for pure off the wall humor and book that would make me laugh out loud even if i was of a train.
GOOD OMENS by Terry Prachet
I now have two copies as I thought I had lost mine

One of THE best books of all time... EVER!
rotflmao
Totally hilarious. Pratchett at his best, helped by the equally brilliant Neil Gamain.

My favourite Pratchette book is Piramids. A recent holiday read was 'the Pornographer's Diaries' by Danny King, very funny. Another I think worth a look at is 'Sunset Over Chocolate Mountain' by Susan Elderkin.

I just love A Child Called IT. It's a biography of this man's chilhood. The follow-up are great aswell, The Lost Boy and A Man Named Dave. They are very sad but excellent reads.

i read all 3 great books sad but good
thats the type of book i read in general abuse/childhood ones. Best one i ever readd was Daddy's Girl its very graffic in parts and not for the faint hearted but very well written
not really into romance novels horrors or sci-fi
I was given loads of books for Xmas biggrin
Making Money by Terry Pratchett
How To Hear Your Angels
An Angel Held My Hand
and I *cough* 'acquired' Srimad Bhagavatam by His Divine Grace Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
:D
can I recommend Fanny Hill by John Cleland. Its a penguin popular classic and its a great read if you fancy something erotic, beats belle de jour hands down. biggrin
Ok here's our author list......
Peter Robinson.....Inspector Banks books very good.
Mark Billingham very similar both these and the above are set in the uk and are a series.
James Patterson......hundreds of books all brill.
Jeffery Deaver also all excellent.
Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reich.
Obviously all the above are crime thrillers....
We don't use the library because we find they are not up to date enough......also books are so cheap from tesco/asda etc that its not a problem buyin them.
All the books we read are also normally passed around to whoever wants them......
Happy New Year to all the readers on here.....

Thanks for all the suggestions folks. Think am off shopping tomorrow and will be making a list as there sound like there are some great reads.
Keep 'em coming though... I can always be tempted by books!! redface

If you like thrillers/adventures like those by Michael Chriton (sp?) I would recommend Ice Hunt. I can't remember the author and I'm too idle to go upstairs and look but it's a great read. Always has me up to the small hours. But the Arctic location is VERY well described, so have your thermals on when you read it.
I'm not fond of Patricia Cornwell myself - too much about how she feels and not enough detail on the science side - but that's just me.
Anyway - let us know what you get and if you enjoy it.
I reckon we should start a sticky for book recomendations - it is the Year of Reading after all biggrin:D:D:D:D:D (or was that last year?)
well if you want a good adventure to read,i suggest you get either Andy Mcnab or Chris Ryan.. they are both ex army and have written creditable books.. If you are looking for something out of this world, try Terry Pratchett (disc world is the place he writes about).

Don't read......
On Becoming a Person: A Therapist's View of Psychotherapy by Carl Rogers, its boring the hell out of me and I'm only a few pages into it rolleyes

Get it read woman smackbottom (you know you want to) lol.
I can never put down Dick Francis books.
We need to talk about Kevin - lionel shriver
brilliant book in my opinion for so many reasons.
I got a book a few months back called 'The little Prisoner' .. I couldn't get into it at 1st... but tried again in december.. I couldn't put it down and had finished it within a week. It was very sad and extremely detailed.
Just got 1 called 'When daddy comes home'.. started it and then realised there is a previous one called 'Don't tell mummy'... so off back to asda i will go on fri to get that.

So many that I could mention biggrin
I like anything by Philipa Gregory - particularly her Tudor novels.
CJ Sansom - Dissolution
Elizabeth Chadwick - The Greatest Knight, The Scarlet Lion or Daughters of the Grail
And I had Russell Brand's autobiography for Christmas which I thought was hilarious.
Let us know what you get and if it's worth a go lol

I just finished reading Phillipa's "The Other Boleyn Girl" - which I thought was great and apparantley its being made into a film
Prior to that I read The Kite Runnerby Khaled Hosseini and just loved it. The film has just come out too so I saw that last Sunday and it was very moving.
My Sisters Keeper by Jodi Picoult was also a great read. It tells the story of a girl who was conceived as a genetic match to save her sisters life. The story gives her side of things as a teenager, plus other members of the family, the counsellor etc. I found myself reading one persons version and saying to myself " thats right, I agree with that" - then would read the next person's side of it and go "ummm Yes, I can see your side of this too"
It was very interesting and as far as I know, different to other Jodi Picoult books

This was first one of hers I read and she's an excellent story teller. She's written a couple in the same sort of way, telling the story from different prospectives. Try Salem Falls, about a teacher who is wrongly accused of sexual abuse. Excellent stuff

This thread is turning into a nightmare for me. I'll read anything when I have the time but as this should be my final year at Uni, I can't read for fun. I already have about 15 unread mixed books because I just buy random ones when Tescos have offers on so can you all stop posting suggestions that I want to read when I can't mad:x:x ;)
I am nearly finished Next by Michael Crighton. All about genetics and gene techology and how its becoming a fast growing business.
Girls in the USA sell their eggs to get money, corporations own your genetic bits and pieces. All conspiracy/science fiction stuff, but quite possibly true?

Read all those, quite good.
If you like that sort of book, you might enjoy Tori Hayden, she's an ex social worker who specialised working with victims of child abuse, and all her books are based on true cases she work with. Bit depressing at times but you know what your gonna get when you open the cover.
Other excellent read is Kokodu by Peter Fitzsimons.
I got My Booky Wook, Russel Brand's autobiography for xmas and it was honest and quite , but then he is by his own admission odd lol
Fave books last year were The da vinci code and Angels and demons ( far better than da vinci code in my opinion) by Dan Brown.
I quite enjoy Anne McCaffrey Dragons of pern series for easy reading together with Anne Rice books make for an ebjoyable read. I guess im a bit of a fantasist at heart.
The Dr Zeuss books as a child were tantamount to literal abuse!! I still dont get it?? confused sad

I always find books by James Herbert are good, but you have to like horror stories etc, and have a bit of a warped mind lol,
Also like Autobiographys, Reading : On The Edge by Richard Hammond at the moment, which is very good . biggrin
The Time Travelers Wife-Audrey Nifffeeennneeggeeerrrr.
Stark- Ben Elton
Man and Boy- Tony Parsons. (Read that one in a day as I couldn't put it down)
and if there is room for more ...
'Pig Island' written by Mo Hayder is a good read
as is Mark Billingham's 'Buried'
struggling with Sebastian Faulks' 'Birdsong' at the moment, I can't get past the pre war stuff (3rd try now!)
really enjoying 'An Utterly Impartial History of Britain: (or 2000 Years of Upper Class Idiots in Charge)' by John O'Farrell at the moment. Easy read, funny and educational too ... If only this had been on the curriculum when I was a lad lol

I love "dragondrums" and "the white dragon" by Mccaffrey, also the Rama books by Arthur c Clarke.
Dont know if everyones aware but sadly Terry Pratchett has developed the early stages of Alzheimers disease, what a cruel blow to such an imaginative mind.
