I have for the last few years been tracing my family history, I have found some fascinating facts and it made me explore more as I traced one family line back to the early 1800’s and the other line back to the late 1600’s what I found was that I am part of French Huguenots. After tracing the tree and linking up the information it gave me a sense of belonging.
Have you every tried to trace yours?
Are you interesting in knowing where you come from?
Or are you worried you might find something you wish you never had?

Ooh Mixy so am I apparently according to various family members. I am also Romany in part too.
xx
The sum of my parts.
My Mum's into all this geneology and has gone back to the 1500s on her side. So far she's uncovered a famous artist, a smuggler ( straight up! ) but it's all pure Welsh connections so far biggrin

Never tried to trace mine but would love to go as far back as possible and not worried about anything I may find...
i traced one side of my family right back to the 1700's and although it didnt uncover any great secrets or amazing info, it was so interesting to be able to go back so far.
I got bought a trace your family tree cd rom last christmas, and with it was a months free trail of a website that contains all the known census records, births, marriages and deaths records and so on, and you can actually view them on the site.....
I found that a lot of my ancestors, lodged with others and/or had huge families, or were servants/maids. To see the actual records, written in the old script is interesting to.
One of the sad things is to see kids mentioned in one years census and then not to see them by the time the next years census comes round.

just googled and they are offering 14 days free trial (but make sure you cancel your dd when the trials up cos its expensive)
hope this is useful to someone
The family I know about are not good enough to wipe my feet on. I surely don't want to add to that pile of dung. rolleyes
there are two exceptions to the above statement and I know all about them.

I was a memember of this site for a few years when it was a lot cheaper than it is now...I will renew my memembership when the next cenus is released, but a great site to get started, all you need are family memebers names around 1901 and areas they lived. Then you can work through the cenus records birth, marriages and death is how I got started.
There is a guy we know who just lost his Father, his Mother died a while back.
He decided to explore more things about his family and found out his Father had a Brother, and that he had other family members. It worked for him.
My question would be how can a guy of nearly 40 not be told by his Father that he had a Brother, after all those years? dunno
I know they say " nothing quite so strange as folk " but....I would say a lot of times nothing quite as strange as families. lol

Just book a computer at your local library when you want to use it's free from there.
My aunt did a family free for my granparents wedding anniversary a few years back
It started with my son (the only great grandchild and went up to 750? years ago
It threw up a few suprises, One being that my step father and my son are related by blood (share the same grandmother loon)
To quote Popeye or was it Satre
I am what I am.
I'm not sure knowing about your family tree has any relavence to who you are.

I'm quite into family history and have traced both mine and Morb's family trees quite extensively smile
No major surprises or anything exciting on either side though rolleyes
I often think about doing it, but I know the interesting bits of ancestry in my family.
Infact, one of them has been mentioned on here recently!
I found that on my dad's side, one of his relitives was fairly big in the IRA and another served with the Irish gaurds during WW1. That was surreal.
My nan has traced our family tree way way back, I spent alot of my summer holidays as a kid trawling round cemetrys looking for dead folk! loon. Nothing very interesting to report tho. We did have a lady on my grandads side of the family called Loveday-Jayne tho, which I think is lovely.
My daughter has been tracing her family tree back for about 8 yrs now.
I come from Yorkshire originally and moved to Bristol many years ago, she's found that my grandparents met near here (Bristol) and some of the extended family are still around.
My grandmother was an Irish gypsy, who met a Romany traveller who had settled here. My Dad was the last to be born in a caravan.
My great, great, great, aunt & uncles were a drug smugglers confused :? who had the longest trial in Yorkshire history.
My other great granddad was a famous Yorkshire boxer. This part of the family originated from Scotland from a village/house of the same family name.
Also uncovered relatives in Canada, Australia and Europe.
She has gone further back - but heck it all goes over my head sometimes as she lives and breathes it :lol2: :lol2:
I don't even want to be reminded about one side of my family so I wouldn't be interested in tracing them sad
As for the other, yes I would like to go as far back as I could, but I just don't have the time sadly.

My niece has traced our family back hundreds of years. but the interesting parts are all in my lifetime. My father came to |Englaand from Guernsey to get away from the Occupying force there. and he spent the war in the London fire brigade. But my fathers brother was a tank commander for German have a count and BAron in fathers side of the fanmily. (please don't bother to bow Harry) and we have an Italian Countess in Mothers side.
In Yk now we have two Prfessors, One baron One owner of a well known national trucking company and no less than 4 Doctors/Surgons.
Another interesting fact mentioned earlier in this thread. My parents never told me I was a twin and that my Brother died at birth. Didn't know about it till my niece turned it up.
my mums hobby this is :haha:
we found out we had a relative on admiral Nelson's boat Victory and was in the Battle of Trafalgar, he could have been a skivey for all we know at the moment dunno
but really interesting, there was someone else she mentioned but cant remember at the moment

Wish I'd known that a few weeks ago hun, the names of all those on board are on a board outside the vessel....I think the rank is there too.
Actually, a good mate is friends with the curator. PM me a name and next time he sees him, I'll get him to have a word to see what they can dig up.

I'd love to trace my Italian history properly. I know that someone was shot for being one of Mussolini's right-hand men...however terrible his crimes were, I'd like to find out more. My surname is a rare one in Italy. My family also have a very rare genetic mutation which means 50% of us have a rare cancer. I'd love to try and trace this back to see how far back we can prove it goes. Unfortunately, I can't speak Italian and it would need me being fluent and flying to Italy!
