i have a strong opinion on overweight or fat kids.
My nephew is 15 stone and he is only 14 years old so i feel i can comment on what i am seeing from him and his friends.
technology is partly to blame as well as poor parenting.
technology has enabled children to sit on their backsides playing video games for hours on end and because the internet allows them to communicate with their friends over the gaming systems they are all indoors playing games glued to the tv.
when i was a kid we didnt have mobile phones. the atari console was available in my teens but was too expensive for my parents. as a kid i would go out ride the bike down to my grandparents who lived about 6 miles away, played football on the local teams pitch with about 30 other kids. i didnt even know half of these kids but football bought everyone out on the pitch and you ran your guts out until it was getting dark or you were hungry.
If a child was wanted by a parent they would know where they were and often youd heard an adult shouting 'come home for your dinner'.
we would go shooting air rifles or cap guns in the woods but most play time involved running around like mad.
today parents are frightened of kids disappearing which i understand. kids use to get murdered before i was born and did when i was young so why are we now so fear full that we dont let them out of sight. Technology has opened up new ways the nasty people in society can cause harm to our little angels and as 24 hours news and all the various media channels render parents constantly on edge.
So kids stay in with a coke, pizza and develop a playstation thumb before they develop any social skills.
Families are very different these days and if anything children are becoming seperated from the world because to them the world is swearing online to someone in a another country who is trying to kill you on a virtual battlefield and not getting out into the daylight expressing themselves.
i have been training with the army to help with my fitness for the various events ive entered this year and speaking to the instructors its an eye opener how the people applying to join up are so unfit and without the desire or drive to be better.
its like someone has drained the will out of the young and they want an easier life.
i see this in my nephew. all he wants to do is sit, play video games, shout abuse at people online and eat more pizza.
i had to push him to school as he didnt want to go just sit indoors, play games and expect everyone to fund his diet.
it was only when i stopped his internet that he decided to attend school because he knew i was not going to back down.
But it is not just him you go to the school to speak to the teachers and you see loads of kids that are not just overweight but frankly fat.
when i was at school you had one or two fat kids in a year not 10+ in each class and you knew who these kids were because they were bullied.
those leaving school today have the attitude that i will live with mum and dad until they die as they feed me, provide a roof and i can use dad as a taxi when im a bit older.
They know housing are mostly out of reach and the jobs available will not get them a good wage or chance of saving so they see a life of sitting down doing nothing because there is no point trying and hoping the state will help.
things are too easy these days. im not saying you should have to break your back to live but the class of today have had it all thrown at them so they do not desire or dream of anything.
you cannot boot camp kids or bring back national service because it just wont work. society has changed and your seeing it in easy cash, debt, technology must haves which to kids is all they want.
to me we are too soft and dodge around the problem. There is nothing wrong with calling a kid fat. But parents are just as much to blame for not doing more to get kids into something which will develop them into good individuals.
all the time you are feeling sorry you are avoiding the problem which started the day a parent workout out that they can shut the kids up with a disney dvd, crisps coke and a pizza.
when in fact all they were doing was killing them quietly with technology.

I agree. It is poor parenting and parents lead by example and the kids look up to their parents most of the time!
I don't agree kids should have access to social networking, let them be kids for the limited time they are. We all existed fine before such things came out. I feel kids are wrapped up in cotton wool these days too, when it comes to doing something that may hurt their precious knee for example! Cookery lessons should be made paramount for lessons and so should education on food. Also places that sell fast food should be ridiculously priced, a luxury food for the cheap shite it is. Bring back old fashioned games for kids, hopscotch and skipping ropes!
... only add to this:
all my life I have been a big girl, my heaviest was size 22 and funny enough I never thought I was FAT! lol which obviously I was!!!
as a result of being obese all these years I have had some health problems, just the usual stuff, back problems, high blood pressure, high cholesterol level...
on the I woke up and said to myself this has to stop, I must do something about my weight, need to change my lifestyle...
went down to my local gym, joined and 18 months down the line I'm still a member and still go down 3-4x a week.
having have 2 ops during this 18 months I had to have time off from my exercise, and I was always itching to go back and get going again!
I'm at the moment size 16 ( have to add I was the same weight at age of only 14!!!)
never in a million times I would of thought that I'm going to be enjoying running... and here I'm beginning of December 2013 I reached my target of 5K in one go without stopping. some of you might think that's not a big deal, well it was for me! I'm proud of myself for it.
anyway better shut up and get my gym gear on and get going, my treadmill is waiting for me lol

When in my mid to late 40's I became concerned that I was overweight (I was!) I visited a medical specialist to advise me about recently diagnosed type 2 diabetes.
I was put on a fairly hefty regime and some time later when my excess weight had come off and blood tests confirmed better overall health management, I still thought I was heavier than I should be. The good doctor told me not to be concerned. He asked my what my weight was around my early twenties (much the same as it had become by that consultation) and suggested that was a very good yard stick to work to (he was a military medical advisor), because by then, your body has adjusted itself to your lifestyle and any attempt to take it down much further could itself have more damaging consequences.
Clearly, there are people who are clinically obese and who would benefit from better health management. But that insurance company 'norms' and the eternal pressure on people to conform to statistically weighted (no pun intended) arguments is a nonsense.
We are what we people are naturally 'heavier boned' and more able to carry off more weight. There are others who are also in good health but as thin as a beanstalk not ever putting on weight.
Statistics are all well and good but they can be cumbersome when properly assessing a person's health and well being.
Good luck with your training program

Well done on your achievement smile
I did pilates and jogging / interval training, cross trainer, rowing and weights in my fit years! I swear by pilates, I self taught myself and did it for 10 years..that was until I stopped but slowly getting back into it! Bought myself a pilates performer, it looks like some kind of stretching equipment but the exercises you can do on one - there are so many. Also pilates exercises great for pelvic floor muscles and keeps our bits toned inside. Winner lol.
well done to you and to anyone who does something about a problem whatever the problem.
I do feel I need to re-post my original thread starter though because as I feared some people are taking this thread as a snipe against the larger people which it is not, it is about a serious, life threatening condition.

ORIGINAL POST
No nothing to do with swinging and being large or small in the lifestyle, this is about the severe obesity in the UK 40 stone giants and the like that cost the National Health Service 1 million pounds a year just to move from homes in emergencies or for medical treatment, and cost much more in training for emergency staff, special equipment.
I am just watching a program on Channel 5 about the severely obese, now I doubt if any of these people are in the scene most cannot even leave their bedrooms, is there anything we can do about this expanding (no pun intended) situation, for myself I have no idea what could be done but I am just looking at a specially built ambulance costing £90,000 and a wheeled stretcher that is built to handle 46 stone.
Some of these people have my sympathy, I guess they all have because I doubt many of them choose to be thier weight but I also think about the added burden on the NHS and fire service.
This ambulance and stretcher are based in London, how can we do the same for the rest of the Country at that cost, even if we only try to cater for heavily populated areas, is it fair to have these facilities just for a select few, do we have to tell others to move to London or big cities ?
The very subject itself can invoke a passionate response both positive and negative.
We are talking about 1 million people in England alone who are classed as morbidly obese with an average weight of over 35 stones, the number of people has increased to double the figure in the last 10 years and it is estimated that this number will double again in the next 5 years.
Please, if your on the larger size, this doesn't apply to you, don't get offended, it is about morbidly obese people in the same way we would discuss those with anorexia.
A normal scanner can take 24 stone, there is one available now that can take half a ton but it cost £1 million plus of course the cost of transporting the guy they are showing using it on a 8 hour round trip to use it, as he has a tumour he has to have a scan quite regularly, unfortunately even this scanner is struggling with him and he is in danger of getting stuck in it.
Is there anything that can be done to ease their suffering and ease the burden on the rest of us because it is a burden.
