This is interesting. Something to think about...
An Obituary printed in the London Times - Interesting and sadly, rather true.
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
- Why the early bird gets the worm;
- Life isn't always fair;
- and maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining theirunruly children.
It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife,Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.
He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;
I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I'm A Victim
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.
it would be funny if it was`t so true leics :sad:
I think common sense is about personal values and therfore what is common sense to one person isn't necessarily the same for the next. I wish it was but we have to agree to disagree on common sense .
An absolute fantastic piece.
Is it true? Of course it is, apart from those who took part in it's death, who are to blame. For they think common sense is for fools.
The Liberal left should hang their heads in shame and look at themselves and ask..." was it all worth it "? Well of course the death of common sense has been coming for the last 13 years, and I hope that Gordon Brown and his incompetent Government pick up the huge tab for it's funeral.....
Amen....may common sense rest in peace.
We had this on the noticeboard in work a couple of years ago. It certainly prompts debate!
My common sense is alive and well and at the moment it's telling me that there are people in the world who talk utter shite on a fairly regular basis! :mrgreen:

Thanks for such a meaningful thread. I can't add very much to what was said in the opening message.

True in the sense that it was printed in the 'London Times?' The London Times doesn't exist? confused Do they mean 'The Times', in London? Nope . . . not printed there either . . . :? It's probably one of those opinion pieces that aims at a truism, by way of inspiring debate, that then falls down at the very first hurdle? Without researching some of the more obviously dubious statements in it still further, like the ones about painkillers and mouthwash for example, 'common sense' tells me it's wrong from the very first line? :?
The earliest date I've found for this post so far is 1999. I should probably keep digging. It might just turn out that this little chain-letter is even older than New Labour! :shock: :P
Common Sense finally killed itself when it realized that people would forward an email in its name without checking out the facts of incidents they were citing in its name. Its despair was further fueled by the idea that people were attempting to spread its word through forwarded emails instead of by undertaking actual common sense actions to support it. Its distant cousin, research, still languishes in critical condition . . .

N x x x ;)
Neil i want you to be teh father of my children.
I have found the original, an essay published in the Indianapolis Star on 15 March 1998 written by Lori Borgman.

You're ok. It's not Harry Potter that dies in the last book, so there's nothing to worry about brucie. ;) :lol2:
