Hi Everyone,
This is partly a test, partly me de-lurking, but mostly me saying hello and introducing myself. I've been lurking for a month or two and a few things have happened to make me want to come out and say hello.
One is the general positive, friendly and helpful nature of the site, another is that there seems to have been quite a few new people de-lurking as well. But the main thing is what happened last weekend. Girlfriend and I have been dipping our toes in the water, so to speak, for some time. But suddenly on Saturday night I found that I was grabbed and pulled completely underwater.
Maybe I'll tell you the gory details one day, but my first question is this. Is there a North/South divide? Am I right in thinking most posters are in the Midlands or the North? How much is going on in the South, particularly the South West.
Red Baron
Hi and welcome. I for one am aware that there must be so many lurkers out there reading what all us insane folks write about (and having a good laugh at our expense, most probably wink ) so it's really good when someone de-lurks. What we need is a Star Trek-like de-lurking device, so we know exactly who is out there  But I digress...
North-South divide? Hmm, well, there are lots of people on here from the North and mid-England, and a few from Scotland and Wales, but there are plenty from the South too. I'm sure they will introduce themselves in time! It's true that things seem to be getting organised in the North (thanks to SteveG and his munch squad), and there are several good clubs up North too lol , but don't worry, the South is not a baron land (did I really say that  ?) - only today, Mark has added details to the clubs and parties page about 3 new Southern clubs! Hang around, there's lots going on everywhere 8)
Hi Bluexxx,
Yes, I saw the posting about 3 clubs in the South, but maybe I should have been more specific. We're in Somerset in the South West and to be honest, from here, London and the Home Counties is as much a foreign country as the Midlands. OK, there is a M-Way that goes there and its only a few hours. But just think, as the crow flies, France is nearer.
Sorry if that sounds negative; I'm quite prepared to believe its more a case of rural v city rather than north v south but all the places seem so far away and we get used to making our own entertainment down here.
Red Baron
Ah, well as a Northerner, everything south of Birmingham feel like the South to me! wink Well, there's bound to be people to play with, you just have to keep on looking! Good luck and enjoy the site!
Welcome Red Baron.
Have fun in the Forum!

Hi Red Baron wave
Nice to see you to the Forum.
I hope it wasn't a Frenchman with long arms that grabbed you and pulled you completely uderwater on Saturday !!! lol
I look forward to learning the gory details.
Then you'll appreciate that I grew up thinking that everywhere north of Birmingham was a different planet. But I am older now and have many fond memories of encounters with beings from that other planet. Travel broadens the mind - let's all do more of it.
Red Baron
The problem with the Northerns here is that they all seem to be on the "wrong side of the pennines" smile
Or maybe I should rephrase that and say the other side from me {sigh. whimper} People are only happy when they have a mountain range between them and myself. lol.
I would much rather just have a peek or too. biggrin
Hi and welcome Red Baron,
It was of my opinion till recently that all the fun is happening up North and not down here. You missed a munch in Chichester last week (organised by the gorgeous Mandy). Hopefully we'll be organising another soon in or around Bournemouth. But until then nice seeing you in the forum.
Sab :rose:
Hi and welcome, Red Baron!! wave
We can do with more Southerners on here - there is far too much fun going on up in the North West!! mad Still, keep looking and I am sure you will be fine. There are some folks from the South West who pop in from time to time, so keep your eyes peeled!
as the crow flies, France is nearer.

Ahhhh, France. Nice country. Gorgeous food, fantastic wine. Shame it's full of French people evil ! It was so much better when we used to own most of it!!
*pats his broadsword fondly and remembers the archers of the Hundred Years War and the famous hand gesture they have left to posterity! :thrilled: *
The Middle Ages, huh? When men were men and women were grateful! Look forward to seeing you around RB.
Hi Everyone, and thank you for the nice welcomes.
Red Velvet, Bournemouth is not too far away - by road or triplane - please keep me posted of munches and other developments.

Sorry, Will. That gesture is a lot older than the common legend claims.
Hiya RB, yes, not so much a north south divide, as a hot bed of swinging about the middle of the country, had a few Scots members pointing out the lack of facilities in their fair country.
As for the fine debate between DJ and Will.
A labiodental fricative was no less "difficult" for Middle English speakers to pronounce than the aspirated bilabial stop/voiceless lateral combination of 'pl' that the fricative supposedly changed into, nor are there any other examples of such a shift occurring in English.
Just about sums it up! rolleyes Please kiss and make up!

Having trouble with your labiodental fricatives, Kat? I think there's a cream you can take for that.
I haven't had a good fricative for ages.
