Well.....Ronnie Biggs died today. Part...( although reading the reports..a very small part ) of the Great Train Robbery. At the time the biggest robbery ever known. In todays terms they got away with £40 million !!!
Ronnie Biggs was caught along with others, but with the aid of a rope ladder thrown over the prison wall, he did a bunk !!! He went on the run and was in Australia at first, and then found refuge in Rio in Brazil.
He came back to England and was locked up for a few years.....but then after his second stroke, he was allowed out, basically to die.
So thing is he more than most villians, caught the imagination of the population. Maybe because he was just a working class bloke ; maybe because his escape via a rope ladder was so unbelievable ; maybe because he stuck two fingers up to authority and got away with it ; whatever the reason he became one of the most famous and actually loved crooks of our time.
Now anyone that knows the story of The Great Train Robbery knows it was not victimless, and the train driver has hit with an iron bar, and injured badly, and did never return to work.
So question is...Ronnie Biggs.....Nasty villain or Loveable Rogue
For my part, I know what he did was wrong and all that, but you can't help finding a smile on his face when you hear about him and how he got away with things for so long. He lived a life in Brazil, where people paid to have pictures with him, and as below he even sold his soul for punk, by singing with The Sex Pistols.
R.I.P....Ronnie
Funny (not) how he shafted the Country and it's justice system fleeing to another but when the chips were down, he crawled back (almost literally) to seek succour from the very people he stuck two fingers up to.
Hope he burns in hell.
he was never a villain
his only role in the robbery was to supply a driver for the train, Who couldn't get the train moving anyway
before that he was really was just a petty thief
He was scum working with scum, he robbed a mail train, he fled Britain and lived the high life only returning when his money ran out and he needed looking after by the UK Government.
Now many people these days will not understand the significance of robbing a mail train, back then your wages were not paid into the bank automatically, there was no such thing as e-mails, telephones were not commonplace in homes and mobiles did not exist.
That mail train was carrying job offers for people seeking work, pension payments for OAP's, love letters to people apart, photographs that could never be replaced, birthday cards, job applications, passport applications, legal documents and so much more.
The grief and turmoil caused to business, the public, the government by robbing the mail is immense even now let alone the technology of today.
It is for those reasons that tampering with or stealing the Queens Mail carries (to this day) such high penalties.
The scum that were the gang did not care at what hardship or misery their stealing caused anyone, they did not care if a child, parent or OAP suffered because they did not get the money they desperately needed, if someone lost he chance of employment or could not go on their holiday, if the greetings card never arrived to the addressee, or the important package never arrived, the cheque to pay for something important that is cancelled as a result of non-payment.
Some may defend them as "lovable rogues" not me, never, a thief is a thief a thief that preys on those in need are scum you will not change my mind o that.
No matter how great or small his part in the crime was, he took his share of the money. In my book he was certainly a crook and doesn't deserve the overhyped media attention.
Ronnie Biggs was a thief. I don't vilify him like some may, but I don't hero worship him either.
He lived the high life on his 1/16th share of the spoils from a now infamous robbery, and money he made from his notoriety in later years. He never served his sentence and therefore never repaid the debt he owed to society and he was certainly not rehabilitated.
2.6 million does not sound a lot of money esp considering they split it at least 15 ways, but take into account inflation etc then in todays terms they got away with well over 40 million. biggs wimped out on doing his time.
there has been some controversy and comparing him to nelson mandela, both being criminals etc but in my opinion mandela did his time for his crime and went on to be 1 of the great leaders creating relative peace for his country and leading the way for other dictators.
biggs is a criminal .... end of
villain / criminal for his part in the Robbery, and an escaped Jail bird for the rest who tried to live his days on the run and make money from mhis 'celebrity status'.
Soon crawled back when age and infirmaty started, obviously working out time behind bars a better bet than Brazil as an OAP with little or no money/income/savings.
So from paying little tax or social security (consider his age and early life employment), seems we've looked after him pretty well since his return for basically free.
" Ronnie Biggs was doing time
until he done a bunk
Now he says he's seen the light
and sold his sole to Punk "
RIP Ronnie
his crime certainly does not compare to murdering SCUM who kill an innocent off duty soldier !!!
