I'm well aware of the intended purpose of this part of the site ..but I don't think it encourages debate when you state that XXXX is entitled to his/her opinion but that they are wrong or when you list a series of points, ending each one with FACT.....when your "facts" are a load of bollox, or telling people they haven't got a clue.

Gulsonroad, I have no idea as to whether all your facts are bollox, the ones that I took issue with certainly are. I really couldn't be arsed to research them. If you want to know where I got my facts from, go back and look at the link I posted.....you can then google "german population" ....oh and whilst you are it google "industrial revolution".

I was born in London , mum was Scottish ..father welsh...was adopted ..mum was English..dad is Scottish...i was in foster homes in London and Birmingham...when adopted came to Scotland...so for a long time was confused...now I'm British...except when watching rugby..then I'm Scottish....cricket..I'm English...athletics I'm British...football..I'm impartial...guess I'm still a bit confused....
..I'm certainly not a racist tho....

Kenty, What constitutes (the criteria) for someone to be English, Welsh, Scots, Irish, Manx or a Channel Islander. Or indeed American, Chinese, Russian, Austrialian and so on.
I know you asked Kenty for a reply Al, but I would like to add my take upon it.
Your (the royal "Your" here) citizenship declaring whether you are British, American, Chinese etc is decided by the Protectorate under whose passport you hold.
No person can decide whether they are Cornish, Welsh, Irish or Martian by virtue of how they see it! its decided in law for you so no point in arguing this is the same all over the world! The only thing you can say is that "I am of xxxxx descent" where xxxxx = scots, welsh, etc
England is not a governing country, nor is Wales or Scotland or Northern Ireland. Look at your passport if it says United Kingdom of Great Britain on the front then your British.

The football team represents a portion of Britain, it doesn't represent the United Kingdom. Just like Chelsea, West Ham, Man City represent portions of an area.
St. Georges Flag???? what has that got to do with being British? it has no representation except for an adopted saint for England, same as St. Pirrans flag for Cornwall.
As I stated previous the Law is quite clear, the passport that you are granted by a country states clearly which nationality and protectorate you come under. You show me an English passport and I'll accept you are English, until then you are in the eyes of the law and the other 6 billion people in the world British.
Just a thought, Citizens of the member countries of the European Union are also citizens of the union itself, and this is recognised on the passports. They bear both the name of the European Union and of the issuing country.......so shouldn't we all consider ourselves Europeans?

We joined the EEC in the 70's where people held a referendum on it BUT....that was ONLY for trade purposes. Where has it been put in place that we are now Europeans? From France or the Germans? They have always wanted to get one over on the English, but always failed. This is the only wat they could ever have got to the situation of telling us what we can and cannot do.
I am proud to be English, I am not and never will be European. I refused to put a sticker on my bike number plate of the European Union, just to go abroad on. There is a union Jack on it.

It was a very tongue in cheek question, Kenty. I was just taking the English/British debate to it's next logical level.
The State dictates that they decide our nationality and on the last census forms Labours devolution policy was there in black and White (or whatever colour the form was). You see Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have their own parliaments to take more local decisions away from Westminster and allow those regions more of a say in their own affairs. This is all well and good, for them, but we English have no seperate parliament just for English matters, we have to cow tow to a central governmentbwith a Scottish Prime Sinister and with ex IRA bombers in it. Wither ye not though, it was all explained on the census forms, as an entity we don't really exist. We are here to accept whatever the Labour party decide on our behalf because the majority have been stupid enough to elect them. We could have had an early General Election las year, but when it became obvious that Brown would have lost we were told we'd have to wait till 2010, meanwhile he is making sure the ship is even more lost at sea when the next captain takes over. The fact that we have close to 3m unemployed and an open door immigration policy, that the population is set to grow by another 10m over the next few years, that we are losing the best of our youth fighting wars that are none of our business, that the government are pouring the national wealth in it's billions of pounds down the drain and even selling the gold reserves cheaply, and we are to just sit here and read about this every day without reacting! Never mind old boy, stiff upper lip and all that. Here's an idea, lets put Nick Griffin on question time and make everyone worry that the "narzis" are going to take over, that'll keep them off our backs for a while.
The point I'm trying to make here is that this whole bloody mess is down to the Labour government, they have been screwing us since the day they took office back in 1997. It's not so much the British people they don't like, it is the English. Brown is like a city fan that has just been put in charge of united, with the exeption being he can't be sacked as quickly, he will not be happy until we are a none league outfit. Personally I'd love to see Blair and Brown hanged for treason, they have destroyed this country. :0(
