So far we are not doing as well as we did in the last olympics, a lot of areas where we hoped to get medals where we are not, does anyone think that like me the athletes are perhaps trying too hard in front of thier home crowd, is home advantage actually working against us and high expectations following our best ever results 4 years ago the cause ?
Don't get me wrong I admire very athlete doing it for us and sympathise for those that have not got medals for such hard work and dedication and none have let us down, it is them that worry for not the Nation.
I do agree with the above - the story of 'missed chance' is always heartbreaking, The Cavendish/Wiggins story for example. I feel more sorry for Cav than I am happy for the Wiggo win. Personally, I have loved the Gymnastics today. I was lucky enough to go to the Women's Team Final yesterday. Truly amazing
Thanks to Kate Taylor we've got a Gold, the first in Twenty Years.

The BBC gave great coverage and support, so far imho the Games host Country have done a fantastic job, viewed by billions globally.
Well done Paddy. You never know there a few days left somone other than me might make a comment about a Team GB athlete whilst the games are still on

we have loved the Olympics here and there is so much to take away from it

I am just speechless, awestruck and so, so, so Proud, every single athlete, medal winner or no medal, have not only done us proud but created a heritage that will last a long, long time, even taking away the "home turf factor" they have achieved a standard that other Nations will find awesome not just Britain, they have exceeded the spectacular results of Beijing and they have made massive inroads into areas where in the past we have never been successfull before.
The only reason I haven't commented earlier is because each day they do more and more, I was waiting until the end but what the heck.
Our serious competition, ie similar sized countries with similar backgrounds, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Holland, the Scandinavian countries cannot hold a candle to our results yet again, 12 Golds behind China and 14 behind the USA is wonderuflly ridiculous to contemplate.
Who knows what we will achieve in 4 years time with the inspiration that the athletes have created this year, 2nd or 1st place should be a ridiculous thought, but you know what, I am thinking it.
But don't get me wrong, I did not knock the athletes with my first post I just worried that the home turf factor was actually going to work against us, I now thankfully believe it has helped but I honestly believe it is not the reason we have done better, 48 medals was the target to to beat our excellent Beijing result (which was already amazing) 53 so far and more to come. I believe our athletes have simply done better and would have done almost as good without being on home soil.
very true mids and the best thing of all is we beat those froggys. did you see the horrible french press accusing our athletes of cheating? what sour grapes and yet again they have had to watch the good old UK beat them again, as usual. lol

You really don't like the French do you star? rolleyes
I've seen english complain just as much.... Wasn't it English competitors who deliberately fluffed the start or something like that in the rowing events so they could get another stab at it? Something about lifting their oars to force a restart??? An obscure rule or something like that....

You can compare us to Germany, France, Italy and maybe Spain at a push but the other countries you mention have populations much much smaller than the UK so can not be compared.
You are right though, 2nd or 1st place is a ridiculous thought.

is it that obvious GNV? they are not my cup of tea to be honest, and the french press have constanly moaned about the british at these games. but hardly suprising really when a country much larger than the uk, has never put one over on the old brits. that must really wrangle over a few centuries. lol

have you GNV? funny how you have not seen the french comments when you live in france, but have taken note of the english moaning from figure that one.

not meaning to nit pick HNS, so i wont, but a " few " centuries is what about 3 or possibly 5? ok then 6? 1066 is nearly 10 centuries ago, almost 1000 years and as they say about 1066 " Often erroneously labeled "the last successful invasion of Great Britain", it was in fact the last successful conquest of what is now Great Britain".
one success in a 1000 years......? or a lot of centuries wink
anyway HNS i much prefer recent history. what about The Battle of Agincourt, as a starter? :notes:
I can't find it now star... Mind you, I've not looked very far because, unlike you, I don't have a problem or a need to slag people (or should I say 'peeple'') off like you do when they are French or in my case, english contestants.
It was just a throw away comment. Pas grave.
By the way, you might like to know that France has 3 times the land mass of the UK but essentially the same number of people (sorry, peeple).
That's why it's so nice and quiet here lol

Agincourt was more recent, but if going to quote history, best get it right as it was the last successful invasion afterall..............unless count the commercialism and other cultural invasions

Now then star... Get it right. The place was actually Azincourt.
Only the English would call it Agincourt. Pity though the Brits, they drove the French back through a muddy field but couldn't remember how to spell the name of the pace they did it in rolleyes
Les Anglais peeple can be so overjoyed at winning a battle when behind them, a war is being won
Do you also know the historical significance of Azincourt in respect to English hand gestures?

using my lack of spelling as a poor excuse to make your point GNV, is a pretty poor show even for you. i could make flimsy comments about your profile, but i choose to put my points across without taking the piddle out of the person i am debating with. a poor show for you GNV and to be honest i am rather suprised. and proves you have run out of ideas.

rotflmao:rotflmao:
I've lost count of the number of times you have been reminded of the correct spelling or have read it in these forums. To be honest, the only thing I have run out of is reasons why you would persist in making a simple misspelling. Ah! Simple, that's it :lol2:
Can't think what that has to do with my profile though. Clutching at straws again, star lol

Bit like calling where you live Playstow.
Azincourt - look it up! That is the name of the place where the battle took place. Nothing to do with me living in France, it's just the name of the place where the battle took place.
You know, the name of the place where it took place. Like you live in Plaistow, not Playstow :lol2:
And the persons who live there are called people... Not peeple lol
And I've not lost sight of my roots :fails to contain oneself so has to visit the loo emoticon:
btw star, you haven't answered my cultural question about the famous English hand gesture attributable to Azincourt.....
Maybe tomorrow eh?

no i can answer it now GNV.
From memory just cus I like to butt in smile
The battle of (Whatever) Where the French outnumbered the English 3-1 or thereabout. The battle famous for being won by the English long bow which is in fact false. Scientific tests have shown that the long bow arrows were not capable of penetrating the vastly superior French armour. On the day of the battle the conditions were wet the French attacked into a bottle neck. The weight of their numbers caused a crush and a lot of them simply fell over. The large metal plates of their armour stuck into the clay like mud and they had great difficulty getting back up. The English literally hacked them to death on the floor. At the time previous battles/wars had been fought with or run by nobility. It was customary to take your opponents hostage and hold them for ransom. This time though the English army mostly consisted of peasants who captured the French who expected to be ransomed but the peasants just executed them. The English archers after having fun bouncing arrows off of French men stuck in the mud showed the V sign to the retreating French who had threatened to cut off the bow fingers of any English Long bow men captured.
There or there abouts and that's from memory no Google.
Please, let us not spoil a thread about Olympic athletes (all of them not just the British) who have once again given so much this week and more.
I know "hijacking" threads is a common occurence, I am guily of doing it myself, but let us please take this back to the good and if necessary bad side of the Olympics and not turn it into a history lesson about Britain and France (who didn't even get bronze at Agincourt) lol surely our atheletes deserve better than that.
merci wink

Not sure a smacked bum might be appropriate, I kinda get the feeling you might enjoy that, but suffice to stay no Gold, Silver or Bronze for you ..... giggles.
Now spare a thought for the British Olympians in 2016 in Rio, Such a high standard has been set again by those taking part that our expectations are going to make life very hard for them, we shouldn't expect it, what with the altitude, climate and all those other factors but we are British and we do, thier only saving factor for the new arrivals in the team and for those that will be going into it again after these olympics is that they have gained themselves a lot more recognition, backing, funding and assistance from the Government after thier amazing achievments this time an in Beijing last time.
Now and again Britian steps up and makes the World remember how Great Britain we once were, all too often we talk about our failures in sport, then along comes a good run in the Rugby, a champion in the Tour de France or a great result in the Ashes, but the Olympics have shown the World that our Shopkeepers can be more than just that and that BRITAIN REALLY HAS GOT TALENT.

My profound appologies there is no excuse for neglecting to thank them too, and while I think about it, thanks to the Royal Marines and anyone else who gave thier time paid or unpaid.
