Of course if there was unlimited free parking at all train stations there would surely be less cars on the road, but that would be for another thread.
BG.

Not at prices like this

A thousand pounds for a train journey isn't a price I'd consider paying. I'd be tempted to look for a bargain flight between two nearby airports. It is a long way though, I wouldn't want to drive it, and wonder how much it would cost fuel wise to make such a trip.
A thousand quid....no wonder people use their cars.
Yes in some places it is almost impossible to even do 60mph on a motorway, but when motorways are relatively quite, it should be increased.
I still think though that a 70mph speed limit may well have been fine in the 60's, it is impractical now.

I guess the fuel cost to drive wouldn't be any more than £300 but I wouldn't want to drive it either. In all fairness it is a first class walk on fare....but even still £1000 is a hell of a lot of money.
My son thought I was joking when I told him that private car ownership would probably disappear during his lifetime.
Infrastructure and alternatives are the key and for long journeys you cant beat the train. Eighty quid gets you from kent to north west wales in under 5 hours. You can just about manage that in a car if you are lucky and you can beat the price if your car is capable of doing 40 plus to the gallon at 70-90 mph. Of course if more people used the train the price would go down.
Rather than increasing speed limits or building more roads I think we need to devise a comprehensive transport strategy that takes into account all of the important issues.
Fair point flower, as part of a comprehensive review id like to see community bicycle schemes like they have in french cities and better buses and cheaper taxis, most of which I think could be funded by the money currently spent on buying maintaining and running private cars. On a personal level lets assume a reasonable car costs a grand a year to run. That pays for a fair few taxis and bus fares.
Oh I forgot to mention freight, we have a rail infrastructure yet most freight is carried overland on individual lorries which has always beggared belief. Oh and did I mention canals, canals could be part of the plan.
Yeah lets all become cyclists and walk everywhere too.
Do people really seriously think that the vast majority of people would give their cars up?
The trains and the underground in London cannot cope at the moment, the rise by a mere 5% would push the trains to breaking point in rush hour times.
It is all well and good saying about the infrastructure, but to improve it costs money...lots of it.
The car is blamed for all sorts of nasties by the cyclist, but until a viable cheap alternative is found, people will never give their cars up.
If more people used the trains to say the fares would come down is naive in the extreme.
That is like saying if nobody claimed on their car insurance for two years, they would drop the prices. No they would not they would just use another excuse to up the price.
I do not know what the answer is, but to own a car and use it is still something people will never give up. It is purely the ease of getting out of your house and your car is right there.
Not a bus ride to a train station, or massive car parking charges at stations...that really helps.
The car is here to stay and I cannot wait for me new Merc. lol
Aother fair point flower, we have a similar problem with Snowdon but being wales we dont have a road up it so we walk.

Try the other side of the mountain. They have a railway lol
Dave_Notts
LOL Dave the railway up snowdon never crosses my mind, at £82 to get a family of four to the summit its more like a voluntary taxation system for the tourists.
That said, although I have never tried it with kids, can you imagine the cries of " are we there yet" and "my legs are aching" from the under tens as you struggle up the Pyg Track.
So without cars - what are we supposed to do about shopping? I can't carry 8 carrier bags 10 miles from Asda to my house. I'm NOT paying the extorionate prices at the Tesco Local and shopping daily is a waste of time and resources. Bulk buying is the only way of keeping costs down.
What about getting to work? We cannot all live walking distance of work. There can't possibly be public transport from every house to every work place. And I object enough to the wasted time of being at work (I only work for the money). Walking to work would take 2 hours each way and public transport simply doesn't exist. Cycling would be the same as walking - since after the first 3 miles I would be walking and pushing the damned thing.
Getting away from the roads and cars is great - but life without a car cannot be done for the vast majority of people.
Oh I agree foxy life without a car in rural wales would be really difficult at present.
Sadly we wont have much choice for much longer.
Thats why I think we need to start planning properly.
We are getting trams in Edinburgh....its really going to solve the Car problems!!!! rolleyes
There was a funny story about two years ago on the Gaunty show. I cannot remember the guys name but he was something to do with environmental issues, and how people should use their cars less and get smalled cars to use....save the planet and all that crap.
But.....Gaunties team had done their homework on this guy and halfway through the show Gaunty asked him what car he drove. He muttered some rubbish and when really pushed he ran a.............wait for it.......a 13 year old BMW 7 series. A gas guzzler and with a 4ltr engine in it doing about 10 to the gallon.
What a hypocrite he was.....and there are many out there. The cyclist huggers who think in their world cars are the root of damnation. Tosh.
People are switching to much smaller cars, but the rise in cars on our roads over the last 25 is staggering. People will never give them up and why the heck should they?
As mentioned above....for many a car IS an essential part of their lives, and as there are NO reasonable alternatives for millions of people, the car is what they shall continue to use.
Now...........where is me cycle clips and me funny helmet and me go faster cycle shorts. Must admit it does make me laugh when I see those guys going to work. They look like they are competing in the Tour De France fgs. lol
I think the speed limit is not the problem!!
The Problem is lane discipline!!
We lived in Spain for two years where most motorways only have TWO lanes and they have nothing like the problems the UK. Admittedly there is less traffic but pretty much everyone overtakes in the outside lane and as soon as space is available goes back into the inside lane.
In my experience in the UK people just get in the outside lane and then just drive fast or just go along in the middle lane even when the inside lane is empty. Also another small point in Spain learners are taught to drive on motorways unlike in the UK...
Once again its just MY opinion!!

Well.....His BMW would do more than 10mpg thats for sure...
Probably double that and therefore not that much worse than my Saab 900 Turbo and it could be argued that continuing to run an older car is more enviromentaly friendly than some would believe in as much as it negates the need to produce a new one to replace it....
New cars may be greener in their operation but the impact of producing the car in the first place is never factored into the equation....

My other car is 5 yrs old and I have squeezed 94mpg out of it but on average does 55-60mpg....
I win :P

The speed limit is just one of a number of problems and lane discipline is another as you quite rightly state.
The line of thinking of the average British driver seems to be "this is my bit of road, to which I am entitled, having paid my VED" and so, if someone is overtaking, they will not let the overtaker pull in front of them. Similarly, if wishing to overtake, a car behind will speed up to forestall the manoeuvre.
This inevitably results in car drivers hogging the middle or outside lane to "claim their place" - a bit like Germans leaving their towels on the sun loungers I guess :lol2:

That is a big word....
Sorry I haven't replied after posting the thread I've been at work and don't get chance to use the computer.
I understand that the main problem is lane discipline but still 70mph! I'm pretty confident that at least 90% of sh will have broken the limit. As for people just going faster than 90mph if they raise the limit, the simple answer to that would be to come down heavy on those that break this limit and i don't mean points on your licence.
Correct me if i'm wrong but I think most people are willing to break the 70mph limit because they know they can do upto 100mph before they risk losing there licence.
If you look at the statistics of road fatalities of the Uk compared to Germany their isn't much difference.

Before or after statistical weighting?
There are about 60 million people in UK and 82 in Germany, then there are transient drivers "passing through" to consider and, and and.... Not an easy statistic to make any meaning of, I fear.
in the early hours of the night/morning the speed limit on motorways should be unlimted if traffic is light and weather good.
speed limit should be raised to 80 during good daylight.
the A1 in germany is the only part left where you can drive unlimited and the police have lamborginis to catch you in needed.
other areas you can drive fast but the fines are massive.
you can hit over 300 kilometers per hour no problem.

Thats all well and good but when it does go tits up its monumental....
