I'm not sure I've ever heard of anyone choosing to switch to Catholicism. .

Tony Blair was a recent high profile convert to Catholicism!

I wonder why he did. Politicians are not known for believing in anything but their own egos. dunno
OK I'm an atheist and wouldn't join a religion if they paid hard cash (I'd fake it for a couple of weeks for the money though) but of all of the options within the Christian church (why are there options - only one can be right?) Catholicism has got to be the most unforgiving, unsupportive, judgemental of the lot. Sounds like a miserable plae to be if you know you are less than perfect (as we all are).
As I understand it the basic premise is "You were born evil, you will burn in hell, you must confess every non-permitted thought to a possible and you will sill burn in hell unless said possible says he has taken your 'sins' away just before you die."

:shock::shock::shock:

So that answered your question.

As an atheist myself with no religious agendas at all, I did not think you was a believer in what the gutter press writes Foxy, and I think your comments are very unfair.
Vicars and Priests etc do a great deal of work for their church and their communities. It is completely unfair to label them all in the category as you describe above. They have given up their lives for their church and their beliefs, and I kinds admire them for that.

The word 'possible' in my post clearly indicates that I do not label all Catholic priests as paedophiles. But there have been far too many instances of the vile creatures coming to light to imagine there won't be any more.
Jimmy Saville did a lot for the community. dunno

There have been a handful of cases against how many Catholic Priests? Of course one vile priest is enough but do you usually tar a whole group on a few bad apples?

Meaning exactly? Priests have been found guilty and convicted of crimes, but as yet there has not been a single charge or a single conviction against Jimmy.
You have used the word possible and I have used the words as yet to base mine on.
more people should resign from positions they hold.
your council tax is going up yet the very same councils sit on millions or throw it away in icelandic banks.
to many mp's, chief constables and so on hang on to jobs after disgraceful behaviour.
chris huhne had to be dragged to court before he went.
id put them in stocks and let the public take turns in flogging them.
The comments about a handfull of priests in a large communtiy of priests is correct, it is wrong to tar a whole group of people.
However it is more than a handfull, it is a percentage that cannot be tolerated and in any other profession much more investigation and security measures would have been put into place.
The unforgivable point though is what the Catholic church did about the situation, priests were protected from high levels, denouncements and cover ups certainly took place, even when the allegations were irrefutable the Catholic church an organisation that should have been the first profession to denounce the practice and rid itself of the scum protected itself from scandal at a cost to more children.
That is the part I cannot stomach.
And so this new Popey geezer.
I think he is either going to shake up the Catholic church and make the changes the 21st Century is well overdue.
OR
He has been chosen because he can be manipulated and a puppet for the established heirarchy of the Vatican War Lords.
Time will tell.
Had a read of this the day after Pope Francis was selected, really interesting read:
The worrying thing is that people are given power and a say in the world stage just because they are leaders of some religious group or other. Why does anyone outside the Catholic Church give a toss what the new fella thinks?
The problem is, of course, is that they can only, must only push their own beliefs on the rest of us. Which is inherently wrong in a secular government or secularly governed society. Religious rules cannot and must not be applied to people who are not members of that specific sect. It's like the thing about keeping shops shut on Sundays. It was never to protect the workers - it was to match the ridiculous and hypocritical rules of the Christian Church. Hypocritical cos their own staff - vicars etc - are the ones working on a Sunday FFS. Protecting the workers only required working days in contracts to be limited to 5 or 6 a week (or out of any given 7) and which days are taken off is agreed with the business.
