod for a day could be considered a punishment wink
My nomination for Mod for the Day would be Espy......
The reasons being:....
he's polite,
can be firm but fair,
always hepful to all
seems to understand the intricacies of IT
nice sense of humour

Like I said I won’t get into the popularity contest thingy, but the subject of what makes a good moderator is intriguing.
I think a good moderator is:
Consistent: That generally requires them to be a fairly well balanced personality but also to have thought things through where common practice is to be applied.
Good under pressure: Not phased by strong or aggressive characters – ready to act sensibly on own initiative when urgent circumstances require.
Collaborative: With the other mods to ensure that the place is run on a consistent basis but also to hear other experienced people’s views.
Good judge of character: It really helps if you can read between the lines to see if someone is being genuine, is a troll or has a damaging agenda.
Generous: Is prepared to explain privately, if necessary, but publicly if others need to learn, why certain actions have been taken.
Hard working: Prepared to put in the time to a lot bone-aching activity on the fora/ads etc.
Good written communication: Essential to avoid misunderstandings.
Competent: No room for airheads.
Intelligent: Needs to be able to hold a sound argument in a controlled way.
Selfless: Prepared to give up their leisure time for the benefit of others.
Innovative: Look at the exchanges on northcoastboy's thread on Missy's good idea on the photoads.
There’s probably more and a GSOH definitely helps!
I don’t suppose Mark has ever analysed it thus but he has made a pretty good job of finding the best people around who fit those criteria in my view.
I tried to re-arrange the criteria into a snappy acronym (‘cos I love doing that sort of thing!) but I gave up – too many Cs and Gs.
If I could nominate someone to be a Mod for a day, it would have to be............ me!
My reason being rolleyes ......... I am a total bitch evil so I am sure I will fit right in wink
Well much as I hate to do this, the best examples of mods I have seen are, well the mods.
Overall there is a consistent approach to things. There seems to be 'a plan' (athough one sometimes wonders if it the word PLAN on a piece of paper, sorry pratchett moment). There is nearly always a mod online, pretty much 24 x 7. They respond damn quick to any form of electronic communication, and they bring colour, comedy, and lots more to the site...
What makes a good mod on sh, damned if I could put it into words very well, but Mark seems to have got it right smile

i mean if i was being a selfish pompos git il vote for myself..... smile
but i am not so there.

Hey! I wouldn't make a good mod at all. I'd be a very BAD mod because I like being bad. wink
I go with the idea of M2PU as mod for a day. :giggle:
Give him a chance to get his own back, poor fellow!
And if I were ever PM victim of the week I wouldn't reply to any of them 'cos if I did It'd take me the rest of my life as I'm also bad at PMming.
BAD is good! .....................................er..................................
well BAD, which is ......................................Oh shit! redface surprisedops:

Does being unpopular make for being a good mod?
If so I reckon I could do the job biggrin

I know yer tongue is in yer cheek but I didn't mean that being a mod was a popularity thingy. What I meant was that this thread was turning into a popularity contest - it still is - bad thing!!
Since then I've posted, in all seriousness what I think makes a good mod but it got lost on page 2 - similar to Steph's - I'd really welcome a serious debate on the subject.
Sorry tune I was guilty of triteness here before.
In all seriousness I think a good mod has to be someone who doesn't court popularity.
That's my serious point of view.

I dont worry about wether folk like me or not I just try to do the job as best I can.
A good mod must be fair
A good mod must be firm
A good mod must be resolute
A good mod must be loyal
A good mod must be stable
A good mod must be Bloody Nuts

The ability to work as part of a team
Intelligence
An abundance of Patience
A TTTT destruct need
Plenty of time
A good intuition on people based on what they post
The ability to take it on the chin if they fook up

Does being unpopular make for being a good mod?

no, but I reckon being a mod could make you quite unpopular with some!
lol So you could be half way there steve afterall! ;) kiss
I think above all fairness and a willingness to self-evaluate. If you've made a bad decision then the ability to hold ones hands up and say "i'm sorry, I made a mistake" show great strength of character as does sticking by the choices you've made based on reasoning.
Either way, "Mr or MIss Popular" this week will undoubtably be out of favour as soon as they were modded up. A thick skin not to care too much would come in handy there as I reckon you get to know who are your real friends quite quickly when you're put in a postion like moderator.
