the gun laws are so than most countries which let people own firearms with conditions.
At the moment you dont need a license for a air rifle which does not exceed 12 foot pounts or 636 feet per second or a crossbow.
Does that mean it cannot kill? still can kill someone with it but it would have to be at a closer range then you think and a good shot. Also it depends on the target.
And with training the crossbow can be more effective in killing as its silent and does more damage than a pellet.
Currently to get a firearms license to own a higher powered air weapon (fac) you need to prove that you really need to own it.
You must have land to shoot on and a genuine reason for what your shooting land cannot have main roads along side it and your weapons must always be out of view from the public.
At home you cannot keep the ammunition and weapon must be locked away in a gun proof vault/safe. The police check everything including medical reports and any previous convictions.
They also have the right to turn up without warning to check on your firearms and everything connected with the issuing of the FAC.
This is all done by a senior office of great experience.
many of us who have guns are dedicated are ex-military who just like to keep an eye in and shoot at long distance targets for are farm workers who shoot rabbits and other creatures.
Most are members of a gun club so carry out their hobby under strict conditions.
even then some animals you cannot shoot the law is strict on this.
Thing to remember is everyone at some time or another loses their lash out and some humans act differently and when a license is issued that person maybe judged to be fit at the time and then when its renewed in 5 years they may not be.
Life changes quickly and most of the time sudden and it can send the normal kind person over the edge.
You cannot amend laws just because someone flips that is just something that happens.
This time it was a gun next time it could be a knife or baseball bat.
There was a drive by shooting in manchester only this week so people will always get guns if they want them and act dangerously if they wish too.
I know what happened was very sad and difficult to understand for some but by a total ban on firearms people will only purchase them illegally and then the police will not know who has them and cannot check them.
and that will put a lot more people at danger and possible more dangerous weapons being made available.

Plenty to agree with there.
The police blogs are calling for the routine arming of officers.
