Royal Wedding Public Holiday - Good or Bad thing ?

Prince William and Kate Middleton will marry on Friday 29 April at Westminster Abbey, Clarence House has announced.
Prime Minister David Cameron said it would be "a happy and momentous occasion" and would be marked by a public holiday.
Mr Cameron said: "We want to mark the day as one of national celebration, a public holiday will ensure the most people possible will have a chance to celebrate on the day."
The extra holiday will fall in the same week as Easter Monday, giving millions of workers in England, Wales and Northern Irelanda three-day week.
Public holidays are devolved in Scotland and the Scottish government is yet to announce whether it will follow Westminster's lead.
Anti-monarchy group Republic said creating a bank holiday for something "most people are not interested in" was "absurd" and that an extra day off should only be for something everyone could relate to.
So back to the question, having a one off Public Holiday on Friday 29th April, therefore creating a 4 day 'May Day' weekend, a Good thing or a Bad thing ?
As long as I get paid for it, I don't care if it was two monkeys marrying

Being self employ there are no such things as Bank holidays in my world lol
is Public Holiday, like Christmas and Boxing day rather than a Bank Holiday, which is different
Day off - nice.
Royal wedding - not interested.
I have no interest in big frocks, big jewellery or big hair. I'm not one of those who's going to spend hours discussing it with all and sundry as if to somehow connect myself to it. I'm certainly not going to waste what might be a long weekend with decent weather sitting inside and watching 2 strangers get married in front of 500 other strangers (strangers to the bride and groom mostly too). I'll be at my allotment doing something useful with the day.
I don't dislike the two people involved - how could I, we have absolutely no area of commonality. But, while I don't wish them any unhappiness, equally it's nothing to do with me.
The idea of 'celebrating with the happy couple' is ludicrous.

Not in my world, I shall be working on the wedding day wink
its a good thing for me smile
an extra days holiday for which i get paid .... yeah pefect :)
not interested in the wedding tho
Seeing as the taxpayer is footing the bill for the security of the event, nice to be given something back in the form of a public holiday.
A mixed bag and not much to do with the wedding lol Taken purely from the Tweeky book of ME ME ME.
1: Good, Tweeky gets a free day off
2: Bad, Already checked and that Mrs Tweekys weekend in so no chance of a quick book break before the fuckers have a chance to hike the prices
3: Bad, Believe this falls right slap bang in the middle of my 2nd in commands holiday, wont know until tomorrow. We cant be off at the same time and we always like the same holiday dates, makes life awkward. This will save them an extra day with which to fuck up any other holiday plans I have later in the year.
In general though its just a free day off so  from me.
Makes no difference to me of course but if it creates a "feel good" factor and provides an opportunity for people to escape the rat race for a week, it can't be a bad thing.
Good Friday April 22nd, Easter Monday April 25th, Royal wedding day off April 29th, May day bank hol Monday 2nd May.
Bloody Hell, wait ages for a Bank Holiday then 4 come round at once !!
I hope some enterprising swingers clubs have a special do on 29th April !!

It makes no difference to me, as regards a day of work, no work, no pay, but I shall be celebrating the wedding for sure
Of course, it's not going to be much of a joke for the small business as everyone will want to be paid by the middle of April to give them the money to spend over the festivities...

Lucky for us our small business is very small and will not be effected by such things yet, but of coarse there will be many that are
Much as I'd love a free day off, I personally think a national holiday for the wedding is a bad idea. Firstly, a "national heroes day" was turned down partly on the basis that it could cost the UK economy nearly 6 billion pounds

I'm assuming that the wedding will have a similar effect on the economy, and this when us peasants are being told to tighten our belts. The tourist industry is expected to make about 50 million from the day - I doubt whether you or I will be seeing any of this, unless you happen to own a B&B near Whitehall. Also, 6 billion is the amount that some countries need to survive, let alone the NHS, education etc, who could probably do with a few quid chucked their way.
Here are my "austerity measures":-
Hold the wedding at Windsor Castle. Not as much disruption to a major city, nearer to Heathrow for foreign visitors, put a marquee on the lawn for the reception and hire my brother-in-law to do the karaoke and disco.
Televise the event as a "pay for view".
Sell the pics to Hello, OK, or The Beano.
Invite the TA, or regular military to provide security on a voluntary basis.
Kate to wear a bullet-proof vest under her wedding frock, Billy-boy to wear a bullet-proof tux and kevlar y-fronts.
Food provided by McDonalds - 600 Happy meals should be enough.
Oh, it'll be a magical day lol
If this is going to boost tourism, there must be ab awful lot of people not going to get a day off - they'll be serving said tourists. dunno
It is good for me biggrin
I shall be able to have a really long weekend off :D

Exactly this! It's a 4 day week followed by a 4 day weekend followed by a 3 day week followed by a 4 day weekend followed by a 4 day week. In my world, that's nothing but an altogether 'good thing' whichever way you wanna slice'n'dice it? That's looking like a holiday month cos if I'm getting paid for some of 'em, I can juggle a bit of me entitlement and most likely get a full week to ten days out of it somewhere, which is good! smile
The question is, how chuffin' desperate am I gonna wanna be to go back to work by round about day 4 given previous telly coverage of these kinds of national celebration and / or national mourning type events? confused I'm not sure I actually get paid enough to sit through this kind of hour after hour, day in day out, and here's what you may have missed of it yesterday type thing? dunno :?

The question is, are you able to muster the ability to either change the channel, or even do something away from the telly?
Or are you going to be like these people who watch these 'talent' shows, and whinge/moan/rant incessantly if it does not go the way they want it, without realising they don't have to watch it, they aren't forced to.

Now look you! I am forced to watch them, cos Gem insists on putting it on the telly so she can then brag to her friends about I got a bit teary eyed watching the audition stages cos they was only doing it for their dear departed *insert dead relative here* and some such . . . . :uhoh: rolleyes ;)
Anyways, ordinarily when there's nowt on telly, which I'm not a big watcher of as it goes, I'll read a paper, or stick on the radio, or jump on the internets. Somehow I'm not sure as an escapist strategy come next april that's really gonna work? dunno It's gonna be wall to wall royal wedding wherever you look for weeks! lol It is looking more and more like Devon here we come the more I think on it? Lucky to even have telly down where we stay, let alone mobile phones and internets and what have you, cos the modern world stops round about where the A38 starts, which is altogether a good thing. smile
N x x x ;)

Uh-huh, do you really expect me to believe that? Gem is far too sweet to bully you into these things.
