laminate with a nice deep rug easier to clean up spillages...... wine i mean not jizz....... but now i think of it..... smile

Oh and a log burning fire.....ooooh i've come over alll Mr Darcy now.... i must seek out a wench to ravish.....

We have the original wood floors with varnish on them .... hard wearing and look lush and easy to keep clean smile

We prefer carpet - in my opinion, laminate is noisy, cold in winter and just not as homely (in my view).
Personally I would stay away from the deep shag pile though, cos not only is it harder to keep on top of in terms of cleaning, but also I think it looks untidy somehow... just too fluffy. I like the neat lines of a comfortable, warm-under-the-feet fitted carpet.
I also - weirdly - love the smell of new carpet!

laminate with a large fluggy rug me thinks ...wishes i could do the open fire but 2 outta 3 aint bad ..............happy decorating smile

This is what I did to our house about 8 years ago using a floor standing belt sander and then gallons of Ronseal Diamond Varnish...
Looks great and everyone comments, easy to clean...especially if you have pets that shed.
If you have porous floor, i.e. lets through a lot of air from the vent space beneath. You can use the top layer of sawdust that comes off mixed with PVA as a self colour wood filler.
