Probably going to get a bit toasty on this one, but the beta of the new Microsoft anti-spyware tool is surprisingly effective.
I know, I was  too. Microsoft actually releasing software that works...
Then I remembered... Microsoft pulled a Victor Kayam. They liked it so much, they bought the company...

i have beta which i downloaded from m/soft and i think its the best it tells you which spyware are critical for your computer, you have to remember not all spywares bad.
A couple of quotes from others regarding the MS software you can use.
Just think, who will know how windows works, what is needed and what isn't? The people who develpoed it would come to mind eh?
It is good but again, without a firewall or others to compare it you can only take it at face value.
MS haven't got a bloody clue how large parts of windows work. Quite a few of their original developers left in the dot com boom and people have been terrified to touch certain bits of the code since...
really is it that dodgily constructed ?
is spyware doctor a bought or downloaded jobbie please

I suppose that is why they are creating new versions of it then eh?
The initial popular belief on the beta version was that it was going to be too strict. The developers all may of left but that doesn't mean they don't know their own system. How could you offer improvements if you don't know what you are working with? Even those they bring in just to work with the spyware side will have a better knowledge of its workings because they have been brought inthan to learn it externally.
I agree no one person will know it all but put them all together everything will make sense.

Spyware doctor:
License: Free to try; $ to buy
Thanks to for that information.
You can always find a serial from other sites but that would be naughty. rolleyes
Well whatever next?
Spyware cleaners from the people that wanted the chip manufacturers to give every chip an ID that windows could identify; so that they could track "usage and licencing issues"
I wouldn't trust a spyware programme from them if it was the only one available.
What's good spyware? Anything certified by Microsoft!
What's bad spyware? Any thing not certified by Microsoft!
What is the next thing up their sleeve?
Anti-virus protection!!
Imagine someone selling you a bucket with holes all over the bottom.
Do you say?
"Oh ! I'll go and see what the bucket company has got to mend the holes"
Or do you say?
" why the f*ck couldn't they mend the holes before they sold me the f***ing bucket. "
We may have to live with the virtual monopoly but we don't have to like it or encourage them by rewarding programmes that are so good that we need to buy third party add ons to make them work right.

I take it you don't like Microsoft then?
Nice rant. I like the bucket terminology. I don't agree with it but who cares. rolleyes
I believe in being well protected LOL .. I run Norton Internet Security, have ad-aware and run MS Anti-spy and between the three of them they pretty much catch it all.
I like Anti-spy because it tells you exactly what it's picked up including all the MSN signatures and you can choose to ignore etc. I like ad-aware because it picks up all the tracing cookies etc and NIS because it does the job.
Haven't found any disadvantages with any yet ....

MS Anti Spyware is actually pretty good. Mainly because they just bought out Giant Software, the company that wrote it. Their anti-virus software should be of a similar grade, since I believe they have acquired an AV company as well. It seems Microsoft's corporate policy of "if you can't beat 'em, buy 'em" is alive and kicking.

I am using Microsoft anti spyware and find it very good.
This months edition of PC answers have done a comparison on 8 spyware programmes and Microsoft come out on top 90%.
Microsoft purchased a company called GIANT software (manufacturers of this product)
I also use AdAware and Spyblaster
Yep... I'm using Giant... whoops.... Microsoft AntiSpyware, but I also use Spybot and AdAware. They all do a good job but each one manages to find things that the others miss. I like AntiSpywares real time protection and alerting though.
I guess I'm just paranoid wink
For Spyware specific I also use a combination of Ad-Aware and Microsoft.
As much as I hate to admit it - the Microsoft product is very good - it certainly picks up more than Ad-Aware, plus it does have some nice little features.
On top of this I also use Norton for anti-virus specifically.
My only comment would be that it is such a shame that you need all this stuff now. I have been in the industry for so long that I do remember the early days of the net when there was an abundance of useful freeware and the world seemed a happier place!
It seems, certainly from the phone calls of help from my friends, that now the main issues are spyware rather than viruses. I once looked a guys pc who had more than 900 spyware programmes on his pc. He hardly ever used it, but he did have 3 teenager kids.
A lot of "free" programmes like Kazzaa are just loaded with Spyware, I wish that the warnings on a lot of these downloads are not more apparent.
I currently use Webroot's Spy Sweeper.
There's a PC World comparative review and a list of dodgy anti-spyware products .
:small-print: :high-smile:
Thanks for the input peeps. I have looked at the blurb and it seems OK.
Have decided to give it a go. Fingers crossed.
Again thanks all.

I can't believe he's gonna do it. lol
Am I going too far???
I've got Norton, McAfee (with aol, see), AdAware and AVG and I still get feckin Trojans and god knows what else. Aol spyware pops up frequently to do a qucik scan but never finds anything so I can only conclude that it is shite. rolleyes

Absolutely spot on - I'm an IT manager for a large government organisation and we have been using MS-Beta version because it seems to find more spyware then any other program on the market, makes sense they have more resources and investment so can afford to make a better program plus their firewalls and DSO are cak and let every bit of shite through so they had to do something!
what ive found with my limited knowledge and begging of free information from those in the know
only run / have installed one protective programme
because the way they are set up ,they can hinder each others performances in virus ,pop-up and spy ware programme control

Yes I'm using this software, its extremely versatile and out-performs many other anti-sppyware programmes however I would still recommend using another anti-spyware such as 'Lavasoft Ad-Aware'. Reason being is that not all spyware can be picked up by this Microsoft product, specifically as it is still in Beta form (last time i checked). Other then that it has an ergonomic interface and is extrememly easy to use.
mr bailiffs uses spybot search and distroy but his work put it on the laptop when he got it.....its alright im not sure whether its seen as a good un???

That could explain why after running my MS Beta version and found nothing I followed it by runnning Ad-Adware and found 37 items !
This is after reading in the sunday paper that you should run at least 3 programs to make sure everything is captured confused
