has anyone else had them ring up?
ive just had a call from a guy who rang back twice because i hung up on him, which part of NO didnt he seem to get.
does anyone know how to stop the perstering gits ringing, especially during meal times.
Depends what ther are calling, your home phone or your mobile.
If its your home phone BT have recently satarted a secrecy / privacy service where you can ban certan incoming calls.
As for mobile service providers, I have no idea, but a google on nuisance calls might help.

Register your mobile, or any other phone with the telephone preference service here -

That should put a stop to unwanted cold calls, although it does take up to 28 days to take effect.

I rarely ever get a call, had about 2 in the last two years...
Register with , works for mobiles and landline. From what I can recall of an article on PM (afternoon news programme on Radio 4) all BT does is registers you with the TPS anyway!
FWIW you can also register fax and your home address with the F(ax)PS and M(ail)PS at the same site to cut down on unsolicited mail and faxes.
The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) helps you to make sure your telephone number is no longer available to organisations, including charities and voluntary organisations who may telephone you with offers and information you do not wish to receive
Under Government legislation introduced on 1st May 1999 and replaced on 11th December 2003 by the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003, it is unlawful to make unsolicited direct marketing calls to individuals who have indicated that they do not want to receive such calls.

What you do is when they say 'Is this mr/mrs ****?' Say, no but just hang on . I'll get him/her.
Then put the receiver down beside the phone, and go watch TV.
I'm getting really sick of one-tel at the moment......even the shouting down the phone to fuck off doesn't seem to work!! mad
Will try to get through to BT tomorrow again about this privacy thing !!

Yes it does stop these messages too. That's how I found out about them in the first place (TPS), because I posted on here about getting unsolicited text messages, which I had to pay to receive!!!
Someone pointed me in the direction of TPS (think it may have been meat2pleaseyou kiss ) and I've not had any more since smile

Great idea!!!!
But seriously - we had a great adventure  with company offering cheaper calls than BT. During a first call we asked JUST for details - so the nice guy (with strong foreign accent) said: no problem and sent us a letter confirming agreement  so we (or i should rather write: my husband) called them to cancel the agreement and asked them "don't call us again, please". After a while we had next 2 or three calls from the same company, but more: the same guy was calling! (and I bet - reading the usual formula from his help-sheet, cause we could't even stop him! ). When he called the last time, after a few: no thanks, I'm 100% sure I don't want it, I'm not interested ( it all seemed to be too difficult to understand for him), finally he's heard: just $%^&*&% mate! We know it wasn't polite in any way biggrin but who could stand him for a minute more! Jesus!!!!!!! After this it's soooo quiet - no more calls from them

Good advice. I did this just over 2 months ago and all calls seem to have stopped. The MPS works too.
Worth doing if you get a lot of annoying calls.
biggrin
Registering with the TPS worked for me too - sales calls have stopped altogether. Don't know why I waited so long to do it - do it now! biggrin
... an offer to register your number with the telephone preference service! Better to do it yourself ;-) And don't forget the fax preference service while you're at it!
Just thought I would drop you all a little bit of information of this subject.
As some one that has set up a call centre in India (don't do it any more so please don't kill me or turn me in to an ex-member!) I know a lot of how all this works.
Registering your number with the TPS is the best way of making sure the calls stop BUT there is a little loop hole in this - by law a UK company that has any sales and marketing function has to use the TPS, MPS, FPS and EPS to make sure that they aren't contacting people that are registered on it. When it comes to people making calls on behalf of UK companies but are calling from outside of the UK they don't have to do this - bit of a loop hole. If you ask them on the phone to take you off their call list then they have to - no matter what - I know that trying to get some of them to understand it is the difficult bit but a few harsh words should do the trick on that - always take the persons name - both the one they use on the phone and REAL name and also there caller ID as they will have one ,to log their sales activity. If at the calls don't stop you can write to then and say if they don't stop you will take them to court over unsolicited calls - and yes you can do it I know people and companies that have won over £5k in court over it.
Hope that helps any one.
added myself yesterday!
thanks for the advice all.
