can use iPad for chat, but like lots of Apple devices several issues such as chat not scrolling, viewing cameras/hosting cameras and no emoticons to name a few people have mentioned when using iPads
I just stick with the lappy, you can take it to bed and have it on the duvet between your knees

I have a Kindle Fire, though not the HD model. I got it when Amazon did a £30 off all Kindles deal, and for the price I paid it was ok.
Overall though, I find the way the screens are set up is quite clunky. The keyboard is a tad small, but overall it's a usable tablet. I have used this site on it with no problems, although that was just checking messages, I don't know how it would be for the chat room.
My main complaint about it though is that it loses charge very quickly. Even on stand by with no use at all, the charge is gone within less than 2 days. When using even just for reading, it sucks juice like the proverbial vampire. And Amazon only provide a USB charger not a mains one and it takes 11-13 hours to charge via a USB cable! Fortunately I had an old phone charger that would charge it, but even that took 7-8 hours to charge Fully. Apparently you can buy a power charger but I think that's quite naughty of Amazon. I know this is a very common issue among kindle fire users so if you need something that you will use for several hours at a time, don't buy one.
I have an iPad mini now and since I got that I rarely use the kindle fire, the iPad mini is the same size, lighter and is better in all ways that in the kindle fire, and actually not that much more expensive. Even the kindle app for iPad is nicer to use than kindles own reader!
I use my iPad mini more than any other machine now. I have had no problems accessing the site, though I don't use the chat room, so it could balls up on there for all I know. Seems to be fine otherwise though.
If you want a relatively cheap and light weight tablet, get the iPad mini
I have a Kindle Fire HD and love it, over 450 books and climbing...
It comes with a main charger that charges it in about 80 minutes.
As tablets go its very convenient, very lightweight and I wouldn't be without it.

*Makes plans to steal Rogue's Kindle Fire mains charger*

We dont want to take any of the laptops away with us as they are far to cumbersome and big to cart around and my own laptop is about knackered.
We fancied a tablet to make it easier to take away in the UK and especially when going abroad (we dont wish to have to lug a laptop about on and off water busses in Venice on the way to the hotel smile
We just need to know about chat rooms and fb chat as i use them :)
Thank you for the advice folks smile

I take my laptop away with me
We dont as its way to cumbersome hence we are buying a tablet smile
I have a laptop for home use and a notebook for travelling. However when I'm biking I would prefer not to take my notebook due to space saving and weight, although if I'm routeplanning for my bike satnav, I need to take it! Again, when travelling by air I would prefer to use something like the Fire HD on the plane or airport.
As I already have a normal Kindle, does it use the same charger?

I use my current phone - HTC One to access all. My HTC OneX - upgraded Java - caused issues!
My cheap tablet from Harvey Norman 69 Euro - is fantastic - 10in runs the chat fairly well- although a bit of finger pinching - but that's down to Adobe and Flash!

no problem i have the s4 as a phone lol love samsung
I have an Acer A500 tablet, had it a couple of years, so there is probably a newer model, I have just been in chat using it and can happily type, see messages, scroll and watch guys wank until the cows come home, or I get bored!!!
Mine runs on Android, although I'm not sure which version.
Apple through and through me but for chat on here and most other places the iPad is utter pants and sux big time.
I wouldn't come off Apple for anything but if I was I'd consider the upcoming Google Nexus thingymyjig
Itoots, you are an admirable Apple advocate, and I have my feet firmly in the same camp in regards to my iPhone and iPod.
I would just like to enquire that you think an iPad are superior to the other alternatives. Is it just because they won't work here? (In which case we will get something else smile ) Or is there are hard line technical issue you re on bout
I'm on a iPad now and just been in the chat room
It worked fine, though admitted I only stayed about 30 seconds.
I prefer the iPad to any other tablet I've ever used, I say that because it does everything I want it to.... it's down to resonate preference in the end, I suppose.
Thanks for the replies smile
Think we are going with Saras sugestion, that was my choice anyway just needed to know about chatrooms :) :)

Laptops cumbersome! obviously you don't remember a time when this was the height of portability.

We've had no problems using an ipad in the chatrooms, mostly seems fine, chat appears to scroll and the emoticons are available.
Downside to apple products is the sites IM system doesn't work so we people try and chat to us but don't know until we log the laptop in at a later point.
We don't cam in the chat rooms but would think using a tablet of any type would be difficult for this as you are effectively holding the camera all the time, slightest movement of the pad would have the camera feed moving wildly.
No idea about external cams for iPads but would have thought you could use an external camera on other tablets.
i have an ipad but prefer the laptop, i am a touch typist so the lappy for me personally is much better, my spelling and typing is terrible on the ipad especially with bloody auto correct
