Speeding? Good god really? KILL THEM!
The speed limit in the motorway is too low and like most stupid laws and regulations in the UK needs bringing up to date. In fact, rather than upping the speed limit we ought to get with the real world and have variable speed limits depending on road and traffic conditions.
There are stretches of most of the motorway system where 50mph from - 11pm would probably be about right. By the same token there are open stretches of the M6 (for example) north of Lancaster where 100 mph would be perfectly reasonable with reductions to 70mph on the bendy bits. In situations like this the outside lane should have a minimum speed of 70mph.
Just to a bit controversial, is there not a case for motorcycles having a much higher limit on the motorway system when riding solo? Granted 4 people in a car is a missile packed with humanity but a sole biker taking his own risks? Why is personal risk being legislated out of our lives anyway? Have you not noticed that since the government started legislating to protect us from our own stupidity (it started with the helmet laws) the "blame culture" has increased in proportion?
Anyway - back to the topic - YES - the speed limit is too low (in places).
Problem: SPECS not only operates from camera-to-camera but from start-camera to end-camera (ie: not just from 1 to 2, but from 1 to 5, 1 to 8, 8 to 16)
In any case, you can only go as fast as the slowest vehicle....and on m/ways you notice that lanes one and two are full of trucks...limited to 56 mph (and on s/c limited by law to 40 mph)...and now you can have lane three full of vans with limiters as well....
Since, because of traffic problems, you are not able to achieve more than 30mph on certain motorway roads, HMG are minded to increase VED to account for the extra time you are using this public facility and to account for the greater contribution made to greenhouse gases.
The new SPECS camera's are accordingly being reprogrammed.
They reduced the speed limit to 50mph whilst doing the 'improvements' on the M4 between Newport and Cardiff. Now most of that work is finished, the speed limit is still 50 and they've installed those bloody average speed cameras to boot! It's added an extra 20 minutes onto a regular 30 mile journey now. Tis a pain in the ass for sure
