I have been waiting for someone else to put this thread up (being the coward that I am) but as nobody else has, here goes:-
Must own up to being a viewer, at least over part of the period that it has run. There have been extra hours and extra drama (ever thus) over the past few days to mark the anniversary.
I feel that it is not a bad thing that this soap is multi-cultural, multi-lifestyle, compared to the other soaps which run on the commercial stations that appear to be pro-white from what little I have seen of them, but I do think they go a bit too far at times with the issues they cover, in particular the number of murders and may stop watching after the current excitement is over.
Any additional views out there?
PS. If the Mods wish to move this to Current Affairs, I would have no objection, just I think more people look at the Cafe and the issues I raise are of wide interest)

I now watch it begrudgingly as Mrs Tweeky still likes to watch it. Ive been put off ever since they killed of Dirty Den, in my eyes you dont kill of your legends they are always better left placed to return.
I have issues now with the sensational story lines and story lines that are just written to be bloody depressing. Take for example the whole Danielle story. That did nothing for me at all its designed to simply upset people. Eastends was never the happiest soap but balance has gone way to far now about just depressing the life out of everyone.
Eastends still deals with current gritty topical issues but does not do it as well as it used to IMHO. The balance to depressing story lines and sensationalism is now to over done and makes it a program that does not in any way enhance my day.
30 minutes of complete bollox!!!!

I lost interest when Arthur had his breakdown. Since then the storylines have been nothing but misery, fear, broken hopes and murder. Plotlines that make no sense, characters than randomly change from scary local hard-man to cuddly pseudo scary comic relief. A murder rate that outstrips the worst inner-city hellhole. Characters leave as one actor and come back as a completely different person.
The only way out for the actors is to move to X-jungle-celebrity-dog-walking-on-ice-with-the-stars.
Which is the same for all the soaps. Eastenders is no worse or better than the rest.
sorry have better things to do with my time...... nudge nudge wink wink wink

Sorry but I do not agree and some may well see that as racist in itself but...moving on to the subject at hand.
Mrs777 watches this soap but I only tend to watch it in the background when I am on the computer. What I would say I do not like on any of the soaps is the sensationalism they deliberately set out to achieve.
Some of the story lines should no way be shown at , a lot of it is adult content, but they get away with what they can.
Over the years it has been a good soap with some great story lines, but what I find is that this particular soap, is more depressing than ever. When I watch it I very rarely see people laugh...it all seems doom and gloom.
I like Corrie, have watched it for years, and the level of it's success is in the ammount of years it has been going, and still how so many people watch it.
But 25 years is an achievement in itself, and hats off to them.

I still remember watching the first episode and how different it seemed to cosy coronation was for the first few years unmissable .Soon tho the misery started to become repetitive and once we returned tothe country i felt no urge to catch up,
Now the only soap i follow is the 15 minute of bliss at 7 on radio Archers seems to be the only soap which doesnt wish to leave its fans suicidal, and i defy any other to produce as moving a piece of drama as phil archers death.

I listen to the Archers too. Phil Archer's death was very well done, but of course they had to do it as the actor had died. One interesting thing about radio soaps to my mind, the actors themselves often don't match the voices if you actually see news pictures of them.

Oh dear, it's a sad day if you cannot talk about how TVs companies deal with race issues. The BBC, who run the Eastenders on Taxpayers money, clearly promote good relations between the characters of different races. I think that is OK, except that sometimes the reltionships come accross to me as being unnatural, which might have the opposite effect with some viewers. I only see other soaps on the commercial stations very briefly when I flick over to see what's on or trailers come up - I can't recall seeing a non-white face on these, although I'm sure that there must be if I watched them serriously.

i know what you mean, they have Ian and Adams wedding on the official website and they just look nothing like they should lol And on the topic of the Archers you say that you like enders cos its multi cultural but the Archers to me has the less sterotypical and Adam are the only gay couple who seem in any way realistic i have ever seen on a soap.
Yes, very good point re the gay couple - on the multi-cultural front, the Archers is more like the commercial station TV soaps, in so far as it is made up of almost all white characters - believe it or not, I knew someone who had actually stopped listening out of principle when Oocha Gumpta (sorry the spelling is probably wrong) was introduced.

*coughs* Coronation Street! *coughs* :P
I can think of few things more soul destroying than sitting down to me tea with a load of miserable, cockerney stereotypes. lol ;) Yeah, fair enough, they had that Michael Cashman on there back in the day, and they had that AIDS story line with him out of Grange Hill, which I suppose was quite relevant at the time, but we're talking twenty years ago? Has the world ever known such a humourless place since as Albert Square. dunno confused Coronation Street must be every bit as deprived, and even more working class and insular, but at least there's some proper northern wit to it.
I blubbed when Vera died in Jack's arms. sad redface I can't think of a single character in Eastenders I wouldn't be happy to see run over by a bus / taxi / murdered out back the Vic / crushed by a plane falling in flames from the sky / insert original storyline here . . . .

Yes 150% annoying. Think Minty was the worst example of that. He started as a drunk ruff and gruff landlord who chucked Laura I think it was out of her flat even though she was pregnant cus she was short on the rent. He was also portrayed as Phils old rough and tough friend from school days. When Phil got in trouble with Gangsters he went to Minty for help.
In contrast Minty is now fat happy pie eating West ham fan with a nice sense of humor. He is generally very polite a total wimp and cry's a lot.
Its just fookin stoopid!
Does anyone really give a stuff???????????????
How many people on this site at least live their lives in a state of constant argument and antagonism shouting at eachother most of the time? Most soaps seem to be like this in the mercifully few minutes of trailers that we have to endure!
If today's children are watching this crap they will grow up thinking that it is normal to have all these arguments and often violence within the home 'because they saw it on EE or whatever'. We are glad we did not allow our daughter to watch soaps during her more formative years. Too many people are hooked on agression and mild violence!
Off my soapbox now.

Stopped watching Eastenders regulary, years ago...too much doom and gloom, unbelievible story lines, awful acting and definately an unrealistic view of the east end of london.I can understand why it is so popular however but not because of how gritty and realistic it is, its because its so awful it makes for funny and entertaining viewing.

You obviously don't frequent the current affairs forum wink
:laughabove::laughabove::laughabove:
I have said this before, but soaps like eastenders and corrie simply show what happens to people who eat cafe food and drink unbranded alcoholic beverages. The effects on liver functions arouse heightened forms of behaviour and mood swings; from unrealistic highs to depressing lows. The majority of the actors don't look dramatic they simply look very unwell, most of the time.
They don't drink real drinks...it is all make believe ya know. wink

Agreed about Minty - as I remember, his first appearance was as the "heavy" manager of a rough bedsit type accomodation place and he protected Sam whilst Phil was in prison. Then he took over running a pool hall. Few episodes later, he was a fully skilled motor mechanic working in the Arches and became one of the "good guys".
The producers of these soaps must have a low opinion of the viewers if they expect us to forget things like that!

When my girlfriend fell down the stairs I thought Eastenders had finished!!! :giggle:
My one Eastenders joke...
What got the entire cast of Eastenders thrown out of the Queen Vic pub?
It was happy hour.
