I can't say that im speaking from experience but it may help newcomers to feel more welcome ....
When I joined SH I kinda barged my way in and had all kinds of sarcasm and humour thrown at me that I didnt understand...
First thought "oh my god what am I doing wrong...am never gonna fit in here" kept falling over myself and bumbled along regardless.
But hey guys dont give up ... dib - dib - dib .... dob - dob- dob- keep at it and if you have the gumption youl come through...
Keep at it -- youl develop a hard skin and realised it is not a closed shop...it is a very welcoming...open friendly site for all..
Y - know it really pisses me off when I see all you regulars take the piss out of newcomers...

Im with you here but it has always gone on, and im afraid will continue to do so.
I think the light hearted banter/piss taking is not too bad, but alot of it is:
IMHO bullying and intimidating newbies.
I used to post on these bullyboy threads but soon realised it was pointless. What i tend to do now is pm the "victim" offering advice and some encouragement etc.

I do get the ligh-hearted banter bit but i've seen some pretty hurtfull things being said. OK if your used to it and know the humour fine but iI feel that the when new people arrive..its like being thrown to the sharks...
maybe there should be an intergration section for them because it is nervewracking enough to join the site - for genuine people who have just realised what they want and who are feeling their way - they are very vulnerable and dont understand the humour. It is a very big step for a lot of people..

rarely is anything really nasty.... though when a "newbie" comes in and is obviously trolling for responses, then i think members here have a very good bullshit detector and will give them short shrift. which is right. Best advice i can give to a newbie is take it easy at first and get the measure of the place... if you bugger up, it isn't te end of the world, and you'll still be welcome here as long as you don't start coming over as a know it all pillock... just like real life really.

There's always the mentoring scheme, which is stickied. If people bothered to read down the list of threads, they might see that and wonder if it might help them. To be honest, I don't think nerve-wracking is a good description of some of the newbies because they're just so brash it beggars belief. They tend to be the ones who ignore any help/advice, have the urine extracted and get mardy. It's rarely malicious, the piss-taking.
