A Scam ?????

I am writing this at the risk of being accused of complaining. This is NOT a COMPLAINT - I am trying to point out what I think to be a SCAM! I have noticed that an increasing number of women with whom I have initiated contact with are replying urging me to contact to them through to prove that I am not a "time waster". Fine I have no problem in proving that I am genuine, however, what gets right up my nose is that when you click on the link and the website opens up it immediately attempts to download a dialler, which is charged at premium rates £1 per minute or more! Now I don't mind spending a little money to show a lady a good time, but I do object to lining the pocket of some toe-rag who is just out to rip people off! I would be very interested in the views of others...
If that's not a scam, I have a ten foot penis...
Hopefully your warning will save some people from getting caught. In general, if you contact a woman on this site and she demands you buy extra software or contact her through another website, or in general asks you to spend money to "verify" yourself by anything other than a (non-premium-rate) phone call or buying a webcam (from a reputable dealer), you can bet your bottom it's a scam and there's no real woman looking to meet you. Just report anyone who tries to scam you to the site mods and I'm sure they'll get dealt with with extreme prejudice. :jagsatwork:
 Maybe the extreme prejudice should involve the use of your "ten foot penis" lol
Yup, had a few of these myself.
They go stright in the bin.
And of course you've reported these ads to the moderators haven't you? dunno
Steve
Hmmm.... seems that it was not just me being a bit paranoid...
Thanks folks for restoring my faith....
Agree with steveg_nw you should report all these "women" to the mods and get them thrown off the site pronto!!
I'm sure there may be some folks, unlike yourself, who will go through with spending the cash in the hope of getting a meet or more when there's bugger all chance of this happening.
Once upon a time, when I was on AdultFriendFinder, I got a reply from a woman inviting me to contact her through her website. I went there and you needed to buy AdultCheck to access it; as it happens I did have an AdultCheck ID already so I figured I'd type it in and see what was what. Well, what was what was an email address, which I tried and didn't work.
Is beginning to look like a pretty big can of worms to me...

No, because the problem is you send email to ads through the system on here (at least all the scam ones I've got back cannot be tied to an email I've sent myself). So the scam response you get back can't always be tied to an ad number.

Agreed, the problem I have had is tying the response to an ad number! Short of keeping a log of ad number etc to every initial contact and tying that to responses... What a lot of troouble that would be!!!!!

Well, if you're going to complain openly then why not take the time to create a log so that we CAN deal with it - otherwise the whole thread is pointless. We would love to ban them but all we ever get is the mail from those people and not to them so we have no idea and can do nothing.
Help keep this site responsible and clean and take a note of what ads you reply to and when so that we can narrow it down and zap them. If you don't help us we can't help you!
As I pointed out in my original post, this is not a complaint but more of a warning to make people aware that this scam is operating...
I think that most of us have far better things to do with our time than logging our email activities... I certainly know that I have.

Then you SHOULD be complaining - I would if some person was trying to download a premium dialler on my PC and scamming me!! If you have better things to do than log your email in order to protect your PC but then take the time to post your thread - then I just wonder... I stand in my shoes and I wonder.
sad
Maybe I'm odd, but I did used to keep a record of the ads I'd responded to, so I knew I wouldn't respond to the same ad twice.
Maybe I am odd. dunno

Even if you are odd you are at least wise and odd!!
lol
OK so you want a complaint - I did a little looking and came up with at least 1 of the offending ads:-
Ad No. 166062

I really didn't have the time to do this, but we can't have you standing in your shoes and wondering now can we?
Well Halyard
I didn't really want to spend the time or the effort checking out the ad you complained about, but I thought I would make time and use a smidgen of effort to try and help EVERYONE who uses the ads. Didn't have to, but I thought it would be nice to put something back into the Site rather than take, take, take and complain about this free website.
So I have deleted the ad and banned the user, so that the person will come back to us and ask why. We can then spend a bit more of our time and another smidgen of effort to decide whether they are telling the truth or not.
And just for the record, everything on this Site is free and the time and effort put in by the Moderators is also free. We also use something called 'Moderators discretion' which means that if someone doesn't actually break any rules, but they really piss us off, we can deactivate them - if we can be bothered, that is.
I hope you enjoy browsing freely through the ads and I'm sure that, should you come across any more dodgy ads, you will take the time to inform us.
Have a nice day.

Thanks for the effort Mal, now perhaps I can get my paper finished for a conference next week....

What?
The potential scam was weighing so heavily on your mind you were unable to finish a paper..???
Unless of course you are refering to the crossword in the News of the World - which can be a right bugger sometimes....!! wink

Well the paper is finished, what was weighing on my mind more than some toe-rag ripping people off was whether or not there was any such thing as the aesthetic.
After thinking long, hard and deep about it I come to the conclusion that this site has a great deal of the aestheic about it and want to keep it that way. And if that means keeping the undesirables at bay then I think it worth while to give it my undivided attention.
However, if there was a more interesting problem, like a gorgeous lady wanting attention, then this would never have come to light.
Hope that sorts out what was weighing on my mind. Btw, it was 2kg!

Me too - in fact I pride myself on the amount of ads I report.
If there was a leader board for successful reports of 'improper ads' I can safely say that I would be in the top 1000!!

Amen to that.

Treading on very dangerous toes here mate - be warned!

PLEASE BE AWARE
I recently had one of these dialers download onto my PC and ended up with a £760 phone bill from BT .... This was within a few days .... YES you ARE liable for repaying it.
Please check your Dialup Networking OFTEN and try downloading something like AdAware (if you haven't already).

I might be treading on 'dangerous toes' but as a Professor of Law I am quite prepared for the consequences and to defend myself; thanks for thr warning but it was unnecessary.

What on earth has being a professor of law have to do with knowing consequences, or defending yourself on here?! rotflmao
