I recently installed a Sygate firewall which I thought was working ok. However, I noticed that it is not allowing me to access "live update" which I need for my Norton Antivirus protection. I have tried looking at the Symantec Technical Support which says I need to get Sygate to allow access but I can't seem to work it out. What I am wondering is, would it be easier if I ditch the Sygate firewall and get the Norton one which would be compatible. Thanks peeps in advance xxx

I have no opinion on which might be better for your needs.
I would suggest that doing as you suggest would certainly be easiest, and less trouble-free long term... but maybe that's exactly what Norton wants you to do (which might give Symantec (Norton) an incentive to lead you up the garden path. Probably an unfair suggestion, but marketing can be cut-throat sad )
If you want to give the current product another try, I'd suggest contacting their tech support and explaining the problem. If they can't help you then ditching their product seems like a no-brainer.
Hi!
May i suggest scrapping the two of them?
We had Norton Anti virus and norton firewall for 2 days (was installed by pros btw) and we ended up with 196 viruses on the pc. We now Panda Titanium Anti Virus and it is excellent.
Hope this helps

I'd like to second naughty on this. Panda is a good program and well worth the money.
I managed to get an OEM copy of Panda Platinum Security suite from for just over a tenner. Damn sight cheaper than renewing the license every year... lol

I highly recomend a Combination of Mcafee AV and Sygate Firewall.
When and If installing Mcafee, you need to select custom install to de select mcafee's own fire wall if you intend to install Sygate. Or the two will conflict.
Hope that helps a little.
I have used this combo for 2 years and always return to them time after time. I recomend them to all my customers.
Dont get me wrong, Nortan is good, but a memory eater, Mcafee is average, But panda is better. In my humble oppinion anyway.
cool
If you have Windows XP , service pack 2 the firewall conflicts with McAfee and Norton .
I am using window XP (home) firewall and just McAfee Virus Scan and have had no problems yet .. ??
Hope that helps

I'm currently running Sygate firewall and AVG Anti-Virus on Windows XP (SP1) and everything seems to work ok. You can get a free version of .

We use XP Service Pack 2 (with the firewall turned off!) and have ZoneAlarm as a firewall. As for anti-virus, try the free AntiVir ( ) - never failed us yet.

In Sygate, go to Tools -> Applications. You should getm a list of the various apps. Somewhere in there is one called LSU I think, which from what I remember is part of the Live Update package. Right click on it and select Allow.
Also worth trying to run Live Update, with the Sygate control open, and see what appears. Quite often an icon will turn up with a question mark or red circle, once again, selet it and choose allow.
Sygate is annoying to configure, but it's also very good, and very free smile

Thanks for all your tips guys. I went to the technical support of sygate and was told that I still had zone alarm running, which was causing a conflict - I have uninstalled zone alarm now and everything is running tickety boo! (fingers crossed).
