Gun Laws are a bit like Speeding Laws - they contain the effects of real time risk rather than reduce the cause. If you have two cars hit head on at 30mph, then the results are less bad than if two cars hit head on at 70 mph, but speed limits alone don't stop cars hitting each other.
In the case in Cumbria, if Derrick Bird had been restricted to using an axe or similar, he would probably have taken out 3 or 4 people not 12. The actual CAUSE here was Mr. Bird "snapping" as he was under too much pressure, albeit that he might well have been to blame for part if not much of that pressure himself.
I'm not saying that the gun laws shouldn't be looked at, but I'm against any form of "knee jerk" change rather then a review in conjunction with other people aspects including causation and available councelling offset against advantages of gun use, eg. pest control on farms and the like.

I have been shooting since I was about 7 yrs old and was taught how to use guns responsibly.. I honestly think the UK Gun Laws are ok as they are.
I have my guns locked up in a secure cabinet in the house which was checked by a police officer who IMHO hadn't got a fecking clue what he was looking at or doing.
So if any changes need to be made it is better training for the police officers who have the job of doing the checks for applications and renewals.
Just a shame that the actions of mindless idiots spoil it for everyone.
