Depends on what kind of money your wanting to spend as well.
Both places the op said are both lovely.
we're also going end sept and hoping for recommends on hotel - dont mind s/c or b7b -like dining out - looking for on beach and near to resort centre (just want everything !)
We stayed in the Riu Palace Maspalomas (even though it is Playa de Ingles side of resort) the end of May. The hotel was excellent, and a 25 minute yomp to kiosk 4, 10 min walk to Cita center, then another 5 mins got you to the Sandia Center, then another 5-10 mins gets you to the Yumbo, taxi back of course, about 3 euro.
very little going on in maspalomas in the evening, we tend to stay in playa del ingles too, some good hotels euginie victoria was very good lovely spa prices fluctuate like mad though low cost holidays website looks cheap.
we go to gran canaria at least twice a year and have stayed in dozens of hotels far the best all round for value good food and good service is the eugina victoria.
most of the holiday makers are dutch and belgan and are realy up for a laugh.
we are going on the 1st july and it only cost £460 for two of us all inclusive (plus flights)for a week. one small tip if you go all inclusive tip the barman at the begining of the evening you will be amazed at the service you will get, hope this helps.

we are off to Maspalomas in Feb12 and after looking on trip advisor plus the tour operators I settled for the Maspalomas Princess. bit costly but has excellent write ups and it is for our 40th so not skimping.
