Had to have my desktop reformatted and then, by mistake, installed an old version of the software - now can't read the iPod contents andmy kindly techie help person is tearing his hair out - whats left of it!!

Sorry I regret to inform you that your ipod is broken (not repairable at all ever ever ever). I would suggest that you send it to me immediately (first class preferable) and I will dispose of it safely for you - no thanks needed its really no trouble at all.

Haven't kept the library - for good reasons which I still don't regret - so it's just a case of doing the restore and then sitting around inpuutting the 305 CDs again???
I will take the chance to put them onto the hard drive and then write them to DVD as well as onto the iPod drive.

Yes, of course - until about three weeks ago my hard drive was a meagre 60GB and I didn't want/need all that stuff clogging it up. My special tecchie bloke installed a huge 160GB additional drive so I am in the process, or was until my desktop went belly up last week (but all is saved and sorted now) of putting all the music onto this dedicated drive.
After doing the restore thing (thanks) we found out that the iPod will import music from mp3 and wav format from the hard drive - it even imported a music file from special tecchie blokes own desktop two miles away but some wave of a magic wand!
So, am happy again.
Am off to bed though...

Thanks Alex - think we sorted it last night, well, sorted in a 'reformatted the 40GB drive' way. :twisted: Now I can do things properly this time!!!
I did think of James last night but the big book I bought about iPod helped, and we just did what the book and Sandman said... sort sharp shock though. However it was effective and now I can start again. Actually we learnt that the iPod will import from the PC hard drive and automatically convert mp3s or Wav files to the proper format without me having to do anything complicated or tecchie - so the process was productive!!
