I didn't thnk it was possible for the Pope to resign - only to leave the post in death :undecided:
However, breaking news is that he has just announced his resignation as he is too old to do the job.
It seems the last Pope to do so was in the 1400's
He's the same age as The Queen.
Should she resign in sympathy?
She should just resign full stop, let someone else take over. Maybe we could hold a vote / referendum on who should do it...

Why Rogue?
Judging by your above comment and I could be wrong of course, but your not a lover then?
The Queen has done a wonderful job for this country for 60 years, and I would rather she stayed until she died, than to let Charlie the bumbling fool become our Monarch.
Don't bank on any referendum in this country Rogue. We had one in the 70's and that's your lot no matter what that Tory toff Cameron may promise.
You're quite right Star I am not a lover of someone who gets that sort of privilege in life without earning it. Though I recognise a net asset to this country when I see one and long may we have them contributing more than they take out!
But I think she has had her day, Charlie does need a go at the job, even if its for just a couple of years until his lad takes over.
The decision by the British Government to allow gay marriage finished him off. :bounce:
bolt
I have just been listening to the news whilst driving home, so maybe I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me if so. As I understand it the pope is not resigning just because of his age, it is because he lacks strength due to arthritis in his hips, knees and ankles?
Maybe all that goose stepping in jack boots has finally caught up with him
As I understand the doctrine, the new pope is chosen by a group of his mates who pray to their god to give them guidance on who should be the next god's right hand man. In that case, according to their doctrine, god chose him. On that basis, surely, no pope can ever resign. God has a very effective and permanent way of making a pope step down. Or is the current one saying he will chose over his own god? Isn't that saying his god is fallible? That this omnipotent, omniscient, omni-everything god is incapable of choosing a pope to last or even keeping said pope fit enough for the job until he gets kicked upstairs?
Sounds like the resignation shows that the church is making its own decisions not taking its orders from its god - so is that saying they don't believe in their own sky-fairy?
dunno
That's about my take on it too foxy.
Maybe the boss in the sky will make his own vote known before the end of the month?
I'm not religious in any way and don't belong to his club. I don't see why there should be a problem with him resigning, stepping down or whatever you wish to call it. The world for most is an evolving place and I think that even the Catholic Church should evolve with it. It might be the Bastion of faith but that faith has to show compassion as the world changes.....maybe I'm wrong, just my six pennoth!
Not many doing the rounds yet but heard this one;
What sort of job could a newly retired pope take up?
Why, a PAPAL-round of course!!!!!! OMG!

A resignation from the Pope is not something the Catholic Church needs to evolve with. They have resigned before, albeit a long time ago.
I'm sure my mother in law probably remembers it

But I think she has had her day, Charlie does need a go at the job, even if its for just a couple of years until his lad takes over.

And you do not believe that 60 years of dedication to her job is "earning it", for 60 years (and longer working as a Princess) she has worked 7 days a week at being an ambassador of Britain, gruelling schedules, boring dinner parties, endless, garden parties, and thousands of public duties none of which could be classed as fun since protocol rules her every word and movement and invariably it is with strangers and often with people she might personally dislike.
She can never go to the cinema, waterworld, experience shopping in the city centre, go to a nightclub, enjoy swinging, or even go to the beach and let her hair down, she could never do any of the things you have been able to enjoy in your life, true she is wealthy but her wealth does not bring her happiness as what she needs is not just provided but dictated to her by protocol and an army of advisors telling her what she must do.
ever wander round your home naked or in a crappy T shirt n trackie, she can't, ever think, sod it let's stay in tonight and watch a movie or even some porn I don't want to go to the event we planned to visit.
She has to work 24/7 a Queen in front of the world and her staff, ladies in waiting following her every move, personal guard standing close the loo when she goes, no privacy whatsoever.
It is a job I wouldn't want for twice the personal fortune, and you think she deserves your contempt, you think she is worse than the guy in charge of Stafford Hospital where thousands died due to incompetence who never lost a penny and still has a high powered job in the medical world, or the bankers who lost millions of £s in savings, the media moguls who broke laws to monitor telephones yet still get paid millions and all the other examples of people earning a fortune even when they fail at thier jobs, or earning it through the misfortune of others ?
Do you think she is different to any other mother who worries how her sons and daughters will turn out, how her grandchildren will turn out, worrying when her grandchildren go off to war, some mothers worry about thier families taking drugs, she has to worry about them having a bit of fun in a hotel room or choosing the wrong costume for a fancy dress party because the eyes of the world are upon her and them.
Her speaches show she may not suffer the same as some of her people from poverty or redundancy but she understands it, Charles understands nothing of life for the masses, his answer to hunger is simply "get a job" his answer to homelessness is simply "build prettier buildings", he once said to me "this is a very nice room" when I was in a hospital bed, that was all he said.
As for the Pope, not a catholic so don't care and have no respect for a leader of a religion that protects paedophiles, something which they admit they have done and continue to do.
Hooray for Mids. Nice to see you posting again Mids.

Contemptuous? lol no Like I said I do not believe that one should be born in to privilege. You work and earn it.

I really do not care about her or her offspring.

I think I would be letting Charlie have his hands on the family business for a bit. That way she can kick off her sling backs watch Mrs. Brown's Boys
and get ready for the day she shuffles off this mortal coil.

And I believe she earns it everyday but unlike others who earn vast fortunes she does not get to spend it as she may wish, so many successfull business persons are born into privelidge and earn fortunes of thier own as a result, thier families pay for the finest education, set them up in business, sometimes they are successfull sometimes they fail, most that fail still get thier bonuses and pensions, she is by no means unique, she was born into a position that gave her the opportunities but not opportunities I would relish, I think she works harder than high paid entertainers or sportspeople, what is that advert at the moment telling us some actress earns £40 odd thousand a day ? top footballers on £100,000 a week for less hours than the average car worker. The world is full of injustice in earnings, priviledge in power and position but I think she earns her money and because she does her job well she brings a massive amount of revenue into the UK's coffers, a lesser Monarch may not.

I am sure all the mothers worrying about thier kids will appreciate your sentiments especially those with children on the frontline.

When Charles married Diana the world media told us that he would be given a "honeymoon period" then she would step down and give him control, those in the know later said she didn't believe him to be capable of representing this Country in the right manner, his subsequent affair, opinions and gafs have shown that to be true. but you would replace one "born to privelidge" with another ?

Perhaps true in part but many still have a following of believers that cannot be denied so perhaps not past it, I just don't happen to be a follower but accept that many are.
I respect your opinion but cannot agree with you in this instance.
And I cannot help notice that you choose a user name synonymous with people noted for gaining wealth at the illegal expense of others lol

Yeah, I traded in horse flesh, but it seems someone squealed...
As I said Mids, I recognise the net gain they do for our country. WQe dont know how Charlie will turn out due to a bit of hearsay. The monarchy have been pretty good aat being fucked up for the past 1000 years to let anything stop them. Lying, cheating, back stabbing, incestuous...nice family traits...

The only thing that has squealed lately is the pigs being passed of as chicken burgers lol

shush no-ones seen me getting away with that one yet...
Actually I think this Pope is quite smart, he's knows at his age he will find it harder to control the Politics within the Vatican, the powers that be didn't want a young Pope ( someone in their late 50's early 60's ) . Now they may have no choice as public opinion will expect someone younger now, someone with strength to stand upto the influence of the cardinals around him.
Thought they resigned when they popped off to heaven! Do the public in general really have an opinion after all the scandals and the pope covering them up! Im not remotely religious and even I cant understand why you would put your faith in that lot after so many horrid things and all covered up till a big ago.
Id love to have such faith in something but think religions a crutch for weak people to use to escape their world. Never mind its to blame for almost every war known to man.
Ever been to the vatican.. more gold than round MR Ts neck.. wonder how many people could be helped worldwide if they sold it all.
Sounds like a scam to me... I have been known to be cynical and at times incorrect. This time I'm sure though... Call 0845 xxx xxx with your card now and we can pay off another family with it.
Wonder who he hands his resignation in to lol next boss up is the big man upstairs ... must have been caught at a bunga bunga with top man MR Berlusconi ..

But, since the last one to resign was over 600 years ago before the concept of pensions and all since have done the decent thing and died on the job, so to speak, what pension can Ratzinger expect to get and will he still be entitled to some obscure Papal title and accommodation?

Some sort of severance package will be put in to place. No doubt free use of facilities incl. accommodation and lodge.
It was announced that he would retire to a monastery.
Just goes to show when you're officiating at a baby fucking black mass you should be damn sure you can trust the other participants ..... I'm putting a fiver on Berlusconi for next pope

OK ...who`s up for a prediction ? lol
I reckon that within six months the new boy will condone the use of condoms to help reduce the spread of Aids .
Anybody else got any ideas as to how they`re going to try to gain popularity ?

There are certain segments of the Catholic faith that would prefer a more hardline don't like populist viewpoints. So I wouldn't hold out much hope for much in the way of modernisation.
Perhaps the best way to modernise it is to appoint Tony Bliar as the Pope dunno
He has got form, after all.

Why would they be looking for 'popularity'? Since they obviously think they are the only right thinkers where religion is concerned and the rest of the world's population are wrong and will burn in hell. I don't think popular comes into it.
As for the condoms - I'm not sure I've ever heard of anyone choosing to switch to Catholicism. I think breeding their own and brainwashing them from birth is the only way they get new members. Not sure if that is keeping up with the ones who walk away from the cant and hate that is the core of Catholic teaching.
