I'm not paranoid but I think everyone is out to get me!!!!
Seriously, when I was youger I used to love 1984 style books, totalitarian states, mind control, thought police. I just reading it. Fantasy I thought, but no, as I get older the truer it becomes.
Don't sleepwalk into a totalitatian state.....wake up
Unconcerned ...... they are more than welcome to read every email, text and phone log I have! :giggle: as long as it isn't a crime to be blonde, forgetful and daft!

To be honest, I'm far more scared by the fact that my company has employed an HR director whose stated aim is to outsource as much HR activity as possible. As a trainer I am right in there waiting for my redundancy notice. It isn't just one episode either - he is laying off (there is a mealy mouthed PC phrase for it but it is basically SACKING people) at regular intervals for the forseeable years.
I may, or may not, be laid off this year, next year or in any year between now and God knows when. Not just the usual 'no job is for life anymore'. It's a direct and constant threat to each and every department within HR. People are being forced to apply for their own jobs and justify their employment again and again.
Frankly right now, worrying about some spotty faced junior civil servant reading my emails is the least of my problems.
Have you read John Twelve Hawks? 'The Traveller' or his newest one, 'The Dark River'? Some of it is far-fetched, but the idea of there being a virtual panoptican so that the state can watch its citizens all the time is not far off....
Great books!
Hang on - they haven't got enough resource to monitor a tiny fraction of the existing TV cameras. Even if they have word search programs checking all the ISP and phone traffic they would be swamped with % meaningless (to them) drivel. It is unworkable.
I'm more scared of the government selling that info to telesales and research companies.
I'm sure they do this, how else did the records of learner drivers come to be found in America?
I don't give a monkey's.
I don't visit any site, or make any text or email that is illegal.
And if measures like this could prevent future terrorism, fine by me.
However - if I'm being naive, maybe someone would like to enlighten me.
Yet another exmple of the "nanny state" we are now living in and which is constantly being rammed down our throats.
To be perfectly honest though, if it happened what would/could anyone do about it? We, as a nation, are getting shafted from behind by the powers that be in parliament yet we all just carry on accepting things for what they are. Dont get me wrong i'm no leader of the protests nd i dont profess to be, but somebody needs to start tackling the goverment head on for issues like this.
Fuel prices are a prime example of this, there were massive demonstrations when the price reached 75p per litre which crippled the country, they are now at 125p per litre where i live and nobody gives a flying fuck anymore and the goverment are loving it as the way they see it they can carry on shitting on us all from a great height and we'll just keep on accepting it.
It wouldn't surprise me one little bit if this "database" was already in progress as i'm sure i read somewhere before that the goverment or MI6 already have the capabilities to do this and if/when you mail or text someone and it contains a word from a pre-defined "hotlist" i.e bomb or jihad etc then the mail or text is scanned properly and action taken if needed.
The nanny state we live in is going to get far far far worse sad

Its not about having anything to hide though, its the basic principle of the matter is it not? Its none of the goverments business if you recive an email from the missus saying whats for tea, or a text saying the cat has died.
Pure & simple its none of their business. I have nothing to hide either but i dont want some spotty oik reading all of my business and knowing more about my life than i do!!

I don't particularly consider I have anything to hide either... I guess my main concern with this would be the security of the data once it was stored. The potential ramifications of breaches of this data would be huge - and whilst I'm not aware that my internet habits are illegal or immoral (!) I'm not sure I'd like my family or my employers knowing what websites I visited and how long I spent on them, ditto for the texts I sent etc. Now I know I am taking this to an extreme, but it isn't inconceivable that data like this, if stored, could be used to blackmail/embarrass etc should it leak/be stolen.

 I must read this or refer to it soooo often. It just resonates on so very many levels.

Dont mean to alarm you but if you work for anything like a semi decent organisation with a semi decent IT dept where all the computers at your workplace are networked....the chances are your employers already know exactly what websites you visit whilst at work and for exactly how long!!

Ahhhh yes, but I (usually/mostly/pretty much anyway!!) only use the internet in work for work stuff... I took the OP to mean that there would be a log of all internet activity - i.e. that which I peruse in my own time as well - held centrally. That is the kind of info I would not like getting out

The chances of Nola logging on to anything remotely rude/illegal are remote if they have anything like the controls the local authority has on our server.

Of all the suggestions made in the OP i would imagine this one would be the hardest to actually implement. As already suggested by someone this would swamp whichever organisation was collating said info with so much useless info that defining the useless from the useful would be nigh on impossible.

Indeed - researching something for a literature project today was hilarious, soooooo many completely innocent sites blocked totally! Frustrating, but necessary.

I`m a bit confused by the fact that everybody seems to assume that none of this information is already recorded
I thought that ISP`s and telephone companies already recorded everything as a matter of course.
Credit/Debit card transactions are recorded
CCTV watches your every movement in the street and in your car.
If I pay for things in cash I am frequently asked for my name and address.

Only a complete fool would believe that certain information is not being kept by someone somewhere. Our local chinese does it for fucks sake! When you call them their computer recognises your phone number and brings up all previous orders and methods of payment used in the past!!

Ours does that too!
put it another way if you where in prison you wouldnt want anyone reading your ingoing and outgoing mail would you
just as outside prison you wouldnt want anyone reading your ingoing and outgoing mail
is it not illegal to open and read mail not addressed to you
its something to do with interfering with the queens mail
if they where to log your emails and read em then it is no different to oppening a letter addressed to you from your mum dad ,bank manager or such
if they can read emails then what is to stop em readin confidential mails from online banks
and what will safeguard the logged material as they couldnt look after bloody cd disks from the dvla
its not about staying within the law it is about your private life
what about peopel on here
many are married and have familys this site would lose many peopel because they wont feel safe anymore coming in knowing they are being watched
with a possibilty of info coming back to thier familys .....
I did an MSc in forensics a couple of years ago. Typical subjects researched on the net included: bomb-making, illegal drugs manufacture, weaponry and ballistics, identity faking and document analysis.
I suppose I'd better just wait for the knock at the door.
(Needless to say I had to do my research at home as my company had blocked most of the useful sites).

It's gone way past that stage now...
It's another mound of nuclear waste dumped on top of the coffin
Can't understand why some are not bothered by this.
Would you think the same if they were stood over your shoulder with a clipboard watching you or if there was a camera poking in your window ?????????
It still an intrusion to me whether they are physicaly watching or clandestingly (big word it has to be spelt wrong lol)
I think its awful. I don't like the idea of somebody somewhere all the time knowing what I'm doing and recording it, possibly making judgments about me without ever knowing me. The big brother Watching over us all is just another way to corral humans to fall into a pattern of behaviour deemed appropriate by others. OK in many things that can be seen as a positive but not everything.
Makes you wonder about the use of the saying 'Equality Fairness and Diversity' so enjoyed by our civil service's. Diversity??? hmmm makes me think sometimes. One day there will be no diverse because it wont be equal or fair.
The future is going to be ................. Average?
I think they started to collect information on young people a long time ago... conexions cards are one. Some charity organisations cant get certain funding funding unless they give the names/addresses/tel numbers/emails of young people they work with who will benefit by it.
I know most of the major cities have a huge data base of all the young people that many different organisations can access, as I was requested a number of times to give our organisation data base to them and I and our management committee refused. We lost our funding because of that.
I think its scary the information that can be accessed already about you and I damn well dont want any more of personal information to be shared or gained by anyone. Big brother (Gov) is all about control !!!!!!
PS Splendid thats a brilliant quote, Ive used it a few times in the past.... !

So you are perfectly happy that a future government will not make anything you like to do illegal ? That's very trusting. I suggest you read about the 1933 census in Germany which asked householders to list everyones religion. There was little outcry - after all, people had nothing to hide. How do you think the Nazis managed to round up so many Jews so quickly.
It's not what they are planning to do, which scares me. It's what they could do.
Oh, and I hope you have no pictures in your internet browsers cache of anyone who looks under 18 in a provocative pose, coz then you're already illegal, mate.
I am not really worried if the powers that be know that I like Gary Numan, Judge Dredd and shagging.
They can listen in and log all my activities if they want. I am proud that I can be a complete geek and still get laid.
It doesn't scare me that they can log information if they want, I'm just surprised they'd want to. It scared me more that they can obviously log my movements if I drive a car... those cameras aren't just for speeding, they're there so the government know I go to heavy metal clubs, and I am worried they will tell people I do air guitar...
All this silliness is just really to point out that most people need not be worried about the hard fact that, yes, whaat you say and do, and where you go, can indeed be logged. But the authorites are very unlikely to be even slightly interested and it would only really be if they had cause to investigate you that any of this stuff would even be looked at at all. That bit may be scary, as if they were to investigate me for, say, interest in violence, they would discover that I play GTA4 and like to discuss the finer points of which type of zombies enjoy eating brains.
my log files won't take long to read....... rolleyes
