Just listened to the frankpopp tracks, pretty impressive.
Are they a modern band?

I first heard of them about six months ago but their first album on a major record label cam out on Monday. Not that I can buy it up here in the sticks. sad
We had 'new' northern once before and it was not good for the scene. Listen to any of the following 'created' northern tracks and tell me how many have stood the test of time:-
Footsie - Wigans chosen few
Skiing in the snow - Wigans Ovation (Listen to the Invitations version if u must)
Anything on the Soul Galore label (Almost).
Some of the manufactured dross on Grapevine/Inferno/Casino Classics/Disco Demand/Black Magic. (there are some genuine classics mixed in amongst these labels so be wary!)
So thanx but no thanx. Blinkers on, gimme the real thing.
Mind you - You could always listen to Soft Cell murdering Tainted love, or What. Or Yazz's version of The only way is up. lol
It ain't purist plc but it beats the shit charts stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok - heres a challenge for you all - post ur all time northern top five.
This should be interesting.

But if there's a party involved, maybe you could educate me.
Glad to hear there are other soul brothers and sisters out there, although I prefer mine a little more Detroit than Manchester!! lol
Or a bit of Teddy Prendergast, Lamont Dozier, Curtis Mayfield, The Jones Girls, Average White Band etc etc.
While you are on the subject? Anyody here attend the Caister Soul Weekenders? If so, we may well have met before!!

ok - dont take this personally - lol - its for Harry's benefit.
1 never a northern track as long as i have got a hole in my bum. A cheap cash in attempt by Casino Classics after Butch Bakers The Joker went massive. You will never hear either of these trax played anywhere now thankfully.
2 Good cross over track. Charted yet still got a few plays on the scene both as a vocal and as an instrumental.
3 Soul Artist - Soul Label - Wedding reception song. Even tho it's about divorce. I could never understand that.
4 Massive crossover hit, both sides getting huge amounts of needle time. Now played out.
5 Clone of the Invitations track. yeurk!
6 Played to death instrumental. Everyone and his brother owns a copy. Still popular at oldies events.
7 Motown pop song.
Having read the above I sound like a vinyl snob. I probably am. At the end of the day though, you listen to the music you like. But there is much better soul hiding away from the mainstream if you want to go and look for it.

SOS Scotts on swingers (HOW APT lol ) - Edwin Starr
SOS (All we need is time for love) - Todays People
All ace trax.
WibblyWobbly - Words fail me (Theres a change).
Great list.
More of a 'Modern' ( I hate that description) soul man myself. A big fan of the Philly stuff right through to current soul, as long as its not r&b tripe. Get to a few weekenders as well as smaller events across the UK.
A few faves are Leon Ware- Thats Why I Came To California, Teddy Pendergrast- The More I Get, Maze- Joy And Pain, Brainstorm- Loving Is Really My Game. I could go on all day but I'm amazed no one has mentioned The Carstairs.
Would this be 'It really hurts me girl' that you are refering to? Great track that somehow sneaked its way off Red Coach and got a UK release on Inferno. Then they re-mixed it as a 12" er. DOH!

Thats the one.
Again, not Northern tracks but Keni Burke- Rising To The Top & Keep On Singing sounded particularly good in the car this morning.

I've been the once or twice... personally the music policy wasn't to my taste and the fact that it takes ages on a friday evening to get there... Found this report for you though... seems a fair one.

The only soul nights we make a point of going to are local ones and Stoke all niters... Stoke because that's when all our friends of soul groups tend to get together... a good night for catching up with gossip...
