Cicero - i prefer more modern history but am interested in the Eygption, Hitties, Roman Empire etc but prefer the Industrial Rev onwards!

I actually did a degree in Ancient History 
My 20,000 word final essay was on the differences between Spartan and Athenian women.
The short (not 20,000 word) answer:
Spartan women liked sex more than Athenian ones
(It was good fun to write -there were loads of quotes about shagging ... made my tutor blush

I find history fascinating, and wish that at school they had focused on the interesting bits (like political intrigue, weapons technology, strategy) instead of emphasising rote memorisation of dates, clothing styles and boring economic trivia.

Thanks for your replies. Lovecommando's point is a good one. Human nature doesn't really change over time does it? Will still fight and bonk just as we've always done. Channel 4 did a good documentary at the time of the first Gulf war in which they compared and contrasted the words of the protaganists with those of the leaders involved in the war between the Greeks and the Spartans. All seemed horribly familar.
MAZ I'd love to have read your dissertation. Sounds a lot more fun than mine. Do tell of your primary sources!
LITTLE has a good point about history being written by the victors. That is especially so with Ancient History.
JEZZAY I don't know if Cicero wrote about sex but he had a daughter so he must have known about it!
I was just thinking. Alcibiades was implicated in smashing the cocks off the Hermes. Do you think Socrates had hurt him when they were lovers?!
