A boxing ring what do you think?

This idea came to me in the bath this morning! :rascal:
Could we have a SH boxing ring? duel

The boxing ring, enter at your own risk! smile

I thought a room in the chat room where you invite someone in to fight his or her corner, after a personal attack has been made in the forum against you. :sparring: If they don’t go you know you have won the fight! :thumbup: Thus taking it out of the forums leaving them open for others to comment on the thread without the need for threads to be locked. sad

Some threads have been locked not because of the content that was originally said, but because of the personal insults flying about. If these were removed others could get on with debating on the subject raised.
All spectators that like to see a good battle would know where to go to watch, they could comment A is in the corner B is digging a hole will B fall in with a left hook from A etc etc. But beware spectators you could be the next in the ring to battle the winner. You could have a OP in there ringing the bell for the next round. lol

We could have a score board one point for a win, a win being awarded when a person leaves the room make sure the kids are not about before entering the ring!

Superb suggestion! I'm certain everyone would benefit from this idea. Threads would not be bogged down by bickering, mods would not need to spend time advising when things were overstepping the mark or locking threads, those who hate argument wouldn't have to put up with it while those who appreciate a battle of words could spectate:-) It would vent frustrations for the participants and hopefully enable them to move on. Some may even learn something from it, if only the futility of arguing with those who ignore fact and reality.
Great idea but of course it'll never happen:-(

I do not think it is a good idea!
Listen...we are all adults here, or supposed to be. If people want to argue the toss over things then where is the problem? As long as there are lines drawn. Trouble is people overstep that line all the time. Maybe I am one of those people on occasions.
Some of the topics of late have been very deep and people like myself hold strong views on them. If you hold strong views and somebody else has the opposite views that will always lead to arguements of sorts. It is whether those arguements get out of order is where the problem lies. I love a good arguement but I wont enter into a deliberate slanging match on the forums, but I feel that if your suggestion was taken on board minx, that is exactly what it would turn into.
Lively debate is acceptable and encouraged but...there have to guidelines as to where people can go with their arguements. :lol: I feel on this occasion bilko was right to lock the thread as obviously the last couple of comments were starting to get very heated, and overtones of unpleasentness!

I do see your point but there are two kinds of 'argument'. Those about opinions, where no one is right or wrong except in how they believe things are or should be, and over fact, where only one can be right.
I'll discuss, debate, and argue about opinions and, like you, may put my opinion strongly, but as long as the other person doesn't make it personal I won't either. I know I should take that further and just drop out of the argument if they do make it personal, and usually I do, but occasionally I cock up and respond in kind.
When it's a matter of fact rather than opinion however, I seem less able to just let it drop. It should be easier if anything, because to me it's obvious, but for some reason I often just can't let it go. Note to self: be more logical! biggrin

Arguments/debates and fights/rows are two different things.
The problem occurs when people make it personal. Most of what I read on here isnt personal but people may perceive it to be so which is their own personal judgement call.
No I dont think a boxing ring idea would work - I enjoy the debates and often get saddened when it ends up that toys are thrown out of the pram as the debate then concludes badly.
I do like the idea of some threads having only an infinite time however to run on more sensitive topics with maybe a moderator being in the thread to keep it 'safe'.
However, like most things in life, you only get out what you put in and as I rarely post these days - lol

Like I said in another thread, I still enjoy reading the forum when the banter rises - the I luv you babes answers are never as interesting to read wink

No, I don't think it's a good idea. Many who use the forum, do so because the pace is slower and they like that. Saying that if they don't go in, you've won the argument, is just silly. That's like kids having to have the last word and if they don't turn up for a fight, they're a coward. confused

damn that is where I have been going wrong. I presumed that if someone didn't reply to my posts directly I had won ? Oh my word I am really going to have to rethink the whole 'posting on the forum' malarkey.

I dont think its a good idea either, debate may happen in a thread, and points of view will differ, and yes, maybe sometimes descend into bickering, but to have a thread solely for a 'fight' smacks of schoolyard antics.
If i was 'called out' for a fight, (and god, i would hope that i never upset anyone ever, that they felt they needed to do that) TBH I wouldnt lower myself to enter the 'fight' but it wouldnt make me a coward, just someone making a choice not to.

Perhaps a more workable alternative could be a 'Sin Bin'.
Its usually obvious when people come off the debate and start having a go. They should then be binned for a period and kept out of the debate until they are ready to get back on the subject.
Why should the few who argue spoil a decent thread for those who don't?

I think the Steam Room is quite sufficient. Anything else would be tantamount to encouraging the fighting.
Moreover, occasionally when fights break out, they get resolved in the same thread. When that happens, it's quite heartwarming. Isn't it Steve? wink
