Dunno what you are wanting to know. Its tends to affect elderly and women (though can affect the general population too). Can have afew causes which need to be investigated. Can't really make many comments as some causes can be quite serious. Do you know what the underlying cause is?
But if you want to avoid B12 deficiency:
- Eat a varied diet. e.g liver, fish and eggs.
- Vitamin B12 is only found in food of animal origin, if your a strict vegetarian then consider taking vitamin B12 supplements.
only thing I know is what I have read up on it, did it years ago when the ex went thru iron deficiency during pregnancy
This brief on the subject gives some clear and simple information tho

well i have low intrinsic factor and am on b12 injections.......... but its all the side effects i dont understand. The dr tells me it doesnt effect my gums....... the dentist said they couldnt treat it until the injections had kicked in and the nurse today said the dentist can treat it as it is a symptom and i should go to them asap.

Yep, the intrinsic factor deficiency is the cause in the majority of the cases in the U.K.
I can understand your frustration, being given different messages from the HC professionals, it tends to make you doubt whether you're being treated correctly.. I think the dentist might have got it wrong. Go and see him and tell himwhat the Dr and nurse said.
Hi,
Yes, i have it too and have b12 injections every 3 months, what side effects do you mean?- if you want to pm me to tell me please do i may be able to shed some light on any symtoms
Don't ya just love the smell (and colour) of your pee after those B12s  confused
I have had B12 injections, for another problem, and they were wonderful!! Gave me so much more energy and put me on a real high!!
If you can get the injections do so!!
I have these injections too & also iron tablets but they don't seem to make a difference. Docs don't explain nothing so any help would be great, thanks!

I have had them for over 2 years, also awaiting hospital appointment for more blood tests. I sometimes just wish for 1 day I could get out of bed & have a day where I can do anything I want & not feel shit for it afterwards. sad

Its the injections that do it, and they arent available at the health food store, if they were id have bought them in bulk.
According to my GP the injections change hands on the black market for quiet a good sum!!

I gather it doesn't smell like sugar puffs?
Vitamin B12 is neccessary for the bone marrow to produce adequate blood cells.
Intrinsic factor is produced in the gut to help absorb vitamin B12.
No intrinisic factor, No Absorbtion of dietry Vit B12 hence reduced production of Blood cells, onset of aneamia, tiredness because the blood cant transport enough oxygen.
Solution Give Vitamin B12 as an injection into muscle that lasts for about 3 months.
If Vit B12 gave you loads of energy then maybe you like needles into your buttocks wink or you were slightly aneamic anyway and it sorted the problem.
Hope that this answers some of the questions

Nah, I think your G.P was pulling your leg. If people wanted to get a high illegally, they'd go for stronger stuff. The injection is only given to overcome problems with G.I absorption (intrinsic factor deficiency). But still the active ingredient Vit. B12 is the same.
The reason you may feel on a high is that your used to lower oxygen levels, the B12 only takes you to what you would be like if you weren't anaemic. So for someone who is "normal" there wouldn't be any additional benefits in taking supplements (orally or i.m)

My GP dosnt have a sense of humour!! You may be right about the oxygen levlesl, but i wasnt given these injections for my blood disorder, but for eyesight problems and by a specialist.

It doesn't acually matter, if you have a deficiency in intrinsic factor for B12 absorption, then it would need to be given in a non-oral way i.e via I.M (though you'd probably like abit of oral too biggrin ).
But what you get in the I.M will contain the same active ingredient- B12. Chances are you did experience some benefit in terms of oxygen too.

You have my sympathies ... I'm anaemic generally (low haemoglobin) and I'm allergic to Iron (FFS!) so can't have supplements or anything fortified.
Hope you get sorted soon ... have you seen a dietician?
